I’ve been coloring my hair for years and years – I do it about every 5 weeks at home.

Brands I’ve used and liked over the years:

Schwarzkopf (this is what I use now and I find their auburns and reds to be the BEST)
John Freida foam
Revlon
Garnier Olia
Professional stuff from Sally’s (can’t remember brand!)

http://www.schwarzkopf.com/skus/en/home/hair_color.html

Tips:

Have a set of dedicated hair towels – that way you don’t worry about staining your normal towels

Wipe down all surfaces when you’re done, even if you don’t see any color spilled (color hides especially well on granite countertops)

Use a cheapie little comb to really get into your hair to get every strand covered in color (rather than just grabbing sections of hair with your hands and coloring section by section). Combs are great for ensuring that color is evenly distributed on your scalp, around hairline, etc. I buy a bag of throw-away cheap combs at Sally's or even like the Dollar Store and just throw it away after I color

@MamaG: I always do the "ash" shades, otherwise I get too much orange.

What was your intention? To not have to highlight it any longer?

As for tips, I've read the best way to do it is to get a bowl and a brush and apply the color that way, rather than from a bottle.

@looch: Yes, and there are only about a million shades of brown to pick from. I wanted to do a more "gold" brown, but thought for my first time it was safest to pick the color that actually matched my roots.

@MamaG: I think you'll get used to it, I but I do think it takes a few times to get the color right...are you dying it brown?

So am I the only crazy one here that tried to be a DIY professional? I used permanent and got my supplies at Sally's. I've pretty much had my hair highlighted forever, so while I think I got really close to my natural color, it looks soooo dark because I'm lacking any sort of highlight now.

@looch: That probably would have been the safer way to go, but I went all in with the permanent dye.

I only do it periodically to cover greys (so using same color as my hair) and like the John Frieda foam best for ease of use and coverage.

I only use semipermanent dye so I don't get that line of demarcation in the growth.

I have for years. I use Garnier Nutrisse. Advice - I always put an old towel down on the ground to stand on because I tend to make a mess, and I wipe down all the counters afterwards even if I can't see any drips.

@MamaG: I use Madison Reed! I love It! Plus, it's good for your hair and relatively natural.
