Mainly just a guest bed is our necessity. All of our rooms are multi-use. Right now our guest room combines with our toddler's room. We tried moving into there and giving my folks our room, but it didn't work great for us. Next time we are trying to move our toddler into our room and giving them his room.

When MIL comes to visit solo, she just co-rooms with our toddler since it's no big deal to her, but when it is more than one person, the logistics don't work as it's not really fair to the guests to have to be quiet.

We have one and it is absolutely essential! So many of our family members live overseas that we need somewhere for them to come and stay. My mom comes to stay with us a lot and stays for extended visits (six to eight weeks at a time) since it's an expensive international flight to get here, so we definitely need a room for her when she's here! We call it a guest room, but really, it's my mom's room that other people can use when she's not here :-)

When we move, it'll be into a 3 bedroom house. DH is very insistent on this. I'm not even pushing a 4 bedroom house at all. If anything, 3 bedrooms wold mean that my MIL won't try to spend the night or a week again.

I love ours! We have people come stay infrequently, but I often use the room when I need a landing spot to organize stuff etc. I also like having the room so we can keep our extra furniture (just a bed and a dresser). And the closet storage is nice as well! It's just nice to have for when people DO decide to come. Then they don't need to sleep on the couch or air mattress. And it makes me feel grown up having a guest bedroom. :-)

Ours has gotten tons of use - our summers often seem like a ceaseless train of out-of-town friends and family visiting our city and crashing in our guest room - but I still wouldn't call it necessary. When LO arrives we'll convert our office into a nursery and convert the guest room into the office. I definitely wouldn't want to have to go without an office though. Honestly don't think our home would feel functional without a dedicated workspace. But, ditching the guest room in favor of a nursery just seems to make sense. Once we have an infant I won't mind telling guests to get a hotel or stay with other friends in the area. If they really need to stay with us, we can put an air mattress on the floor of the office for a few nights.

I didn't vote in the poll, but here's my two cents.

I don't have one, but I wish that we did. Both sets of parents live out of town, and they come more frequently when they can stay with us. I think we will have a mixed-use room, when we have the space for it. Right now, we are in a 1 bedroom, so we don't even have that.

(So to answer your question: no, I don't have one. I don't think that we would ever use a dedicated room, but a mixed-use room would get a ton of use in our house!)

We definitely need ours. Right now my mom (and sometimes also my dad) come and see us at least once every 2-3 weeks and they stay in the guest room. Once they move to our city it will get used far less but I think it will still be 100% necessary bc my MIL lives a plane ride away and if we didn't have room for her to stay when she visited the trip would be far more expensive than it already is. Plus it is nice to have an extra room/bed to sleep in when one of us is sick and doesn't want to disturb the other person.

Both our parents live far away and come for several days, sometimes weeks at a time. In our previous rental place, we had 3 bedrooms, so when we moved LMW out of our room, guests had to sleep in the living room on an aerobed. Because of that, we have a really nice raised queen aerobed, but giving grandma (or grandma/grandpa) their own space to retreat to and close the door is really important to us. With two kids running around it can be quite overwhelming after a day or so. Plus, it's tough to relax in the living room at the end of the day when grandma wants to go to bed! So a guest room was a must-have for us in our new house. Now the room has a queen sized bed and a desk with a good desk chair in it for Wagon Sr. to use for studying. Our pack and play lives in there, too, for when guests with babies come over. It has been wonderful!!! Yes, most days it sits unused and collects dust, but we have visitors so often that it's been a huge help for us.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My entire family lives out of town (by plane), and half the year my parents are a two-hour drive away. Having that room means they come visit more frequently and we don't have to deal with a hotel. It's also nice for DH and I to use when one of us is sick and doesn't want to infect the other/wake the other if we aren't sleeping well. We also live in SoCal and have had a definite increase in visitors overall since we moved here  (vs Denver, where no one really came to visit!), and this room has gotten so much use. That's just our situation, though-I'd say it totally depends on how often you have visitors that you want to host!

Nope - we're getting rid of ours and turning it into Xander's new room. Guests will have to sleep on the futon in the office loft now. Though we haven't had a guest sleep over in over a year, so it's not an issue for us!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Are you my husband? Honestly, if you weren't a long time poster I would wonder. We are currently looking to buy our first house. I'm in love with this 3 bedroom and he continues to make impassioned speeches for 4 bedrooms, so that when we have two kids then we'd still have a guest room/office. We are YEARS from having 2 kids and I don't think we NEED a dedicated guest room and have plenty of solutions but he REALLY wants 4 bedroom.... arg!

We currently have one that's about to become the nursery. My parents have stayed with us a few times but we'll be moving closer to them next summer so I don't think we'll really need it much after that. We might have the space, but I think it's sort if wasteful/useless to have a whole room dedicated that only gets used a few times per year!

I'm a little stressed about not having a guest room this year while we are renting. Both parents and ILs live far away and come for at least a week at a time, 4+ times a year. We'll have a newborn in one bedroom and a 2.5 year old in the other, and having to uproot either/both of them & affect their routine once a month is not appealing. We also don't have an extra room anywhere else where we could stick an air mattress to be out of the way -- the main floor is all open concept.

On the other hand, friends here are renting a 5 bedroom place for the 3 of them, and that seems excessive.

I'd love to have one extra room (either a basement or bonus room or a bedroom) to stick people when they come. As it is, we'll probably ask some guests to stay at a hotel depending on the timing & length of their visit.

It was really important to me to have a guest room. A lot of my good friends live a few hours away and will occasionally visit. And my parents live 3 hours away and like to visit about once a month. My mom has had both hips and both knees replaced and if we didn't have a real bed for them (like a pull out couch) I'd feel like we'd need to give them our bed. We also use it when one of us is sick and doesn't want to wake the other one up a million times with coughing and nose blowing.

Like @yoursilverlining: the guest bath is really DS's bathroom and it's great to have a place to put all his towels and bath toys and stuff and have it be separate from our bathroom. It's also really nice having that extra bathroom for when we have guests. In our old house we had only one full bath and it was always difficult at night to get in there with 4 adults in the house. And there was always competition for the shower too.

Now that we are a family of 4 and some family either live in apartments or small houses, we often stay in hotels when visiting others and no one has EVEr offered to pay for our accommodations!

Now that all the parents have moved to towns local to us, our guest room doesn't get as much use as it did, although we do have guests every few months and it's so nice to have a dedicated bed/bath. We also use the guest room ourselves; my husband sleeps in their once a week before his heavy workload day to ensure a good night's sleep, if one of us is sick we sleep in their to contain illness, etc.

The gues bath is actually connected to LO's room (which she doesn't use yet), and so it's LO's bathroom and all her toys and bath stuff is in there. That's super handy, to have a dedicated bathroom for her so that our tubs don't become filed with toys and stuff.

We have one now and it gets used about 25% of the time. The grandparents visit a lot. LO2 will get that room next year and we plan to put a Murphy bed or sofa couch in the office (not a bedroom). My MIL, FIL & SIL usually visit altogether so we need two spaces for them. I hate having them in the living room because SIL has a disorder that impacts her sleep and sometimes sleeps until 3pm.
