I'm trying to be understanding of the whole - I love babies, cultural differences, trying to decide if she wants kids -thing, but honestly she sounds like someone who doesn't understand boundaries. Maybe I just haven't been around enough people from other cultures, but even waiting outside your room in the morning is a bit strange. What does your husband think?
ETA: even if it is cultural and coming from a place of love, if your LO is upset, just do what you need to do, and let her be all, "silly Americans, with their personal boundaries. "

My first thought was maybe she really loves kids and can't have children of her own or something to that effect.

The pumping part is weird to me but from what I've experienced over in Europe they are much more open about breastfeeding than we are. So she probably sees it as no big deal.

@Leah: creeeepy! Honestly, stuff like that annoys me way more than usual when it comes to holidays because I want LO to have some special time with me and his grandparents during his first set of holidays where there aren't people he barely knows constantly grabbing at him! But there's not really a non-bitchy way to say that.

@luckypenny: @SweetiePie: @plantains: @Jess1483: it's amazing what a night of sleep can do. I'm all ready for her again. I don't think my child should have to be upset so that she is happy, especially since he is in a new place, meeting a bunch of people for the first time. I will accommodate her at diaper changes, and bedtime (even bedtime nursing), but if my LO gets upset and is clearly in need of downtime I'll use some of those responses you suggested. I've got them memorized!

@MrsHansen82: @Purpledaisy: a little strange, but I'm chalking it up to culture, like @lamariniere: noted, and her trying to determine if she wants kids.

@Mrs. Champagne: @wonderstruck: @wonderstruck: I think she and her husband are deciding whether or not they want to have children. They travel a lot and want to live a certain way. So she could be trying to see what having a baby would entail. She wants to feed him, watch me change a diaper, hold him on walks. It is a bit creepy. I know she's being sweet and clearly loves LO. When she's not with us she asks for pictures all the time and is the doting aunt type.

I'm wondering if it is cultural? From what I understand (and someone feel free to correct me) in general Italians are known for LOVING babies and children. I live in Europe and in my experience living in and traveling to a number of countries, the breastfeeding thing is simply no big deal. I'm not saying every woman is fine and comfortable with having an audience while she BFs her baby, just that, in general, it is something done rather openly. As for watching you pump, haha, that is a bit over the top. But I think she's coming from a genuine place of caring and interest.

That said, you should definitely do what you and your son are comfortable with regard to the feeding and him not wanting to be separated from you.

@wonderstruck: agree!

Do you think she's possibly pregnant hence the extreme curiosity about bfing and pumping?

@MrsHansen82: I totally agree - that is super weird! I guess I can see her being curious if she's thinking about TTC soon, but I would be creeped out by someone wanting to watch me pump.

Like @Jess1483: I'm gonna go against the grain here. If my baby is crying and wants me to soothe him, it seems kind of awful to say, "Eh, it's only for a few days, let her try to soothe him." Routines and naps getting screwy I can be a little more flexible with depending on how your LO takes that stuff - mine turns into a screaming upset mess if I keep him out past bedtime, so no matter what the special occasion is, bedtime is still bedtime and we don't stay out past it. But if my child is crying for me and the person holding him doesn't want to give him up, I insist. You don't have to be mean or dramatic about it, just say, "Looks like LO wants mommy right now!" and take him. If she tries to argue or follow just say, "I know you want to spend time with him and you'll get to again later, but I'm the mom and right now he just needs some quiet time with me/bedtime goes much smoother without extra people there/whatever."

But in general, I'm not going to let one of my kids be upset to make an adult happy. My responsibility is to my child and I want him to feel safe. Find your inner mama bear!

Eh, I'm going to go against the grain and say that if you feel it's important, I think you should step in. It was so important to my LO to feel connected and held. I wouldn't have worried as much about naps, but if he was clearly distressed, I'd totally take him and calm him down.

Can you direct the conversation to LO (within her hearing) and say something like "you seem super overwhelmed, buddy. Why don't you and mommy go have some quiet time and read a book. When we're done, we'll find Guiliana and you guys can play again!"

I'm of the thinking that it's only for a few days. I can try and control everything over the holidays or relax and let other people do as much as possible. I mean, 360 days out of the year I can control whatever I want and 5 days isn't the end...

Why not try and let him be entertained and calmed down by others?

Thats a tough situation. You want to be nice but you also want what's best for your child. Unfortunately I'm not as nice as you, haha. This happens with my MIL and happened today. He is clearly overtired and she gets in his face and talks with an insane baby voice and shakes rattles in his face. I finally picked him up and said "MIL, he is tired and getting in his face is upsetting him. He needs to go to sleep." She continued to follow me to every room. It was literally like she was chasing me. I finally had to tell her I am trying to be alone with him in a quiet room to calm him down (he is hysterical at this point). She finally got the hint. Sort of. :-)

Maybe since she likes "helping" you, when it's time for a nap or some downtime you can ask her if she wants to help you get him ready for his nap or sit and talk while you rock him or something like that. Maybe she'll get the hint that now is nap time and not crazy play time.
Or maybe you can sort of "confide" in her that LO has been a little clingier than usual when he's tired. That way when he's freaking out and she has him you can sort of roll your eyes and say "this is what I was telling you about. Here, I'll take him, he'll be more fun when he's well rested".

I'm grasping for straws because I'm not as nice as you :-) and I just tell my MIL (who sounds like your friend) that it's time to stop getting in his face and time to hand him to me. So I'm trying to figure out a nicer way to do those things. Hope this helps even a little. :-)

I'm at my MIL's for Thanksgiving and it's a jolly packed house. We have friends here, a couple; the husband and DH went to college together. DH's friend's wife is from Italy; let's call her Giuliana. She is obsessed with my LO. She wants to hold him all the time, she has asked to come see me feed him (I told her that he would be too distracted to eat if she was in the room), and she has asked to come see me pump (I laughed and said "oh no, you wouldn't want to see that). To be nice, I invited her to come see me bathe him and get him settled for the night. The next night when I left to bathe him she made sure to be there again. Even though I like bedtime to be quiet and soothing, I am willing to have her there for a few nights.

I am however upset when she wants to take LO even when he cries to come to me. It's a really stimulating environment here and his naps have been compromised. I sometimes just want to keep him with me in a quiet corner, but she always comes to get LO to take him where everyone else is. He cries for me and she tries to distract him. I am so timid; I know I should just say something, but I freeze up every time. I just make sure I'm close so LO can see I'm with him.

What should I do?
