We are a blended family, and LO is only 4 months, but we plan to light candles and sing, and we are hosting friends for brisket and latkes. Her big Hanukkah present is a zoo membership!

@MrsLonghorn: I totally understand. I think you can get LO involved in crafts. When they were one I think I just drew holiday symbols and had them finger paint. As they get older the crafts can get more involved obviously. The other thing is that they can help with the cooking. I will let them turn on the food processor to cut potatoes, or mix the dough for sufganiyot. As they get older, I also try to keep in mind that we have a holiday almost every month, so it's ok to give some more importance and some less.

thanks for all the ideas!

@Baby Boy Mom: that sounds exactly like what we did growing up. I was just hoping to come up with a little something to add to it, without trying to make it a"Jewish Christmas".

We only do "traditional" activities- light candles every night, sing songs, spin the dreidel (you could get a bigger one for LO), read books/tell the story, and eat latkes. We do gifts on the first night and the rest are just for spending time together as a family. I do usually do one crafty thing the week before so that we have some decorations but other than that I think the highlight is really just lighting the candles.

@Miss Ariel: Gotcha - I did know that so I guess what I meant to say that as a non-Jewish person, I don't think it HAS to be minor, because it wasn't for my Jewish friends. Totally get what you are saying though and it makes sense!

@daniellemybelle: it turns of Judaism it actually is pretty minor. Technically it isn't actually a holiday, but a festival. Outside of the US, presents aren't actually associated with it. Instead 8 nights of presents really just started to keep up with Christmas.

I caved and bought a mensch on a bench! Yes I realize how ridiculous it is but I'm jealous of elves! Ha! I figure you can easily call it a hanukkah miracle that it moves around. Of course dd is only 1 so she'll have no idea what's going on, but hopefully when she's older?

Well also light candles and of course eat latkahs! I've also seen toy menorah sets that would be a lot of fun once she's older.

We make a card for my SIL and niece (our Jewish relatives)every year. Last year (when E was 17 months), we did a handprint menorah (two paint handprints with the thumbs overlapping). This year, we painted lollipop sticks and made a menorah on a card.

Menorah table decorations out of toilet roll middles are also fun, with tissue paper flames.

I'm not Jewish, but I don't think Hanukkah is very minor! At least, not if you don't want it to be. My Jewish friends got 8 presents so that was pretty awesome. :)

There is some cute stuff on Pinterest if you search "Hanukkah toddlers," like this activity: http://blog.melissaanddoug.com/2012/12/10/hanukkahcraftfortoddlersandolderkidstoo/

You could also do winter activities if you are just looking for holiday fun versus religious stuff, like snowman or snowflake crafts.

There's this post on the blog from Mrs. Confetti, and although most of the crafts are for older kids, I bet your LO would enjoy watching / "helping" / talking about it: http://www.hellobee.com/2014/12/15/18-hanukkah-craft-projects-for-kids/

She also posted these books which look cute: http://www.hellobee.com/2013/10/28/8-hanukkah-books-for-8-nights/

Happy Holidays! :)

I realize that Hanukkah is a very minor holiday, but since it falls in December and we don't celebrate Christmas, I would like to do something special each year.

Does anyone have a special family tradition or activity that would work well for a 1 year old? I've seen a bunch of cute ideas, but they all seem better for older kids.
