I think 16 mos is a good time. They are wanting to explore, move their bodies and play with others. You can get groupings, bring a friend free month, or special no enrollment months which can make it really affordable. We have done art classes and play and learn, I highly recommend them. The parents there are a great bunch.

We take our LO to Gymboree, we started when he was 2 months old, he's now almost 4 months. We like it because he's exposed to older babies and it helps him practice his milestones.

My LO is in Gymboree. She will be 9 months in a few days. She's been going since she was 5 months. She really likes it. It's been good for her to meet other babies her own age. She loves the parachute and bubbles and now that she's very mobile, she likes playing on the different set ups they have.

We just started gymboree at 21 months and are loving it. It's great for a kid who's used to being at home... I feel like he's learning new things and also learning to follow instructions.

@regberadaisy: Yep, i believe i can do one free class. Just wondering if i should wait until she's older, like over 1 years old to try it out or if it's worth trying now at 5 months.

@Mrs. Yoyo: good to know! i'll probably stick to some of the < 1 year -friendly classes for now.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I wish we had a library near by; I think LO would love that! I'm pretty sure, based on your blog posts, that our kiddos are exactly the same age, and my LO really started liking the gym class this past month so it might be worth a try for Baby Y. The best part is that he gets SO tired and I'm guaranteed a good nap. ;)

@Baby Boy Mom: Agree about the walking. We did a trial class at the Little Gym before LO could walk, and it seemed like a bit of a waste. Especially because it is $$$! We may reevaluate in the future, but right now he goes to a Kindermusik class and library storytime, and those are perfect.

We tried out the Gymboree near us and didn't really like it. LO just wasn't that into climbing on the structures- it wasn't very challenging for him, but we couldn't move up to the next group because he was too young. We found a local gymnastics studio that has classes for kids his age though, and he loves that! They set up little obstacle courses for them and because it's not a standardized thing, they do a great job with working on different tasks depending on how the kids in the group respond. We really love it! Every place we've gone to though, generally has one free class, so I would just try it out and see what your LO likes. Btw, in my opinion they get a lot more out of gym based classes once they can walk. Before that I would stick to music or yoga.

Every Gymboree location is different so definitely try out their free classes to get a feel of the environment. I didn't like the one near us so enrolled my son in The Little Gym instead. The Little Gym near us is bright, open, and clean. It's a little bit more than Gymboree but worth every penny for me. I started my oldest in gym classes around 2 b/c when I took him at 18-months he was just glued to me so I waited. If you want to start early like 18-months or earlier, I actually recommend music classes. It's more engaging and fun for them at that age. Gymboree has music classes as well but, again, I wasn't impressed with the location and teaching style when we went for a free trial class. I went with Kindermusik instead for music.

@Mrsbells: I think it's $60 a month. We go to some free music classes at the library, and another music class that I get to go to for free because it's at my MIL's gym but it's $30 for 5 classes, so I feel like we are doing a lot. I do like the idea of Gymboree though because my LO is so active, but she can crawl and jump around at home.

there aren't any in our area :( sad...

there are some community education classes like mommy and me and those are much cheaper, like $2-$5 a session, and many are free for kids under 1.
