I have this book on hold at the library but I haven't gotten it yet. I have tried toddlerese half-heartedly but feel so stupid. Today I have committed 100% to it, and y'all, it works. It has been especially good with dealing with boob-mongering! All these damn snow days mean my daughter and I are together a lot more than usual and she keeps asking to nurse. I have been responding, "Nurse! Nurse! Nurse! You want to nurse!" really emphatically. She actually stops whining and looks at me and then I say, "But we're going to {other thing} right now." And she goes along with it!

@MrsB2012: I think I said "LO wants orange! LO wants orange!", then pause as he looks at me, then "LO wants orange and you can have it after we pay. Let's race to the eggs!" I believe he was then whimpering "orange, orange". So I told him "don't worry the oranges are going to be right here while we race to the eggs. Ready, set, go!". I know my kids can't resist a race though! :) and he is 2 now so can tolerate a little bit longer explanation.
ETA: I probably repeated myself a few more times- "orange after pay" after the initial sentence. And just as important is the delivery, so I got down to his level and faced him.

@Leah: Yea, I think the video above kind of says it all. Not sure why you'd need to spend any more money on it. I probably won't do this in public, unless it has insanely positive results and my child turns into a saint.

@blackbird: oh man! DH can't wait to use this approach, being super expressive like @Baby Boy Mom: suggests, in the grocery store! I will pretend that I don't know either of them.

It seems to have helped a lot of families. I will give it a read I think, or better yet, I'll get the DVD.

@Leah: Oh god it's the cavespeak thing! I have to admit, we tried it once because DH and I thought it was hilarious in a stupid way, and it freaking WORKED that night. She looked at us like, "yes, you get it". But we just...couldn't keep doing it. It felt ridiculous. But i appreciate the concept of not using too many words in general.....I do think we can over explain with kids, but....oye. I feel really stupid doing it LOL

I read it and didn't try the technique. My daughter had/has good verbal skills and I thought it was a little degrading and discouraged proper speech. It DID make me think a bit about words I used with her though (choosing words she understood).

It worked really well from about 14 months to 10 or 20 months, at which point we didn't really need it anymore. I liked it, though, and was glad to have the resource. We used what worked for our guy and skipped what didn't, as you do with any technique.
