@serenity207: I would definitely ask for the full refund and maybe even go so far as ask for the tip back. I've never had my hair done by the owner of the salon though, so I don't know if you tip them or not. The whole situation seems super shady.

Sorry this happened to you! :bummed:

I've had a perm go wrong before, but in my case it was that it didn't really take so my hair basically looked straight after I washed it the first time. I went back and was able to get another perm a couple of weeks later. I think I tipped for her to fix it.

In your case I would ask for the whole amount for perm + trim for the refund (but not including tip unless she offers it to you). Then use that money towards possibly getting it fixed at another salon. And do not buy the straightener! You can definitely find one cheaper elsewhere.

Good luck!

Thanks again, ladies! Your commiseration and advice has made me feel a lot better despite this crummy situation.

@Mrs J - nope! She mentioned she was going to trim my hair a little after perming it to make sure it was even but I never asked for a trim. I was also told the highlights start at $75 and was charged $125 which, fine. But now to get charged for a trim I didn't ask for and for her to keep the $50 and the tip for the perm and trim seems a bit greedy. She says she normally charges $75 for a haircut but only charges $50 when it's with a perm.

I'm sad because I thought they did a good job with the highlights and really liked the salon the first time around. Plus it's really near my house, which makes it super convenient. Would it be tacky for me to go back and use another stylist for haircuts and highlights in the future (just never again a perm!!!) after all this?

My hair right now has basically lost almost all its curl and is just a pile of pouf. It is just sitting there in its huge, hair-bally glory. Maybe I'll be brave and post a photo tomorrow, but it'll definitely have my face covered haha! I usually don't like to post photos of myself on public forums but I'm tempted because it's one of those situations where something is so bad it almost becomes funny. Almost.

I go back tomorrow for my refund. Do I push for the full or ask at least for the tip back? I don't want to be greedy or tacky...I just want what is typically given! Ugh, I hate doing these types of things. Also, I'm curious too - do you not tip salon owners?

Side note, am I correct in thinking you're not even supposed to tip the owner of a business? I would definitely push for a full refund. She screwed up and is unable to offer a reasonable solution.

What a nightmare! I'm assuming you will not go back to this salon again, so I think it doesn't hurt to call her back and ask for a FULL refund. She is sort of acknowledging that they are at fault, and should have offered you the straightener for free, since she's suggesting that is how you should fix the situation. I think it doesn't hurt to go to another salon for a consult, you don't have to do anything more to your hair with chemicals, but maybe they could give you suggestions for products to try.

Yes, I'm with the others--she owes you a full refund. Honestly, I would make a huge stink if she refused (I hate doing it, but come on. You should NOT have to pay for her mistake.).

I don't know much about how straightening interacts with a perm, but you can absolutely get a good straightener for much cheaper. Check Groupon or Living Social if you're willing to wait a week or so for shipping. CHIs are good too--Target has one on sale, and you get a $15 gift card with your purchase. Maybe the hairstylist could loan you one while you're stuck with her perm!

I also swear by the John Frida moisture barrier hairspray to keep frizz down.

Ugh--what a bad situation. I hope you're able to get it all straightened out!

Mainly what other people said, but also, I highly recommend NOT buying their straightener, even at the "discounted" price. You can find tons of high quality straighteners cheaper than that, and I wouldn't want to give them any additional business when they've been so unsatisfactory.

For the refund, I would just take what she's offering and move on. As for what to do going forward, I would absolutely not use a straight iron. Coloring, perms, and straightening are all hard on your hair, and your hair is extra sensitive after a perm. That sounds like a recipe for a lot of hair breakage. Not to mention the fact that they shouldn't get any more of your money.

I'm not a hair stylist, but my mom was for years and years, so I've used a lot of products and had a lot done to my hair over the years. I'd recommend getting a smoothing serum or spray with as few chemicals as possible. That should help to soften the curls as you style it, but not fry it more. I would dry it as little as possible.

Ugh, sorry she wasn't able to do much for you  I would expect the full amount of money back though!! As a salon owner I think its unreasonable of her not give you a FULL refund.

I once had a similar experience with a bad colour job and when I returned the next day and shared my utter displeasure with the result, she promptly and without question, refunded my money. I think its just good business practice at the very least.

@serenity207: You need to call around to other salons, explain what happened on the phone, ask for solutions if you theoretically made an appointment, compare and answers, and GO ELSEWHERE.

You can absolutely loosen a perm. A salon can do a strand test (to see if your hair can take more chemicals) and they can apply new perm solution to your hair and use giant rollers or even just pull gently on each existing curl while the solution is on to relax it. Waaaayyy back in the day (the 80's) when both of my older sisters got "spiral perms" for about 4 years straight, I saw them loosen a couple of perms-gone-wrong with good results. So hair salons probably have an even better, more gentle solution now.

@serenity207: how awful! They obviously used too small of rods. I would say no more chemicals for sure. I've had perms most of my life, and it will relax over time. Straightening it wouldn't be horrible, but I wouldn't want to do it every day!

I would want my money back. I don't think you should have to pay for the "hair cut" but maybe you could tip the owner for trying to fix it?

