@MoonMoon: I read that earlier today. I've read plenty of interviews with Gwyneth Paltrow. When GOOP first started I read because I liked her. But then I stopped once I realized that I was definitely not her target audience. She is completely unrelatable and often sounds pretentious to me.

I have been reading about conscious uncoupling in some articles from the therapist who coined it and some others who work with couples on this and it sounds cool, like a great way to end or transition a relationship--from the way the therapists have been talking about it, I dug it, but from what I read on GOOP's page it just seemed like more posturing about how she is so much more evolved.

@MoonMoon: I was JUST reading about those comments -- yikes! Yeah 14 hour days suck, but plenty of people work them without the kind of help she has at her disposal and without the long vacations she get between movies. Girl, please.

I feel bad for her kids & I hope her words about it being amicable & positive are true.

I found the blog post accompanying her announcement very troubling. The way it tried to justify divorce as "enlightened" really bothered me. Overall it came off like she was trying to spin the split as something you should aspire to along with everything else she does... As if you are not "conscious" if you believe marriage is for life & don't want to "uncouple."

@mrbee: I agree with you, but I think it's extend to more than just female owned business. I see it a lot with female bloggers and basically anyone "famous". Anyone remotely successful is immediately torn down, and I agree it happens more with women-on-women.

Anyway, in this case: I don't care about GOOP. I've never read the website, not even once. Don't care. I just like her movies, generally speaking.

@Cherrybee: I disliked the name GOOP too... until I read that it's some sort of play on her initials. I wasn't a fan of other body part product names (Wii??) at first either, but I think that they tend to stick with you and be memorable.

Surprised she was able to buy it though... it must've cost a fortune! Four-letter domain names are very rare and expensive at this point...

@MrsSCB: A lot of (most?) lifestyle brands are "aspirational" though... where readers can vicariously experience a lifestyle that is beyond their reach. So I always took her site in that vein. A lot of the most successful parenting websites are also aspirational (perfectly dressed kids with a perfect family and perfect photos), and I can't really relate to those sites either.

I didn't see any statements in that link where she positioned GOOP at the mass market though? That's not really her vibe... she's always done pretty well in those upper class movie roles where she plays the aloof unattainable girl. I didn't buy her as Pepper in Iron Man as the common sense assistant to the billionaire boss! It just didn't feel authentic to me...

@mrbee: Thanks, I do agree with you about people being harder on female entrepreneurs generally and it drives me crazy. You brought up Jessica Simpson -- a lot of people do seem to have a problem with her, but I own a couple of things from her brand. She has a lot of cute stuff and it's affordable, but I know of people who wouldn't buy an item because it has her name on the tag, even if they think it's cute. That's just ridiculous.

As for Goop, I've always gotten the sense that she's trying to market it as a general lifestyle brand, not a luxury brand. So it's stuff like this: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/goop-shows-price-living-gwyneth-paltrow/story?id=12616586 that just kind of rubs me the wrong way. She never really seems to acknowledge that her "tips" and "essentials" are really only attainable by the very small portion of the population that has the same kind of disposable income that she does.

@MrsSCB: sorry, only the first paragraph of my response was in response to your post. I should've been more clear about that, I'm sorry.

In general, I do think people are way harder on female-run businesses. I'm in the tech/media sector and I see it a lot. Women have to be successful *and* likable. I don't think people in general hold men to that standard. Good thing, because a lot of the guy entrepreneurs I know aren't that likable.

As for GOOP, I subscribed for a year but just couldn't relate as I too don't have that kind of money to spend. Did she position the site as aimed at the general public? I always figured it was aimed at women with a lot of class and/or money.

@mrbee: I'm very supportive of female-owned businesses in general, so while I can only speak for myself personally, TBH I don't really appreciate the insinuation that this is at all related to my (or any of these other ladies') feelings towards women-owned businesses in general. Just because I'm a woman and just because I love seeing strong women out there doing their thing in the business world doesn't mean I have to love every female-headed company just because it's owned by a woman. Me not being a fan of GOOP has nothing to do with Gwyneth being female and is all about GOOP itself. I would feel the same about any man who tried to tell the general public, "Omg, you guys, you HAVE to buy this stuff, it's essential!" and then it was all $200 tshirts or $75,000 cars.

@MrsSCB: I can't relate to her clothes either. But there's a lot of different markets out there, and she seems to have found one. Plus I think it's great that she started a business and that it seems to have found an audience.

What I don't really understand is how tough people are on women-owned businesses. A guy I know sells luxury car parts online through Google and makes great money. Nobody says, "I can't relate to buying expensive car parts.". In general, nobody cares about any of my guy friends' businesses - even the customer-facing ones in fashion or retail.

I just see so many female entrepreneurs savaged online for selling products that someone doesn't like. I don't like Jessica Simspon all that much, but am continually amazed at how people keep bagging on her while she has built a billion dollar business.

I couldn't see the GOOP link though (it didn't load), so maybe she killed some babies and posted pictures in which case, I take back all of the above.

@yoursilverlining: exactly. I'm absolutely not taking any pleasure in the split and I feel bad for them and their kids. But let's just call it what it is: a divorce. Plenty of people do it and manage to be amicable and coparent successfully. It just seems so gwyneth to try to brand it into the unique unicorn of divorces.
