I have no issue putting my LO in a bikini, a cute age appropiate bikini with her cute belly hanging out, but a bra top, I don't think I can do it!

Edit: as you can see from my profile pic I have no problem with topless babies as long as it doesn't seem like I'm trying to sexualize her, that to me gets creepy. :)

No DDs but I wouldn't blink if I saw this on another LO. It's not my style so I probably wouldn't purchase personally.

@mrbee: agreed.

I wore a bikini from the time I was an infant--granted, my first one had a ducky face on each triangle--but I have always had a long torso, so it was hard to find anything else that fit well.

I don't mind two pieces on little girls, but I do prefer them to look more childlike in color and pattern.

I just wanna add that you all got me wanting to buy a 2 piece for DD! It will be a ton easier for diaper changes! But I'll probably impose the rule as @Maysprout's parents. No 2 piece after a certain age.

@Maysprout: my parents were the same way. I have photos of me in cute little flowery bikinis (that never stayed on and always fell down to my belly button) and I have no memory of actually wearing bikinis because by that time my mom had started making me wear one pieces! LOL.

@honeybear: While I don't really think it's a sexual thing (heck, I swam naked at the lake/friend's pools most of the time so I'm not one to judge coverage) I wouldn't want my little girl to be worrying about adjusting a bikini. I want her to be free to play and participate in whatever.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I was always confused by that too, some of friends parents had that rule. My parents did the opposite though. I wore a two piece through elementary school then all of a sudden it wasn't allowed (even though my little sisters were still allowed). Never wore a two piece again till I left for college.

I'd heard a few people IRL say they though two pieces on babies were weird so I was talking about it with my mom and she thought that was one of the silliest things, and this is coming from a woman who said no two pieces from age 11-18.

@iheartleopardprint: I'm in Australia too but most kids I see are wearing a rashie. DD has two piece suits but her top is always a rashie to protect her from the sun.

@mrbee: Yeah, it's the hip thrust out that throws me, but I may just be hypersensitive to this issue given my field of study (sociology) and profession (child protection social work). I'm not normally conservative but there's just so much out there causing our kids, particularly little girls, to grow up faster than they should, that my views on this subject probably do err toward the conservative end of the spectrum. Ah well. :-/

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I think the difference between a munchkin running around nude vs covered in a 2 piece is that being nude, especially at that age is, natural, whereas when you cover you cover it to give off a specific "look" or tone. Breastfeeding is perfectly natural yet because of how breasts have been covered/uncovered, shown, and portrayed many do not view it as such.... the sexualization of them in other areas of our lives have overflown to the very basics of caring for ones child.

I mean I don't think "Oh geeze that's so sexualizing" when I see a bikini on a baby or child BUT I also think that it's become very common & accepted because of the overflow of accepted sexualization in other areas of our lives. "It's not as bad as some of the other things we've seen & accepted so what's the big deal?!" This is also the reason why I, myself don't wear bikinis... I'd just rather not attribute to the over rampant lust & sexualization of our culture as a whole.

I do agree that in many cases it's backwards, more specifically letting you when you're older vs. when you're younger. It's like pick a side of the fence, you're either okay with it or not! lol

I don't look down my nose at anyone that likes them, or prefers them, but I don't think they're cute & rather they just didn't make them at all... then I wouldn't have to worry about explaining to P why she can't have something that her friends can have. It'd make my job alot easier in this arena! lol

@Rainbow Sprinkles: You're so right about it being backwards to be concerned about kids in bikinis instead of teenagers. We should be waaaay more concerned about teens *wanting* to strut their stuff in that way than innocent little kids.

I got the GOOP email and didn't even think to be appalled. I wouldn't buy this for my kid because I'm not about spending $$$ on any kids clothing, but the design doesn't bother me. In fact, I'd be all for my kid wearing two-piece swimsuits (and cute tank tops with little triangles or whatever) because (judging from my genes) they won't be able to pull off that stuff once they hit puberty!

I'm in Australia, so in general our views are not as conservative as the US. I also live 10 mins away from the beach, in a very beachy area. I see no problem with bikinis.

If DD chooses one for herself when she is a bit older I will most likely have no issue, within reason. I do not see bikinis as 'sexual attire' in the slightest, even when I wear a bikini it's not so I look or feel sexual- its usually because they're the most comfortable swimmers to me.

Until I was on this forum and read the many topics on it, I didn't realise there was an issue with sexualising kids in regards to wearing bikinis. I actually mentioned this to DH and my mum and they laughed.

Definitely a cultural thing, I think.

@looch: To me,there is a huge difference between a child running around in just bottoms and a child wearing a string bikini that I would have worn on spring break. We often go swimming with DD in just her swim nappy (our pool has a sun shade) and there is nothing wrong with that. It's more the issue of trying to make little girls look sexy that bothers me.

I don't know how to take a screen shot, but I copied the picture that really bothers me - it's when you click on the link to the bikini and you see the back of the little girl standing on the beach in the bikini. It just looks inappropriate to me.

http://www.goop.com/shop/melissa-odabash-exclusive-kids-new-york-bikini-set.html

I guess I err more towards the conservative side with LO - I do not dress her in outfits that are similar in any way to what college girls would be wearing, I just don't like it, so it would go to follow that a mini college girl bikini would also follow suit. Again though, I have no problem with appropriate two piece suits or kids running around on the beach mostly nude - it's not the nudity that's a problem, it's the sexualisation.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with the suit or the photo. Is it my style or taste? Not really, though I do like the black. I still don't look at it and think inappropriate. I think two pieces make more sense for little kids, since they are constantly growing. As a tomboy, I have always preferred to wear one pieces myself so I am more inclined to buy the same for LO.

I don't get the big deal that people make about babies in two pieces. They have no boobs. No butt. They're not sexual in any way.

I wasn't allowed to wear a two piece until my sixteenth birthday, and I remember thinking to myself "this seems backwards. Now that I have boobs I am finally allowed to wear a two piece?"

In my opinion two pieces are even more harmless when the girl hasn't hit puberty yet. Once she is older, she has more to show.

I see little kids running around the beach naked or with no shirt on and it doesn't even make me flinch....I barely notice. They're just KIDS.

That being said, LO will be in a one piece cuz I like the sun off her belly.

This is a tough one. I'm a pretty modest person, and I would not ever wear a string bikini even in private. I hope DD will take after me in this regard. However, I don't want her to think she should be ashamed of her body, or ashamed to be proud of her body. She should be free to wear whatever she likes without people slut-shaming a little girl. But would I ever buy one of these for her? I can guess without even going to GOOP that these would be way out of our price range, for a few scraps of fabric. I don't know, man, this is a tough one.

I really can't stand bikinis on little girls, and I only buy one pieces for my daughter. But, if she really wanted one of these in a few years, I wouldn't fight it. I don't like them, but I don't care enough to make it a huge issue.

I really don't see the big deal with bikinis for babies...If you don't like it, don't buy it..That's how I see it. As far as diaper changes go, I really do think a two piece is WAY easier to deal with than a one piece. I personally probably would not buy a baby string bikini, but I wouldn't care at all if the person next to be had a baby in a string bikini!!

Nope, I prefer modesty for little girls. I don't like making them look too grown up too fast.

Also, my DH wouldn't let any daughter of his out of the house in a string bikini.

@allison: Agree. I don't understand this conversation.

I wouldn't buy a string bikini for a young kid, it's not practical but no a bikini itself is not sexual. There's plenty adults who probably make themselves less sexy by wearing them. And there's nothing about a kid to show off so it just kinda blows my mind that people see it that way.
