@maybebaby: oh my gosh I'm sorry :( Yeah it was awful having all four of us sick at once. Thankfully our kids had a pretty mild case of it, and even though they didn't eat much (they probably had sores in their mouths / throats) it was mostly just flulike symptoms. But yeah, these daycare illnesses are just roughsauce. I hope J doesn't have it too bad and he gets better soon!!!!!

Ugh just seeing this now because I googled it! J has HFM :( It is running rampant in daycares around here. He had a fever all weekend but it was down yesterday so he went into daycare. When he came home the spots were on his hands. I called the pedi and they said it is a standard virus, rampant at daycares, and if the fever is gone they are OK to go to daycare (of course pending daycare's policies). I am crossing my fingers we don't get sick next...I can't imagine all four of you sick at once, how sad!!!

@mrs. wagon: Xander was young (around 6 months I think) and didn't really seem overly bothered by HFM! Though we were lucky and never were affected by the mouth portion which I hear is the worst! And I definitely had it worse than Xander (oh god, the itchiness!!!!) But hopefully you guys are past it, though definitely keep a look out for it because it may still be coming!

@Mamaof2: aww poor baby!!! so sad.. but she's so cuuuute!

@locavore_mama: yeah, they only have a rule about fever. Both kids were home for 3 days, Wagon Jr. 3.5 (and he has no blisters) so fingers crossed it was mild enough to be gone!!

@Adira: we've got prescription hydrocortizone which seemed to help, but not get rid of the flared up eczema, but she's not itching so that's good. I'm so scared of the blisters-- I keep checking and checking!! I think Wagon Jr. is thoroughly perplexed as to why I keep checking the bottoms of his feet.

Ugh, Xander and I both got HFM and it was HORRIBLE! For ME! Xander didn't seem overly bothered by it, haha.

It did really affect his eczema though - his eczema totally flared up and he had red blisters all over his body! But we got some prescription hydrocortisone and that totally helped and he seemed to get over it pretty quickly.

But days later, I got my finger symptoms! Tiny bumps started popping up on my fingers and toes. The ones on my toes HURT - it felt like walking on pins and needles. The ones on my fingers both hurt AND were super itchy!!! Sooooooo itchy. Finally after 3 days, the blisters faded and then about a week later, the peeling started.

We didn't keep Xander home from daycare at all during this. When his symptoms first started, we thought it was just his eczema and didn't even realize he had HFM. It wasn't until I was diagnosed with it that we knew he must've had it and by then he was pretty much over it!

Oh no!!! LO got it a little over a month ago. I believe we got called on a Tuesday. Wednesdays are with ILs. Thursday DH was off. She still had blisters in her mouth and we had saw new ones on Wednesday so we didn't feel comfortable sending her. So we asked BIL to watch her Friday. So in total she stayed home for 5 days.
I forgot what my daycare rule on HFM was. I think it's when the blisters have "scabbed" over.

You should call daycare and see what their rule is. Also DH got HFM as well and his didn't show up till almost a week later. :( It started with fatigue and he felt like a cold was coming on.

My DD got it and it was awful!!! She cried a lot and wouldn't eat anything but popsicles - her blisters were on her mouth and lips - high fever too - she missed an entire week of school!
Here are 2 pics - you can see the ones on her mouth and her tongue

Oh my gosh, it has been a LONG weekend. I got a call before lunch on Thursday to pick up Wagon Jr. from daycare with a fever of 102.5. The night before I had noticed he was warm, but in the morning he had no fever so we sent him to daycare. All weekend long his fever went up and down, and finally on Saturday it went down to 99 and stayed there. Phew.

Funny thing is, when we picked up LMW from daycare on Thursday afternoon they mentioned that HFM was going around her room. We were hoping for the best since she didn't have any symptoms or fever, but we basically locked ourselves in our home the entire weekend... Thursday afternoon until this morning. Wagon Sr. left a few times to pick up food or quick groceries, but I did not leave the house once.

The entire weekend Wagon Sr. and I felt malaise-y and achy. LMW was a whiny mess all weekend long. She would walk around just crying. We'd try to offer her everything and she would just turn her head from us and cry. She woke up from her afternoon nap yesterday covered in vomit :( :( and we noticed a few blisters on her hand. Then we realized that her eczema (on that arm) all week had looked different-- blister-y with a few scattered little dots with raised heads.

But this morning the dots were flat and she woke up totally happy-- no whining or crying at all. Still no fever for her and she was acting and eating totally fine. Both kids ate their whole breakfast and were acting totally 100%, so off to daycare they went and off to work we went.

So I'm guessing that we all had a mild case of HFM all weekend... I keep checking myself for blisters, but nothing. And of course all the googling I'm doing comes to the conclusion that it's just a virus, there's no treatment, it's highly contagious, and you just gotta let it run its course, which could be 3-7 days depending on severity. Since we all started getting sick on Thursday/Friday, I'm crossing my fingers that we are all out of the woods!

That was the first time all 4 of us were sick at the same time, and I'm VERY thankful that it was as mild as it was. We all just slept a lot. Our sink (one of those extra wide, farm-style sinks) got completely full of dishes, I think for the first time since we had kids. We ordered takeout a few times, which we haven't been doing lately. We watched A LOT of Bubble Guppies.

I love my kids and I enjoy every single second I get with them, especially as a WOHM I really treasure each second, even this weekend. But BOY did it feel good to drop them off this morning. Both of them RAN in and did not even look back.

Anyone else get HFM in their home? When did you feel like it was ok to send the kids back to school or daycare?
