So I have an 8 month old who recently has been screaming at naptime, so I figured, why not try this? At least for one of his 2 naps, it has worked great! And if he's crying when I leave, he quits after a minute too.

It makes so much sense when I think about his separation anxiety and the method you mentioned is what I employ when I leave him with nursery workers/grandparents, etc. Thanks so much!

I believe this works because it is similar to how we sleep trained! WE've always put DS in his room swiftly and positively, not making a big deal out of it but with a super happy attitude. We don't linger reading books, singing songs, etc. because I think this increases anxiety about going to bed and opens the door to kids trying to "control" bedtime, etc. It's worked pretty well for us so far and hopefully will set a good foundation for when he gets older and more clever, lol!

@BabyTsMom: ohhh dear! like I said above, the first few times you may have to go when he takes a breath! even if your hiding in the doorway and start talking loudly from there as you move towards him!

We reached a new level of amazingness with this technique tonight, I'm in Australia so he's already in bed! We put him in bed and he lay there awake and he went off to sleep within a couple of minute without crying once! not one cry!!! just like a grown adult hehe  seems so weird still, just a week and a bit ago he was taking around an hour to go to sleep.. with lots of crying and fussing   hurrah !!

@Tundra Daisy: i wanted to try this morning, but like I predicted, he didn't have any breaks in crying! maybe if i waited 5-10 minutes after he was crying, he may have taken a break... in which case it would pretty much be the same thing as a Ferber-style CIO, right? :P

@birdofafeather: @BabyBoecksMom:    Thanks!!!  :grin:

@tillma: It should do! did you try it? :silly:

@Little Misters Mom: That's great you found a way to combine the methods!!

@BabyTsMom: At first we kind of linger in the doorway where he cant see us and literally burst into action as soon as he starts to wane or take a breath! You'd be surprised how many chances you get - did you give it a go? :silly:

@Tundra Daisy: sounds intriguing! But what do you do if your baby doesn't stop crying, ever? Or takes a very short break to take a breath, but by the time.you get to him, he's started back up again? I'm just imagining how I think my LO would react!

Thanks for sharing this! As I mentioned in the other thread, we ended up starting a modified CIO yesterday. But tonight we incorporated the "happy" part from this. We laid him down, very cheerfully said "Night, night baby!" Then when we went to do our timed checks (as opposed to when he stopped crying) I made an effort to be very cheerful. We only had to do 3 checks at 5 minute intervals (so approx 15 minutes of crying) and haven't heard a peep in 40 minutes. Not sure if that is correlated to this being the second night, or the change in attitude but it certainly feels easier emotionally and I think he calmed much faster during checks.

I have to share this!!

Our baby is 12 weeks old and we've recently found the most amazing sleep method - I hesitate to call it training because it's not. Our little boy was addicted to the fit ball and it was the only way to put him to sleep. We tried to get him off it with the 'sleep sense' method and I also read the baby whisperer but decided it was a bit too complicated for us.

Then I came across what I can only describe as a happy and positive way to put baby to sleep. I read about it while bouncing him on the ball and desperately searching online for something that could help us!

I've put the link below but basically we put baby in his bed and smile at him and tell him what a good boy he is and that he's going to have a great sleep. Then walk out, he starts crying and then as soon as he takes a breath - usually within 30 seconds, one of us goes back in and tells him how amazing he is and what a good boy he is going to sleep. Then you say 'I'll be back in a minute' and leave the room. Repeat this process until baby is asleep!

It's important to keep the process upbeat with a positive voice, no whispering or creeping around! They seem to pick up on any anxiety, and the idea is to demonstrate to baby that going to sleep is a happy thing and not something to stress about.

I know it sounds completely unlikely that it would work but it really does!!!!! This was a baby who was addicted to the ball t the point where we even had to take it to my mum's house for dinner. This was a baby who took on average 1 hour to put to sleep each night and would start screaming as soon as he went near his bed. He also wouldn't nap in the day - yep it works for naps too!

Now he's asleep within 5 minutes of putting him down - not kidding. Often less time, the fastest he's nodded off now has been two minutes. He also sleeps for much longer stretches now as well, and if he wakes up and cries out he will often put himself back to sleep before we can even get to him. The best bit is that it's so enjoyable and positive to praise him and tell him how great he is that we actually love putting him to bed now.

I really urge anyone who's having trouble putting their bub to sleep to give this a go. When I first read about it I got off the ball, put him in bed and haven't looked back!!

Let me know if you have any questions about how we did it, and I would love to hear how it goes if you try it

Here is the link: http://theycallmemummy.com/2012/09/10/sleep-training/
I don't know why they mention 'baby whisperer' because it has nothing to do with the baby whisperer method lol :silly:

And here is a pic of him happily snoozing hehe
