@mediagirl: p.s. I was nervous about stopping pumping so I actually brought my pump to work the first day after pumping "just in case" but didn't need it. I really appreciated the flexibility it gave back to my schedule!

@mediagirl: @jennylynn: I stopped pumping completely at 13 months and have been able to maintain supply since then without any pumping at all. It is soooo liberating!

As far as bottle amounts, I used to send two 5 1/2 oz bottles (usually eaten at 10 & 2) then nursed at wake up, 5 pm, 7 pm (approx), and once at night. The last month or two she stopped taking as much so I started sending 2 4 1/2 oz bottles, which fit nicely into 1 9 oz straw cup when we switched. Sometimes she drinks more milk than other days and I try not to stress. She also loves yogurt so that helps. I think if you follow her lead you will figure it out...

Do you know how many oz your LO takes at a time? M is a frequent eater/nurser because she doesn't take much at a time. Her bottles of expressed milk are still only 3 oz!

@jennylynn: My doctor said as long as she's getting milk through other products (yogurt, cheese, etc.) it should be okay if she drops a nursing session. LO is 12 months and she doesn't take a bottle or expressed milk. I nurse her in the morning, after picking her up from daycare, and before she goes to sleep.

@MamaCate: One more question too (sorry) So she shouldn't actually be getting *less* milk (whether it be WM or BM), she's just getting it a different way while increasing solid intake. Right???

@MamaCate: you rock! Thank you for that info :) And ditto @mediagirl question. I don't want to suddenly lose my supply, as I'd like to continue to morning and night nurse until around 18 months.

@MamaCate: are you pumping once a day to keep your supply up or do you just nurse am/pm and you're okay during the day?

@jennylynn: My LO is 16 months now so we recently went through this. She is in daycare as I WOH FT. I can only tell you what worked for us so here goes:
We switched her to sippy cups of milk around 11.5 mos cold turkey. She was used to the straw cups because she got water in them with meals. She was not that interested in the bottles anymore, and the 1 y.o. room at daycare discouraged bottles, so we switched early so she was not switching rooms and giving up the bottle at the same time.

I pumped and continued to provide cups of milk, the same amount I would have sent in bottles, until 13 months. After this point, we began 25WH/75BM with the freezer stash, and then went up to 50/50 then 75/25 before finally switching to full cow's milk. She may have been fine cold turkey but I had the stash so it seemed worth using. I think it took about 2 weeks to do the switch which was determined by the amount of milk I had left. My daycare has the kids have one cup of milk that comes out at snack & lunch time so I just sent one cup for the day instead of several bottles.

We are still nursing morning and night although the sessions are getting shorter. Let me know if you have more questions--it can feel so daunting!

@regberadaisy: I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by the whole process. She goes in for her check-up Monday, and I don't want to seem like a complete dork with a ton of questions! I'll let you know what she says though if I get some good info :)

Hey! FWIW I went cold-turkey from bottles of expressed milk (during my work hours) to sippy cups of cow's milk. I continued to nurse at the normal times for us (morning, afternoon and night) but maybe because of the introduction of cow's milk he just sort of slowly lost interest and dropped a session at a time. Then I got pregnant and he REALLY lost interest. (He regained interest when his little sis was born but that's another post LOL.)

On my phone so it may be short.

I would offer the same amount of ounces. It's up to you if you want to mix and slowly wean her from the flavor of BM to WCM. I would start at a 75% BM/25%WCM mix and reduce the BM from there. My LO never minded the taste so we switched cold turkey.

It's also up to you if you want to wean from the bottle at the same time. For us it was too much at once. She still gets a bottle at morning/night to replace the comfort of nursing. Dying the day she uses a sippy though.

Bear with me please....I have a lot of questions.

LO just turned one, and I'd like to slowly start the weaning process. I have started to offer her a straw cup of expressed milk with a snack to get her used to the idea of milk coming from a cup but haven't yet dropped a session (so far she's not a fan of drinking the milk from a cup, but she's never been super interested in the cup to begin with). I had to work today, and so far she has only drank 1/2 of her 10:00 bottle, none of her 1:00, and only half of her 4:30 bottle (she has always only taken 3 oz at a time so she's still a pretty frequent nurser). Is that ok? She's been more distractable at the breast lately, but she still nurses.

Ok. So here's my question dump. When we start weaning, I plan to drop one feeding one at a time.
1. Does she get the same amount of milk in a cup as she would a bottle?
2. Do we drop bottles as we drop nursing sessions?
3. Or should she be taking less milk and more solids now?
4. I have a big freezer stash, so does she get that, or cows milk?
5. Will it make her separation anxiety worse?
6. If she won't take the milk in the cup, do we give it to her in a bottle? (I'm afraid she won't get enough if she doesn't like to drink out of the cup)

I'm sorry for all of the questions. But none of my family or friends have breastfed so I'm kind of going at this blind! Any advice is greatly appreicated! I don't know why I find the concept of weaning so difficult. I guess because this has been my life for the past year, it seems like a big change!!!
