@Mrs. Sketchbook: this doesn't answer the specific question because we aren't there yet - but - we have a babyganics foaming sanitizer that's safe for babies. I've used it on my LO's hands in an "emergency" situation before and she survived.

I use a wipe if it's just pee and will wash her hands if she touches the poop area. I try not to use hand sanitizer myself, so I don't want to use it on LO.

@MrsMccarthy: @Mrs. Lion: fair enough. I don't know where I sit on the e.coli vs alcohol poisoning scale, but I am at least gratified to know there is no real solution to the problem.

@Greentea: a wet washcloth is a great idea. Basically needs to be something that can be washed 100% because at least with my kid, it all goes in the pants. So no non-washable toys, and certainly not an electronic! Oh and ideally something they can't easily throw!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: LO and I were actually really struggling with this. She has a wild hand. I started giving her a wet washcloth to suck on otherwise a h20 waterwipe. That way her hands are occupied. Sometimes she needs one in each hand. If her hand gets near her diaper I wipe it pronto with a wipe asap. I always wash her hands at the end of the change with a wipe as well.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: Yeah, I would be more afraid of him eating hand sanitizer than eating poop (did I just say that? yep.) I would just use a wipe to get as much as you can.

Hand sanitizer is very drying and it's poisonous for babies. I would avoid it if you can and just do a thorough cleaning with a baby wipe or water and gentle baby soap.

@Mrs. Lion: definitely eventually hand wash, but in my house that is going to take at least five minutes because his room is not near a bathroom, and my kid is a thumb sucker so by the time I get there, the damage has already been done!

I don't like hand sanitizer generally but not sure of an alternative. Maybe move changing table to bathroom?

Wipes, but if it is really bad I would wash it with soap in the sink over using hand sanitizer. Once they are big enough to hold their heads up you would use the sink with soap and water to wash in a daycare setting. They have to have their hands washed after every diaper change whether their hands get dirty or not. True story.

I usually use a wipe - if its a poopy then wipe right away and then a good hand washing with soap afterwards!

Does your child put his or her pants in their pants during dipe changes? How do you avoid this? (Toys don't work for me, he will put those down there too!) Do you use hand sanitizer on your child if he sticks his hands in his pants during a poopy change? If not, what do you do?
