Xander had a mild case of it around 6 months. It didn't really seem to bother him and he didn't have the mouth portion of it. But I caught it and it SUCKED for ME!!! My hands and feet were soooooooooo itchy and sore!!!! And then after the itchy blisters go away, your skin peels for weeks!!! Luckily, I didn't have the sores in the mouth, which I hear are the worst part!

@boogiebea: How wonderful that your LO didn't even need to see a doctor and only had a mild case. Were the sores on her hands and mouth really noticeable? I worry that I'll miss signs like those.

@locavore_mama: So sorry for DH. I'm glad his sores are starting to disappear. This is one weird illness!

My daughter caught it about a month ago and it was brutal. She was so miserable for a few days because she had sores in her mouth. She would cry every time she tried to eat. She also had sores on her hands.

Unfortunately, DH caught it from her and he was in SO much pain. He had tons of sores in his mouth. His body was SO achey like he lifted weights for three hours straight! He actually went to urgent care!!! That shows you just how uncomfortable he was. It's almost three weeks for him and his sores are just starting to disappear.

So yeah, there are definitely varying degrees of HFM.

My daughter got a mild case of it a couple weeks ago. She got some sores on her hands and a couple in her mouth. She didn't have a fever and she didn't get any worse, luckily. Our doctor didn't even need to see her. It went away a few days later.

We had it this fall and it wasn't terrible but M couldn't eat for a few days and cried hysterically every time she tried. It's a mild childhood illness.

Thanks, everyone. It sounds unpleasant, but I'm glad to hear that hand, foot and mouth disease is not too prolonged and not uncommon. For some reason when DS's daycare provider first mentioned it I thought of mad cow disease and freaked out.

@mrsf: Glad to hear you guys have avoided it so far. I'm hoping that since DS hasn't caught it since he hasn't shown any symptoms yet.

@mamabehr: Bottoms of her feet! Poor baby

@gracecat: I didn't realize adults could get it, too. Glad your case was mild.

@shinymama: DS's daycare provider is disinfecting everything at her house, too.

3 of M's friends have had it this fall and 3 parents in our group have had it as well :( I don't know how we've managed to avoid it but I hope your LO does too!

DD had it when she was a little over 2. It started with a fever, that she had for 24 hours, and then got spots around and in her mouth, palm of her hands, and bottoms of her feet. She just felt icky, and didn't want to eat. She was super fussy, but certainly not the worse disease she has had.

It's extremely contagious but usually not too serious. Pretty mild as illnesses go but some babies can get painful sores inside their mouth or throat. My girl got a few spots around her forearms and knees and a mild fever one night and that was it. Adults can get it too. I caught it from DD but mine was mild too. My friends DH caught it from their son and he got it bad on his palms and soles of his feet and said it hurt so much to walk! So I guess it can vary....

My oldest got it at daycare when he was 1.5 - on his face and hands. Thankfully he didn't get it inside his mouth which I hear is more painful. I had to keep him home, he was slightly miserable, and EVERYTHING had to be disinfected.

DS has been out of daycare all week except Monday (my mom is visiting - hooray!). His daycare provider just told me today that another baby who comes every once and awhile, and was there on Monday, has hand, foot and mouth disease. DS actually went to the doctor today to see if he had an ear infection (he doesn't) and he was fine. Based on the research I've done it doesn't sound like hand, foot and mouth disease is much more than a virus, but I'm pretty uneasy about this. Does anyone have any experience with this illness?
