@mrbee: It did at first, but then after the vacation experience, where we had all those photos, I changed my tune.

My husband uses the model that has the wire frame, with the pop in sunglasses. They look like regular sunglasses, most people only notice something is unusual when he wears just the frame.

So, my husband uses wearable technology, like google glass and a smart watch, and I have learned that there's a compromise. For example, when we went on vacation last year, he used his google glass to take photos...we didn't need to bring the camera and we have tons of photos that we wouldn't otherwise have. He might also have it on randomly while he's playing with our son, but he is using it to take a video.

He uses his phone to monitor a ton of stuff, like our home security system, the lights, etc, so it's active stuff that I don't mind.

When we're together my phone is away. I've gone all weekend without seeing texts from my friends, even birth announcements!

We don't have any stated rules, but we're reasonably polite people. Which means no phones out at dinner/meal times, whenever we're having a conversation, or if we're doing something family-ish with the baby (at a park, playing a game with her, etc).

We don't have set rules. In general, we stay off of our phones if we're out to dinner, unless one of us thinks of something we want to show the other or something like that. We'll usually check if we get a text, to be sure it's not important, but we don't answer until later.

But there are also times when we're tired and not up for a ton of talking. Usually in that case we go somewhere with a tv that will be showing a sports game for DH, and I almost always have a book/ereader with me, or at least a blog I can read on my phone, and we just enjoy having a meal together without any pressure to talk. We don't ignore each other the whole time; usually we talk during commercials or time-outs, or just if we think of something. But we're both introverts, so if we've had a more social day, it's nice that we don't HAVE to always talk to enjoy each others' company.

We don't have rules... although if we're going out to eat (together) we talk to each other. At night relaxing on the couch we usually are both on laptops/tablets.

No phones at meals, unless it is work related for him. Otherwise it's fair game, and they are out a fair bit unfortunately.

DH always has his phone with him. If he uses it too much I ask him to put it away in his pocket until we're done with our activity.

My husband would bristle if we had a "rule," but we could really use one. I'd say for the most part we don't use phones when we are out to dinner together. I'd like to limit evening use too, but it's a battle of bad habits.

Depends on what you mean by "hanging out"

Outside of the home, yes. We have no "rule", but we both put phones away (unless in the car, then I might check it)

When eating meals, we put them away.

If we're hanging out on the couch after work, eh. That's our time to relax. And I often do that while on the ipad. But if we're having a conversation I stop what I'm doing to listen.

Someone mentioned that they have a "no phone usage" rule, when hanging out. Te don't have any hard and fast rule, but I try to turn off my phone when we're hanging out. Unless we're away from the kids, in which case I leave it on but put it in my pocket.

Do you have any rules for using a smartphone/tablet while you're hanging out with your SO?
