So far I havent felt the need to use a handicapped spot and I am in my 3rd trimester. Plus walking is good excercise for me, so I dont mind parking in a regular space.

Whatever happened to those expectant mother parking spots? When I was growing up all the stores had them. Now I only see them at one store.

I wish we had special parking for expectant mothers in our area. That'd be nice especially since I'll have my 2 year old with me during errands. Walking long distances carrying shopping/grocery/whatever bags and looking after my 2 year doesn't sound like fun or healthy to me.

@tequiero21: That's exactly what happened to me when I was shopping at Home Depot. I would get major Braxton Hicks after a long shopping trip (those home depots are huge!) and it didn't feel right for some reason. But who knows. I think I'm still gonna try to take it easy during my third trimester this time around though. I want to avoid pre-term labor again if possible.

I think if there were complications that warranted it, I might consider it, but around here, many places have special parking for expectant mothers that's sometimes even closer than the handicapped parking. I would probably just use those if I really needed to be walking less.

I think that for a normal pregnancy, it's a bit excessive, but if you have an additional issues/complications then it might be warranted. That being said, my job is on a gated complex, and most people have to park outside the gate and walk 1/4 mile (and it's up a giant hill) to their office. I know in the past they have let pregnant women drive inside the gate and park closer late in their pregnancy. There may be some days where I take advantage of that! But I'm not taking a handicapped spot that someone else might need, so I don't view it as exactly the same thing.

I think there is no shame asking for one if you are having a difficult pregnancy (it would never have occurred to me to ask, though!). Just because you're pregnant, it doesn't mean life ends and you can just sit on your butt at home. What if you already have other kids? It might be an option for your first child to never go to the store and have your husband do it or something but I think that becomes less realistic once you're expecting #2 or more. I remember doing absolutely nothing in my 1st trimester except going to work because I was so exhausted. But if I am pregnant again, this isn't gonna happen and if I really need that pass then heck yeah I would ask for it. No reason to be a martyr if I was really feeling that terrible and I also had to get my toddler into the store with me.

i don't think i would unless my doctor is the one who recommended it for me. yesterday, i walked a bit to go to my appointment and i think it brought on some crazy braxton hicks. so now, i'm definitely more open to it. lol.

We've got parking spots dedicated for women and families, so there'd be no need. I like the family spots because they tend to be wider, so there's more room to buckle up the car seats and get the strollers in.

Nope, but when I was in the last 2 months, I just went to work, sat on my butt and went back home. Going to a store was too much work, even with the pregnant parking spaces! I used a moterized cart at one point. Hey, I was HUGE and swollen with water to the point of looking like I was about to pop!LOL

I would only get it if something was really that bad. At work, I park pretty close anyway, and at the mall--actually it would be a big deal. I usually have to park a 5-10 minute walk from the mall and it gives me cramps to go from the super cold to the warm mall so I just avoid the mall now. If I had the parking pass, I'd go to the mall more (good for the stores).
Still, I wouldn't ask for a pass. Even if I needed one, I'd be too embarrassed to ask.

This is interesting! I've never heard of it...but depending on the situation, I can see how one could qualify for a handicapped placard. I did use to always see designated spaces for pregnant women. I was super excited to be able to use them when I became pregnant but then... they were no where to be found!

I think it is really unnecessary, I am sure that you go to the mall/store intending on walking around, so I don't really see in that case why you would need one. Also, unless you are on bed rest or restricted activity (and if you are, should you be walking all around the mall/a store), the activity is good for you!

A lot of people recommended it to me given that I was pregnant in the heart of last summer in Texas heatwave (were talking ridiculous number of days of 100+ heat). I didn't even entertain it as my doctor was adamant about controlling diet and trying to exercise during my pregnancy. I tend to think pregnancy is a self inflicted temporary condition and not a disability.

That being said, I have a co-worker who has an arthritis condition that was significantly worse during her pregnancy (to the point of walking with a cane) - she had a hang tag, and I think it was warranted. It was the underlying condition that was intensified by the pregnancy hormone surge though.

Honestly, I don't think I would, even with multiples. While I'm concerned about preterm labor, if it's bad enough that I can't walk from a normal space, how am I supposed to walk around the store? If it's that risky, I think I'd be better off at home.

But I probably won't be able to fit behind the wheel well by the 3rd tri, so I don't know that I would be driving anyway!

Interesting feedback. My LO was born pre-term so I'm worried about strenuous activity. During my 8th month, I did TONS of walking (mainly to and from home depot because we were undergoing a major remodel). And I remember feeling like something wasn't right. I'll have to ask my doc about exercising in the 3rd trimester (whether I should be doing it or not) based on my previous pregnancy experience.

@rubies: Wow, that's definitely not right! I think those spaces are totally for people who need it.

I've never heard of this but I wouldn't have asked for one if I did know. I think that there are people who really need those parking spaces and my desire for one doesn't warrant it. I know a person who is deaf in one ear and is legally entitled to a parking pass - he has one and flaunts it! I don't think it's right.

My best friend asked her doctor for a handicapped parking pass when she was in her 3rd timester and he gave her one. I was too shy to ask for one during my first pregnancy but might ask for one this pregnancy if it's kind of common. It really would've been nice to have one so that I don't have to walk so far (especially at my work parking lot). I used to run out of breath quickly and need to stop to take a breath while walking to/from my car.

Did any of you receive a temporary handicapped parking pass during your pregnancy? Just wondering if this was normal/common?
