Since you haven't already booked your trip couldn't you just push it back a week and do both?

That's super annoying. I probably wouldn't go...I know that's not a popular decision, but sometimes there are consequences (i.e. people don't attend) when people can't get it together!

I'd be annoyed. I am a super far in advance planner, and my MIL and BIL are last minute people... Every year for Christmas we know they are coming, but never the dates until December when they finally book plane tickets and complain how expensive it was. If they had booked in July when I told them, it would be half the price! Also, they have done this for family vacations to Hawaii, always last minute, and then complaints about price. So I feel ya!

I'm with you. I would be super annoyed. When you are only inviting 10 people, is it really THAT hard to accommodate the one weekend that your son and daughter in law have pre-existing plans?

My MIL booked my SIL's wedding shower the same weekend that my husband and I had plans to go to Vegas. We had already booked the trip and booked flights for my parents to come to our city and keep our daughter. My MIL and SIL flipped the F out that we wouldn't rebook our trip. FOR A SHOWER. Dude, if you wanted us there so badly, you should have asked us if we were available that weekend. When my MIL asked me if we could change our trip and I said 'no' she went behind my back to try to get my husband overrule my answer. I was NOT pleased.

My MIL just sent out a super annoying group text at 4pm. When I'm trying to leave work an DH is home with a sick child and a electrician. So, I hear ya.

@gingerbebe: Yup, wedding planning was hard enough and trying to accommodate everyone's request (regarding location, food, alcohol and 39750928 other issues).

@ElbieKay: I would just assume she forgot and it wasn't intentional. Either go or don't go. Did your MIL talk to your DH and maybe he didn't forgot that vacation was that week? I tell my DH so many times what our vacation plans are but he can never remember.

ETA: Oh, it's for 10 people? Yeah, I guess I would be a bit annoyed. But I would have a bit of sympathy because my wedding was hell to plan. Dealing with caterers and all that. Ugh!

@ElbieKay: I can completely relate to being burned out and needing the vacation. I'm sure that compounds it all.

My ILs are the same way! They don't really like to plan or they flake out pretty quickly for having a sniffle or whatever. Drives me nuts!

@2PeasinaPod: This is like the sixth iteration of her wedding plan. I also am not that into weddings in general, so I am tired of all the back and forth.

I know that I should just accept/expect the flakiness, but it is so foreign to me. My family is not like that -- actually my parents are type A to a fault -- and my friends all understand the concept of planning. So every time she pulls something like this, it blindsides me.

I am very burned out right now, so I don't need the extra complication. That is the real issue.

@ElbieKay: Bummer. I sort of inferred that - it's so incredibly annoying...especially if she suddenly decides she wants it in the middle of September again.

Honestly, for a wedding I wouldn't necessarily try to accommodate others' schedules. Things are hard to book and there are logistics involved and who knows what the factors were. That said, you're free to go on vacation and miss the wedding, although I realize that's easier said than done. Or you can just go on a shorter trip than planned.

Boo. White it's certainly inconvenient booking vendors for weddings can be really complicated. Unless this is her 5th marriage I'd let this one go.

Blah...I'm sorry. Is it possible to extend your vacation and tack it on to wherever your MIL is getting married?

My MIL is engaged. We told her approx 10x that we were planning to go away during the last week of August. She told us she had planned on a wedding in mid/late September.

She just emailed me that she booked her wedding on the weekend we are planning to go away. Unfortunately for me we have not booked our tickets yet. I was planning to do it this weekend.

I am totally burned out and in desperate need of a vacation. I am barely keeping it together right now. I know I am overreacting but holy crap is it that hard to be considerate of our schedule???
