I did that same sort of situation - started adding formula when my LO was four months and I slowly took out afternoon pumping sessions over the next two months ( I used to pump 2-3 times in the afternoon, so I would take one session out, wait a week, then take another one out and wait a couple more weeks). I only felt engorged for a few days and my body adjusted pretty quickly - never leaked during the day. I was nursing twice in the morning and pumping once a night to keep up my supply.

I'm sort of in the same situation with dropping daytime pumps to wean her off BM and onto whole milk. I dropped my midnight pump session, then a few weeks later I dropped 1 of the 2 work time pump sessions. Essentially I nurse in the morning, pump at work midday, nurse for bedtime and that's it. Dropping the midnight session was a lot harder than the daytime in terms of engorgement - it was bad for a few days then my body adjusted. I'm a little afraid to drop the last pump session in a few weeks since that will only leave two nursing sessions.

I had a coworker who did exactly what you described. She didn't pump at work but nursed morning and evening. Your body will adjust, but i agree with @purpletulips to taper down so you don't risk mastitis.

When stop pumping cold turkey but rather slowly wean from the pump. When I stopped I didn't have any problems but I dropped one session a week for three weeks.

My daughter is now 4 months and my goal was to breastfeed until 6 months. I think I can make it, but am wondering what we do once we get to 6 months. Ideally I'd like to use formula during the day (for both daycare and weekends), but nurse in the morning and at night.

Anyone that has done this - does your body really adjust when you stop pumping during the day? Or do you just feel engorged all the time because you are nursing so little? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
