I was re-reading this thread because a kid's consignment store in my town has a used Bassinest available. I noted that she said the previous owners only used it for a week, so great it's not beat up but they obviously didn't care for it much! I am going to look at it today.

I'm considering the Halo bassinet this time around. We also have a really high bed, so I like the adjustable feature. I didn't get it for DS because my MIL was soooo excited about DS using the wooden bassinet that DH and his brother used. They had it refinished, but I had to buy a mattress and sheets for it, and because it was a weird size, I ended up spending close to $100 for something that I didn't really want to use anyway. DS didn't like it, and I hated have to bend down so far to place him in it. It's really low to the ground. We ended up co-sleeping until he could stay in his crib in his room overnight. We ended up piling laundry in it like @Mrs. Lemon-Lime, and I think the cats started sleeping in it at one point.

@ValentineMommy: ooh good point about glasses! I have terrible eyesight too! major bonus points for the bassinet then!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: good point about bed height! ours isn't high so we should be okay on that front...

@erinbaderin: really good point about selling after! this is most likely our last baby plus we'll prob be moving within 2 years so will be getting rid of stuff anyway!

@agold: bedbugs aren't usually active in daylight (dh was pretty sure they hitchhiked home with him from a movie theater...), and we steer VERY clear of any furniture that's been left out on curbs when we're walking, so that's not so much of a concern for us. but good point! and also it's great to hear about the specific functions you like!

@MOMTOLITTLEB: ugh it seems like all baby gear is so hit or miss! I wish we'd gotten an rnp last time instead of a bouncer and mamaroo, it's so hard to tell what a given baby will like!

Bought this used and didn't like it...sold it before he outgrew it even since I wasn't using it. He never wanted to sleep in it. I'd recommend a RNP or similar. I had a PNP with the newborn snuggler or something for my first and thought the halo would be perfect for not having to get up out of bed...just didn't work out for us and I ended up using the newborn snuggler (basically a RNP with much smaller weight limits so i'd go for one of those...). But luckily these are so popular right now I was able to re-sell for a bit less than what I paid 3 months prior (since I got used as well...)

I am considering this bassinet. It's tough to buy something so expensive that can be so hit or miss but it's likely I'll have a second c section. I need a bassinet one way or another because I don't have one.

I should have mentioned the halo bassinet was used on extremely high beds. After my c-section I had to use my step ladder to get into bed without causing discomfort. That may have contributed to my dislike.

I got the halo when I came home from the hospital wth a nasty tear. I couldn't easily get out of bed. I love having the baby eye level to me. I love the mesh sides and the little light feature since I'm constantly wanting to see her face. The is better than shining a cell phone on her sleeping face.

After week two, I had to get the Rock and play because she was breathing funny at night so the incline was needed. I'd like to move her back to the halo this weekend.

I have the mamaroo. I don't really think it's similar to the rock and play. Different functions.

Regarding sheets for the uppa baby bassinet... Uppa baby sells sheets for it for pretty cheap? Why not use that? But also... The stroller bassinet goes outside in the public... If you are worried about things like bed bugs, you might not want the public germs on your outdoor stroller bassinet to be pushed up next to your bed every night.

We got one for our second LO and loved it.

I'm a 2 time csec mama. We didn't have a bassinet for DS1. He was either in the pnp or rnp next to the bed. At the time I thought it was ok, but it was extremely difficult for me to get to quickly, because of the csec.

With DS2, it was so much easier having the bassinest. The swivel made it easy for me to get in and out of bed. The lowering side made it easy to get him in and out of it without me getting out of bed. And I felt much more bonded to him having him right next to me.

Also, and this is a totally personal thing....I am extremely near sighted. I literally can only see clearly to the end of my nose without my glasses on. Having DS2 so close to me made it easier to see him and know he was ok without fumbling around for my glasses at night every time he stirred.

@CedarMagnolia: We used the UB bassinet for our first and it was fine. We kept it on a stand beside the bed and he slept in it until he was about 4 months and basically his head and feet were touching each end. For sheets we just wrapped a receiving blanket over the pad and tucked all the ends under.

