It is indescribable to those who don't live near Detroit...

I grew up and live in a suburb just northeast of Detroit and witnessed my dad get held up at gunpoint (he's experienced this multiple times).

Just this past year, both of my parents were held up at gun point at their store. (Thankfully they were safe and he didn't pull the trigger).

I know SO many friends and acquaintances in the Korean community who have lost family members to gun violence in their place of business (mostly throughout Detroit).

I feel like Detroit has SO MUCH potential to be like many other urban downtowns, like Chicago; but I don't think I'll ever see it my lifetime nor will our children.

@Cole: I have no doubt that MI is still a great place to live and visit. I grew up in DC which at one point was the murder capital of the country on a per capita basis. I had no clue how bad my city was until I saw a HBO documentary. My area was always very safe.

It's scary and incomprehensible. I live a stone's throw from Detroit and it is hard to wrap my mind around the violence. My town is extremely safe, I spend a lot of time in downtown Detroit and have never once felt unsafe even walking along with two little ones. We also don't have any gang issues so it makes it especially hard to understand.

At the same time, it looks like a war zone in some areas of Detroit and that is before you ever see a person. Living in a place like that you must think that since no one cares that you live that way that human life must not be worth much?

There are so many amazing and awesome things about Detroit and that the people are doing to show what a spectacular and vibrant place it is. But the numbers don't lie, in most of the city life is really, really rough. For an interesting look at the city take a look at this blog: http://www.detroitblog.org/

I swear Michigan is a spectacular place, I am happy to show anyone around so you can see that we are more than the sum of our murders.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/23/justice/chicago-shooting/index.html?c=us&page=

I was reading about the recent Chicago shooting that took place at a playground/ park and the article pivoted to Michigan crime rates. MI is under assault. The death rates by gun violence are staggering.

What are people fighting over? These are not political staments like the mall shooting in Nairobi. There is absolutely no respect pr regard for human life. Mental illness or not people are killing others ways too casually.

ETA: I am not anti- gun ownership. I am anti-gun violence. What are things we can do to reduce, eliminate gun violence especially for "innocent" victims. It's one thing to kill someone you intended to kill because they "wronged you", but bystanders and people with no direct connection to the shooters are killed all the time too.
