Update: We were cajoled into going to urgent care today by a couple girls at work whose kids also go to the same daycare.

LO had a fever last night after my post but ibuprofen helped. The doctor said she doesn't have HFM but a related virus that is milder. So, she has a weird rash (ie a bunch of tiny little red spots) all over her body, which aren't bothering her. No mouth sores, which is what I was dreading most. Doctor says go on vacation and have a nice time. Take meds with.

Mainly, when ibuprofen wears off she's miserable and whiny, but I'm sure she'll be cured or on the mend before we leave.

Thanks for everyone's response.

In light of all the recent posts about the insanity here, I just want to say that this is what I come to HB for. Advice and experience from other moms. And that's what I get, and I appreciate everyone's willingness to weigh in. My topics are usually pretty tame. Like HFM.

Thanks again!

@JennyD: We just dealt with this a couple weeks ago. My DD got it from daycare. She had a mild fever and runny nose and got those little bumps on her thighs. The next day she had red spots on her feet and the palms of her hand. We took her to the pediatrician and he said she had a few sores in her mouth. She didn't do too bad. Three nights of a few night wakings. I gave her a bottle with an ounce or two of cold water when she woke up.

Things that helped her were drinking bottles super cold (I even put an ice cube in one!) and sucking on frozen peaches in one of those mesh feeders. I also gave her infant ibuprofen at night. She also got some diarrhea from it so I made sure to use a ton of diaper rash cream.

I caught it from her and I think I had a worse experience than DD did! I had terrible sores in my mouth, but they only lasted 3 days. I also had sore spots on my feet and hands but they didn't turn into full blown blisters. I stole some of my daughter's Orajel from teething to use - I know they make it for adults, but I really didn't want to spend the money when I knew they'd go away in 3 days. The baby kind totally worked.

Both of mine had mild cases, maybe 36 hours of fever and then another day of fussiness due to the sores, so a little over 2 days of unhappy kids, then they were fine. The sores lasted for another week but didn't seem to bother them. Based on what you're describing, sounds like you have it but hopefully will be a very mild case!

LO had a very mild case. She had a low grade fever for one evening. And she never really had a mouth issue so feeding was never impacted. Her spots/blisters were mostly on her extremities but not necessarily hands and feet.

Make sure you and DH are very cautious. My DH got it about 10 days after LO and he had a much more severe case. His hands, feet and throat were covered. He ended up losing all of his fingernails as well from the blisters.

Our family ordeal was just before a vacation as well. DH was miserable for about the first 3 days.

We got an email saying it was going around daycare, and sure enough, LO came down with a high fever a few days later. Fever cleared up within a day and I spent two days obsessively checking for sores and only found a couple tiny spots that really could have been anything. Honestly I'll never know if she even had HFM, but the timing seems right, so I think she just had a super mild case. She was back to herself within a couple days.

My LO had HFM around Easter. She had a fever, diarrhea, diaper rash and a handful of blisters. So pretty mild. Didn't seem too bothered by it. But DH got it BAD. Really bad. So be careful that you don't catch it. Lots of hand washing and forgo kisses around your babe's mouth.

My girl had a mild fever one night and then developed spots around her knees and elbows and that was it. Pretty mild. Then I got it, fever one night and spots on my arms and legs but that was it. It really varies so there are very mild and very bad. What was the worst was having to quarantine ourselves and going stir crazy!

My LO started to get sick on a Thursday and was fine by Monday. We left for a four night backpacking trip on Tuesday and she was totally fine. She had a mild case (2 days of fever, some rash on her belly and feet).

DH, LO & I got it. DH and I just had cold symptoms. LO acted like she had any other fever. The spots were gross but they didn't slow her down at all. She ate normally even though the doctor found pretty nasty looking sores in her mouth. In hindsight I should have declined his offer to look at them.

My little one had it over Christmas and it was not a terribly big deal. I don't think she ever got a fever, or if she did it was a mild one for just one night (can't remember). Besides the blisters, the main thing I noticed was that she had some fairly rough nights (up crying for an hour+, wanted to sleep laying across my chest - could also have been due to the fact we were traveling/at my sister's house or teething) and was crankier than usual for the first day or two. After that, they scabbed over quickly. We still had a great trip!

Well, mine was sick, but only for a weekend. I picked him up from daycare and they said he was running a fever (normally they'd call but I was going to be there soon to pick up anyway).

It was a rough weekend--he barely ate, was up so much during the night that we just brought him to bed with us (he wanted to be close to us), and we pretty much vegged on the couch watching movies during the day and trying to keep him hydrated (and giving him whatever food he would eat--lots of bananas)
.
By Monday he was fine to go back to daycare (some marks still, but not blisters, and no fever for 24hrs which is what our daycare needed).

So it sucked for a few days but ended up being a pretty mild case that passed quickly. Hope you get an easy go of it!

Anyone have any non-horror stories about hand foot and mouth?

Disclaimer! I am not "that mother"! We're going on vacation next week and I would love to not have a sick toddler.

Daycare sent out an email on Monday saying a couple kids had been confirmed with it, so I picked her up early and today I took her to Gramma's house. She hasn't shown any signs of being sick.

BUT today when I picked her up, I noticed she had weird little red spots (very small ones) on her belly, thighs, back and the bottoms of her feet. They are not blistering, and she seems fine. Eating, drinking, being a general pest.

Anyone have HFM and not get really sick? Please feel free to make my day :)