@nana87: We got the Bassinest for our second - I liked it because it was very sturdy and the toddler couldn't pull it over. I hardly used any of the features, even the drop down side, but I liked that I could have it at the same height as the bed, I liked being able to see him through the mesh, and I liked the swivel. We used it from five weeks until about four months, although for the first month of that we put the newborn napper that came with our playpen inside it to make it more snuggly. Also we bought it used on kijiji for $180 and sold it four months later for $160.

Edit to add that I just saw your concerns about bedbugs, so sounds like buying used isn't an option, but you could still recoup the bulk of your money by selling it after.

@nana87: for the first month LO slept on us on the couch. We took shifts to "safely" allow him to sleep like that. He napped occasionally in his Dream bassinet. After a week or so of LO cosleeping in the bed with me on my shift I put him in his crib for night time sleeping.

Except for us all of LO's sleeping spaces have been flat. We bought a wedge for the crib when he had reflux and LO would scoot to the flat part of his crib.

@nana87: I always thought the aftermath sounded like the worst part though, and expensive. good for your husband for getting a handle on it, but I don't blame him for being traumatized--I know someone who had them twice and she literally went on anxiety meds for six months. and lol on the classic NYC bedroom. I used to have a lofted bed with 4 inches on one side, and it was *impossible* to change the sheets up there. so glad we have moved on!

@LCTBQE: haha! I actually didn't even get bit by the bugs--it happened while I was out of town, so I only had to deal with the aftermath of cleaning, treating all of our possessions, etc. dh was completely traumatized and miserable even though he noticed the bugs before it got out of control, so we're both so paranoid now!

ETA also such an NYC thing that at our last apartment, our bedroom was literally just wide enough to fit our bed! dh had to climb in from the foot of our bed, whereas I had about 6 inches of clearance on my side ;)

@CedarMagnolia: I thought using the UB bassinet worked totally fine for the month we used it, and liked that we could move her around outside as well. My hesitation with using it for overnight sleep this time has to do with being a little nervous about the lack of mesh sides--I'd rather the material be breathable, and for me to be able to see in while lying down rather than sitting up (last time there wasn't enough space between the bed and our wall in our bedroom to fit it anyway, so I had to get out of bed anyway to see into it). Also, I thought about buying the UB stand that goes with it rather than just using the stroller frame, and it's so expensive by itself that I started considering other options!

We bought extra sheets for the UB bassinet--I forget how many spares we had, but it was several because lo had lots of blowouts as a newborn and we don't have a washer/dryer in unit. There are probably hacks like using a pillowcase that would be cheaper...but we just bought spares.

@nana87: I've heard a lot of people sell them barely-used on craigslist or a local parent FB group because so many babies either don't like it or are lukewarm, like @MrsSCB: said. Maybe you could find one in great shape for cheap that way just to try? ETA I thought about getting one, too--they're really nice-looking. But my 5-week old also sleeps in a RNP :) we're moving him to his crib in the next few weeks.

@nana87: Just jumping in to the conversation to ask how you found using the UB bassinet for your first little one? That's what we are planning on doing (already bought it)! We know it isn't as ideal a height and doesn't have the flexible sides, but we thought it might be a good use of money to be able to use it outside as well.

One thing I don't really understand though is what do you do for bassinet sheets? Do you just use the mattress provided as is, and buy a spare, or did you put anything on it? I saw someone on another forum suggested using a pillowcase as a bassinet fitted sheet, but that doesn't sound safe to me.....

@nana87: I think he's right, that there's not much point to getting one if you have the Mamaroo! They're basically both the same idea--inclined a little and cozier than a bassinet or crib. We don't even use the vibrate feature on the RNP, he sleeps in it totally stationary.

@MrsSCB: very true about survival mode! I tried to get dh to look at the RNPs last weekend when we were glancing around Buy Buy Baby (mostly to see the Halo in person) since I always see people on here talking about them, but he doesn't get how it'd be different from the Mamaroo which we already have, plus in an apt we have space issues. I don't think we'll get one unless we get really desperate for something else to try!

I have it, though my work bought it for my shower so we didn't actually pay for it. I like the features, like the swiveling and the side that you can push down. Unfortunately my son will only deign to sleep in it for naps and only sometimes... :-/ If I were purchasing a bassinet myself, I'd prob get a cheaper one in case baby hates it.

@nana87: I considered getting it but decided it wasnt worth it for us since you can only use the bassinet for a few months. So we ended up getting a delta gliding bassinet instead