You can get a good flat iron for cheaper than that.

Thanks everyone for your advice and sympathy. I know this is such a first world problem and I kind of feel like an ass for being so upset about it, but getting my hair done is still pretty new to me and feels like a huge splurge. And then to walk away looking literally like a poodle that got its paw into an electric socket is so...tragic. Haha!

I went back this morning and the owner tried to play it off cool a bit which annoyed me more. We decided to try washing it and seeing if it loosened the curls up a bit and she also put more product in while it was wet to see if that would help with the frizz. Well, 30 minutes later and the answer was a big, fat NOPE.

When I called to tell her it wasn't any better (just the slightest bit but, really, still a pile of fuzz), she was a lot nicer about it and said she felt sick to her stomach because she never had this happen before where a customer was so unhappy with a perm. But she also agreed that the frizz was NOT the typical case and my perm shouldn't look like it does. So she offered me a refund, but she's saying $125 instead of the $175 I paid because she said she charges $50 for the trim. She barely cut my hair (I would say it was 5 min, 10 max). What do you ladies think about that? Plus, if she refunds me $125 that doesn't include the 20% tip I included for the perm and cut!

Also, she said the best option from here would be just to use a straightening iron on it every day. 1) I'm worried about further damaging my hair and 2) I don't even own a hair straightener. The one they sell is $175 but she said she would give it to me for $125.

What do you ladies think?? Is this a fair deal? What would you do?

I've never had a perm done, but I get my hair highlighted/colored every 6 weeks and I would not recommend having another treatment so soon. When I moved from NYC to pa and switched salons it took me about a year of trying out new stylists to finally get it right. I would also not go back to the same stylist who ruined my hair unless you really think she's competent and maybe just didn't understand you. As far as getting money back - you never get what you don't ask for, but don't go back to this salon again if they say no.

No experience with a bad perm, but I did have to go in for a re-do on a style that lasted all of 1-2 days. I wasn't charged again.

Do not tip again. I read in a magazine once that you don't need to tip salon owners just staff anyway.

They permed your hair knowing it's color-treated? I don't know, maybe things have changed, but I was always told you can't do both types of treatments to your hair. I definitely wouldn't put it through any more processing. I'd wash it and see how it falls-- you're not supposed to wash a perm for days, so you might be able to get rid, or mostly rid, of it. I could be way off base, I'm not a hairstylist. I hope you or they can fix it!

@serenity207: out of curiosity, could you post a pic of the hair (with your face blocked out if you wanted)? I've had several perms in recent years and the beachy wavy ones didn't start out as ramen-poodle. Sure, they were a little tighter for the first few days but not to the extent you're describing. The real bad one I had was gross from the moment I stepped out of the salon and just became even
frizzier and nastier with time. With such a bad job I don't know that I'd trust the same person to fix it. Esp being that she was the owner, and owners are supposed to be the best. In my case I just ate the cost and got another perm at a different salon a month later. I didn't fix it immediately cause I was still hoping it would relax a bit (never happened) and also I didn't want to put my hair through so much processing within a short period of time. If I were to go back to have them fix it, I don't think I'd offer to pay or tip.

I checked out a new hair salon last week to get my roots touched up. The hair salon had been recommended by two friends and also had high ratings on Yelp so I felt pretty good going in. The touch up went well and I returned today to get my hair beach permed (as in beachy, loose waves). The salon owner worked on my hair and we had discussed what I was looking for at the touch up - I also showed her a picture of the look I was going for.

Cut to two hours later and I look like I have strings of ramen noodles hanging from my head. She said we had to let it air dry and that it would loosen up a bit, but I had a bad feeling about this. My hair was so curly up to my scalp, whereas the picture I had shown her had straighter hair on top that led to waves on the bottom. But, I decided to just wait it out for a little bit and give it a chance.

By the time I got home, I looked like the Bride of Frankenstein. I kid you not. I hardly ever pay to get anything done to my hair other than a haircut so this was a huge chunk of money for me to spend on it. It. was. BAD.

I don't know why I felt bad about calling the salon (probably because everyone there was so nice) but I did. I felt really bad doing that, but I also couldn't justify NOT saying anything when I paid so much $$ to have this done.

So, I'm going back in the morning to see what can be done about my hair. I really may cry if this can't be fixed and I'm not usually one to get dramatic about this type of thing. Can you even redo a perm so quickly?? Also, in this case, what would you expect financially? Would you expect them to refund the full amount of the perm if they can't fix it? If they can fix it, I'm assuming they won't charge me for it, but do I tip again and, if so, how much? I tipped 20% both times I went to the salon (so twice in a week since they said I couldn't do a root touch up and perm in the same day) and also tipped separately for the women who washed my hair. Lastly, I think the owner is going to be the one who tries to fix my hair, but I'm scared she'll only make it worse! What would you do in my shoes?

I am definitely freaking out that I spent so much money and look like utter crap. I had asked for this treat as a Christmas gift from my husband, and will be so sad if all of this ends up being a huge waste of time and money. I can't even emphasize how bad this looks. Total poodle hair. NOT beachy, loose waves! :crying:
