@MrsSCB: This is true for Georgia as well. I know Target and other businesses have similar signs up - I would hope the same for schools.

It would be one thing if it was holstered - securely. But just tucked into his waistband?! No. I'd be raising hell with the director. What if a kid grabs it? What if it falls out of his waistband? Ugh, I can't...

I live in a very gun friendly state, AZ, and even here you can't bring guns onto school campuses. I would flip out if I saw that at my dd's school.

It would bother me and I think it's inappropriate. I've lived in states with gun friendly laws, have plenty of military family members who have a healthy respect for hunting and guns, our roommates have owned guns (when we had roommates prior to kids).
I do not want to see someone with a gun walking into a school. I don't care if it's a parent, I don't know the person or their intention and frankly the school probably doesn't have all the parents memorized either. I would be absolutely calling the school, i probably would have talked to someone that day before I left.

@catomd00: I don't know about GA, but in Texas private businesses can put up specific signage that disallows open and concealed carry in their place of business. So there are things that could be done if GA has similar laws. Although whether the school would want to is a different question of course.

DS just started preschool this year, so I am trying to imagine how I would feel if I saw this, but I don't think it would bother me. I'm personally scared of shooting guns, but another parent with a license to carry would not bother me. I guess I just don't really see what could happen.

I recently moved to the south from up north. The gun laws are the one thing I'm struggling most with right now. I know a lot of parents that don't keep their guns locked up, just "hidden." Also, one mom that I know felt the need to bring her gun to the park- had it tucked in the back of her pants and her shirt rode up and I saw it. Someone else brought their gun to a 1st birthday party but it was in a holster. My daughter is only 2 now but there are going to be a lot of conversations with parents in the future.

@wheres_c: I would feel differently if they were law enforcement officers in uniform- or even if I knew it was an officer in plain clothes. Obviously we don't know if this guy was an officer in plain clothes so talking to the school should help!

omg, i'm a northerner but that would freak.me.out. it sounds like you are taking appropriate steps, but if the director's answer is that open carry has to be allowed at school, i probably would hire a nanny until real kindergarten started.
i don't belong in the south though... if for some reason we had to move there, i would definitely ask any of LO"s friends' parents about guns in the house

Two of my LO's friends dads pick them up and have holstered guns - but they are law enforcement officers. They sometimes come in uniform, sometimes plain clothed.
I'm in Texas where open carry is legal. I would be upset if I saw a gun being carried into preschool by a non-law enforcement officer.

I live in GA and have only seen a few open carry fire arms in the 8 years I have lived here. Even south of the city where my in-laws live. I would think schools would be gun free zones and would have a HUGE issue if I saw this at DS's daycare. I think it is totally reasonable to press the issue with the director.

I'm from the north and that would freak me out too. I've never seen anyone besides a police officer carrying a gun. (Not to say someone hasn't had one concealed I guess but I never saw). I don't see why a gun has to be carried into a preschool.

But glad there are other bees more familiar with what is normal or not down there

Ugh I hate this about the South. I emailed the director of our preschool when Texas passed open carry laws last year, and they put up giant signs banning all guns. I would be uncomfortable with it but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker. It's just one of the things I try not to think about too much... :-(

That would scare the crap out of me too. Holstered or not, if my daughter's preschool began allowing guns on the premises, I would have a big problem with it. Guns are our deal breaker though, I know not everyone fees that way. Hopefully, it wasn't a usual thing and is something that can be resolved easily. Good luck 🍀

@CakeLady: That's the way my husband carries his little gun on him. But he does have a holster, its just a small slim one that maybe wouldn't be noticed by someone who doesn't understand guns. He always wears his shirt untucked though, so no one should see the gun. But I understand your apprehension since lots of people are afraid of guns. Hopefully you can figure out what to do about the schooling situation! :goodluck:

@CakeLady: I'm just asking to verify, but are you sure it was just in his waist band? They make holders that are just ultra thin nylon fabric. They are meant to not be seen, like this.
http://www.cabelas.com/product/hunting/hunting-accessories/holsters-belts|/pc/104791680/c/104734980/sc/104388480/blackhawk-reg-bedside-holster-150-ambidextrous/1340551.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FHolsters-Belts%2F104388480.uts

I'm just asking because that kind of holster is common where I'm at, if it was totally unsecured that would scare the crap out of me, but from experience the type of people that pay the state and take the class, aren't just going to run around no with a gun hanging out of thier pants! I'm wondering do you have to have a license to carry one in Georgia? Maybe he didn't!

Yikes, that would make me nervous! I live in Texas, where open carry is fairly newly legal, but I have yet to see someone actually doing it. I'm in the city, though, I feel like it may be less of a thing here. Most businesses I frequent have opted to put up the signage disallowing guns in their businesses.
