i had emergency surgery when i was 4 weeks pregnant (not related to pregnancy) and had tons of medication--morphine, vicadin, anesthesia, blood thinner, antibiotics, and percocet, just to name a few. i didn't feel badly because i could not have dealt with the pain otherwise. i am 36 weeks now into a healthy, normal pregnancy. i hope you feel better soon, and i don't think you should feel badly about taking what you have.

I've taken Tylenol every day of my pregnancy, unisom or Benadryl about half the time. I've taken prescription prilosec for the last several months, and cough syrup and antibiotics when I had bronchitis/whooping cough. Baby has done great at every ultrasound and I'm measuring perfectly so I'm not gonna worry about it.

I read in Bringing Up Bebe how it was habit for American moms to trash their own parenting, saying they are a "bad mom" for everything. No need to do this!! You have to get through pregnancy intact and that's okay.

@zippylef: How funny! I live in and have grown up in Oregon. If that rain comment was true our entire state would have autism, as it rains at least 2/3 of the year. You're very right to tell people to not worry about everything someone has said may be bad for your baby.

I think the best thing for your baby is for you to be healthy. Don't beat yourself up for taking medicine when you clearly need it.

I think it depends how bad you feel and weighing up the risk. I remember on my first morning of morning sickness calling my doctor for some medication and feeling like a wuss because it was only day one. By day three I was begging for something stronger because that wasn't working, and when she gave me something stronger I could have kissed her - I ended up on four different medications for nausea and heartburn and still felt awful. I would have taken anything they offered! So don't beat yourself up about it, baby will thrive inside you if you take care of yourself.

I had bronchitis in my second trimester and went through a bottle and half of Robitussion in about a 3 week period. Also had some coedine cough syrup from my doc that I didn't take very much because I didn't like how it made me feel. Also had Tylenol during the bronchitis for pain/headache. All approved by doc. I know how you feel though - since then, I've taken very litte. Benadryl twice due to congestion and need to sleep.

I'm a migraine sufferer and I had to take lots of meds throughout my whole pregnancy, mostly first and second trimesters. I ended up going to the er pretty much every other weekend for some heavier meds. I just didn't have a choice, it's that or I feel like I have to chop my head off. I hated every second of it, I also felt crazy guilty..... But my lo came out healthy as can be. Do what you have to do to keep yourself feeling good as long as your doctor says its ok.

@Foodnerd81: I had to take so many meds during my pregnancy (tylenol, unisom, Zofran, Procardia to stop pre term labor, two rounds of antibiotics for an intense UTI). I was terribly worried about but I'm currently smuggling my perfectly healthy baby girl. I promise that you being in terrible pain is worse for the baby than the Tylenol is!

Just remember that correlation =/= causation. If you believed every single thing they said could harm your child, you'd keep them in a bubble. Hell, there was a study that said that exceptionally rainy weather during pregnancy can cause autism.... yeah....

Moms have so many things to feel guilty about... taking a Tylenol doesn't need to be one of them. I had horrible, horrible migraines in my 2nd trimester and took Tylenol regularly because it was the only thing that got rid of them. I also had pregnancy congestion and took Zyrtec daily for about 5 months. My daughter is normal and healthy.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Being miserable and stressed out is worse for you and your baby than a Tylenol is.

I've been trying to really avoid taking any medication in the first trimester at least. So far I took one Tylenol the day I got my BFP for a migraine and have been able to avoid anything else except some b6 for nausea.
Last night I got the most awful migraine/tension/sinus headache. Bad to the point that I felt like throwing up. I took half a unisom, then the other half, and it still didn't make the nausea better or put me to sleep. I finally took a Tylenol and it did help a lot but I feel guilty for taking so much in one night. Fwiw the midwife said both were fine, but I've read about correlations with Tylenol and asthma for the baby, and Dh already has asthma so I feel like its an extra risk.
I think I'm worrying too much but I'd love to hear what others did. I'm 9 weeks now. Still laying in bed on Christmas morning because I'm afraid of the headache coming back.
Merry Christmas!
