No, I don't really question the lovey-dovey messages I see on FB. The few people I know who post things like that, really are that happy.

What REALLY weirds me out are the couples you thought were great together, and then they end up divorcing. I've known 4 couples like this in the past 4 years.
One was due to infidelity (which I would NEVER have imagined).
One was due to general dissatisfaction with life's direction (very surprised but looking back I understand now).
Two were completely out of the blue, the wife left the husband abruptly and severed all ties. It freaks me out.

I agree with what some others mentioned about that usually the couples that are the least happy are the ones who post the mushiest stuff. Totally true on my fb... I tag DH in pictures of DD but I usually don't talk about him on there.

I also have quite a few people that constantly air all of their dirty laundry only to post how much they love their S.O. the next day...

@Greentea: I mean just in the sense of fulfilling some socializing and sharing in a similar way. It was an aside, not related to the main topic, more to your comment about hating social media in general.

One of my cousins and his wife post super sappy things to each other all the time. He also posted a poem about his upcoming vasectomy. All those things seem weird to me, and I definitely think their relationship is no where near how lovey-dovey they portray it. Social media is definitely everyone's PR campaign though- most people don't highlight the bad.

I loathe social media and am not on it in any form. It is all a contrived projection. To me it is kind of evil- people project a perfect life and it does a little damage- because others think they need that standard and it just isn't reality. Yeah. I am totally a social media scrooge!

In my experience, the mushiest messages tend to be from people in struggling relationships- or who just over share EVERYTHING. They're often the same people who complain openly about their spouses all over social media as well.

@2littlepumpkins: I know people who openly gripe about their spouses on FB! When they are on Facebook. Then it turns into a he said she said every single time. And of course all the females always says the female is right and vice versa. Then the next day their spouse is the best ever. Annoying.

I know some people who post about all the things they are blessed with all the time including their spouses but I honestly think they are genuine. I don't think they pretend to be perfect but social media isn't the place for your dirty laundry.

I honestly can't think of anyone who posts "to" their SO except on their birthday, fathers/Mother's Day, etc!

I know people in tough relationships who post a lot of sappy stuff but it's more like they are trying to encourage each other to keep working at their marriage. Like a husband sends wife flowers, she posts her delight, people like the post and say what a great husband he is, hopefully that encourages him and makes him feel good, etc. So I think sometimes there's a purpose to such cases actions beyond faking a good relationship.

I have a friend on Facebook who CONSTANTLY posts inspirational quotes about marriage, being committed no matter what, never giving up on your spouse, etc. I know they had hard times in the past and there is no doubt in my mind that they are now. If you have to broadcast how you'll never give up on your marriage, it sounds seriously rocky. The lovey dovey posts are mixed in there too, but it's so clear she's trying to convince herself and everyone else that she's happy.

I like the analogy that social media is the highlight reel of someones life. I no longer use FB to keep in touch, my joke is that it makes me eye roll at people I actually love. I post photos of DH every once in awhile on IG with kind words because his love language is words of affirmation, so while other people certainly see it, it is really ment for him.

@JoJoGirl: Oh I don't even mean attaching a name to your husband I mean people being aware you're married at all and not a hot single on the prowl ;) . This one lady was trading "intimate photos" with this poor young guy in the group who thought she was single because we ALL did. She never mentioned her husband or three kids ever. Next thing he knew her husband was threatening him for breaking up their marriage and contacting his employer.

I honestly assume people who gush about their spouses on facebook constantly are in unstable relationships (my BIL is a good example of this, everyone knows they are MISERABLE but if you only saw their facebook feeds you'd think they were Fred and effing Ginger lol). Also if I'm 100% unaware you even have a spouse after interacting with you for a long while on social media I also give that the side eye- there have been a few ladies in a chat group I'm in who were married but were so quiet about it that they were in weird sexting relationships with some of the men in the group and the poor guys had no idea they were talking to married ladies until husbands started losing it.

Essentially there's a very fine balance you have to strike for me not to raise an eyebrow ;) haha

Yeah - overly mushy messages about each other all the time tends to make me think twice (or at least give side eye). It's one thing if it's their anniversary or something but randomly all the time seems off in a secure, happy relationship.
