Is the 4K just for the bathroom renovation? If so it's totally do-able especially since you will be doing the gutting and renovating yourself. Check Lowes/HD often for clearance toilet & sinks. A lot of times people special order things then end up not wanting it and they will sell at a fraction to get rid of it.

Will you be tiling the walls again? What about the floor? Do not buy any of those at HD/Lowes. They are notoriously overpriced. Their initial quote may be great but it's at the end when they add all these extra charges that really racks up the bill.
Go to a flooring store and look for their clearance section. Often there are really nice stuff but it may be just a box or two so they sell at cost to get rid of it.
I've been getting really good deals fom Wayfair. I get 2% via Ebates and there's a 10% coupon floating around. They have a daily fair section that just had bathroom fixtures the other day. I actually picked up a kitchen sink through the daily fair for $165 originally $400+

We'll be gutting our main bath (ours is seafoam
Blue w seashell sinks tyvm!) in about 2 years and I can't imagine spending 4k!

Wall me if you have questions bc we're basically in the middle of gutting our whole house and renovating. At our old house my husband gutted the master bath and redid the whole thing himself. He's in flooring so knows a lot about waterproofing, ceramic tiles etc.

@ms.janedoe: hahaha, i wish we could put it off. In the end, this is the ideal time to do it since no one is currently living in the house. The house has a pink kitchen too and I cam only look at so much pink. Lol.

@Mrs. Jacks: There is a lot of that around here. It is defiitely an option. We want to preserve the feel of a 1940s home... Just not in pink.

Any chance of just...totally putting it off and leaving it? Haahhah, procastination at its finest right here... Waaaay back in the day, DH and I were looking at a place that had a pink bathroom (identical to what you have) and I did quite a bit of research as to how to make it work. We didn't end up going with the house, and although it wouldn't have been quiiiiite ideal (by any means) for a super long-term fix, we probably woulda gone with something like this picture. I forgot the website, but she had a huge section on her pink bathroom! Good luck, lady!

@zippylef: Can you do architectural salvage? I've found people giving away claw foot tubs and pedestal sinks just to get them out of their older homes when they do updates. Can you surf Craigslist and other local sources online and have your family check them out?

@mrs. 64: That is EXACTLY what ours looks like!! The floor and everything! Except we have pastel butterfly wallpaper and the trim tiles are burgundy. lol

@evansjamie: The tub, if I remember, is white. As long as I am correct about that, we will re-use the tub.

@evansjamie: @Mrs D: @spaniellove: I'm not really into the reglazing. We have chosen to spend as little as possible but money is not really that huge of an issue. We have what we would need if it would cost more.

@Modern Daisy: That's a really good idea. I'll do that. I am actually pretty well-versed in DIY and so are my parents. I helped them gut and reno pretty much all of their house.

I third the idea of looking into reglazing the tile for the time being! A while back we lived in a very very old apartment that must have reglazed the tile not too long ago. At some point I assume they redid the floor in a beautiful black and white tile pattern and then got a super cheap vanity, and the bathroom looked stunningly vintage.

Is there a store like HD near you? You can always take pictures and go to the bathroom section and speak to an employee. Of course a contractor is going to tell you it can't be a DIY job. There are also websites where you can order supplies like the tile shop. I would at least get a professional opinion and advice and study tons of online/youtube tutorials before proceeding. There are so many tricks and techniques you can learn that will save you time and money and make it look more professional.

@evansjamie: I second this...my friend had nasty colored tile re-glazed white because it was an awesome cast iron tube and the tiles had few cracks - you may want to look into this!

A sink and toilet is relative cheap, paint is $30/gallon for the good stuff and some accessories you could come in well under $4K! :)

@zippylef: is the tub/tile salvageable and in good working order? If so, you could possibly look into having it reglazed while you save for a gut job down the line.

@zippylef: I wish I had some ideas for you, but we're dealing with the same thing. I removed the 2 layers of pink wall paper (pink glitter on top, pink ribbons underneath) and painted, but it only does so much with all of the pink tile. We also need some plumbing work in there but the plumber says the bathroom needs to be gutted to allow access. We also have the tile in the concrete stuff and were told it was not a self-demo operation. I'm anxious to hear if anyone has any suggestions for you!

@zippylef: I'd check Craigslist. I'm in the KC area so I can't be sad about the ikea ;) if there's a menards in STL maybe ask your parents to watch the sales and pick things up a bit at a time, they usually have one or 2 things on a really good sale every couple of weeks. Good luck! :)

@Honeybee: There is a Re-Store in St. Louis. I will definitely be checking them out and cruising craigslist. The toilet is salvageable but we want to replace the huge vanity with a pedestal sink and we're going to need all new fixtures (faucets, lighting, mirror, etc) and probably a tub.

I would suggest looking for replacement items in the newspaper, on Craigslist, or at donation home stores. Habitat for Humanity has a donation center called the Restore (I think) most cities have them. You could find sinks, toilets, tubs, even lighting and cabinetry for donations only, which is much better than paying retail prices!

My FIL died almost 2 years ago, right before we moved to the UK. We inherited his home. It's a very out-dated 1940s bungalow. WHile DH is deployed this summer, I'm flying home and I'm going to tackle some home renovation projects on it in preparation for us moving home next year.

The main project is the bathroom. I'm not sure if it's the original 1940s bathroom or a 1970s remodel made to look like 1940s, but... it's heinous. Pepto pink tile with burgundy trim, gold mirror and light fixture and lovely, pearlescent butterfly wallpaper with fake shutters on the windows. Really stylish.

Anyway, the tile was either laid on top of concrete or laid directly into concrete, so in order to redo the lovely pink walls and floor we are probably going to have to totally gut the room. Not to mention that the house was badly maintained and we wouldn't be surprised to find mold in the shower walls.

We're hoping to only spend about $4000. Myself and my parents are going to do the work, besides any plumbing or electrical.

I'm trying to figure out where the money is best-spent. We need, at least, a new sink but replacing everything is not outside the realm of possibility. Anyone done a huge project like this with a small budget? Advice?
