@ilovepie: That's a good point about heavy duty hooks. We're still daycare age so our backpacks just have spare clothes in them. I'm sure the hooks I have wouldn't hold up to bags full of books!

We also have hooks and a bench with a shoe rack built in the bottom. That system works very well for us!

We also did hooks. I only put in a couple for the kids, and it's definitely not enough. One of these days, will add some more.

We also have separate everything: bench and hooks and a cubbie (just a 4 cube shelf, 2 high, with baskets on the top and shoes on the bottom). I like that it was all cheap (shelf and bench were hand me downs) and I can rework it as they get older.

Definitely get heavy duty hooks and anchor them well in the wall. Our kids pulled them both out at least once but now with good long anchored screws they can hold a full backpack.

Maybe not as elegant as an official tree, but functional and a lot cheaper - we went with separate benches and coat hooks so we could adjust the height to what we need. If you match wood tones they look like they belong together.

Here are hooks we have: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Franklin-Brass-26-51-in-Black-and-Satin-Nickel-Light-Duty-Flared-Tri-Hook-Rack-FBLDFT5-BSE-R/310597208

Here is an example of a bench with cubbies: https://www.homedepot.com/pep/SAFAVIEH-Lonan-Black-Storage-Bench-AMH5733E/206703037
though I probably would go with a different color cushion than white for a mud room

I am trying to find a hall tree (I think this is what the entry way thing is called with cubbies & then hooks for backpacks/jackets?) to put near our garage door. I don't want to spend a TON of money as we plan to redo the space in a couple years.... but we need a solution for now as the kids stuff has been a mess the last couple years.

Do these things exist where kids (mine are 5...) can reach the hooks and hang up their stuff without climbing on it? I'm seeing hooks generally at the 5foot height.......

:(
