@littleblessings: this made me giggle.

i check mine now and then but it is hard with the belly! laying flat on my back doesnt seem to be the best position because my ob really has to get. in. there to find it. babys head is low, and my cervix - its very posterior at the moment (39wks) :crying:

I was taught and told how to check myself for my second pregnancy since I had a lot of preterm labor with my first. It was pretty interesting going into the Drs office and telling him I was at a 2. Then the look on his face when he checked and I was correct: priceless!!! It was a good way to keep track of things. Hard contractions with no change after two hours is prolly dehydration for me.

Wow...you guys talk about it like it's not painful :happy:

I dread cervix checking and told my doCtor no thanks until she really need to determine how far I am, in order to offer an epidural.

It is definitely possible to do but not recommended if your water has broken because of the risk of infection!!

Yep because I dilate fast once labour is active. I'm scared of not making it to the hospital on time! The best way to do it is with clean hands or a latex glove and sit on the toilet with one foot propped up. Reach to the back where your spine is and feel for puckered lips. That's your cervix mouth. In the middle is where you will insert two fingers. If you can stick a fingertip in its 1 cm, a full finger loosely is 2 cm, 2 fingers tight is 3 cm and 2 fingers loose is 4 cm. If you are having contractions and bloody show and you are 4 cm then it's time to get to the hospital!

@winniebee: Interesting considering that a friend of ours was a medical student when she was pregnant. In her birth story blog entry, she mentions checking for dilation. According to her, she checked it herself.

@bao: I've sort of attempted it before, and couldn't reach it, but this morning I googled for ideas to help reach. If I still can't reach it, I'll give up. It's hard to do much around this big belly, lol.

I have a few times, even though my doctor said there is a risk of infection if done too much, but I was curious, I kept it to a minimum though. Most of the time I couldn't even reach it. The one time (out of the few) I did try, it felt like I could push a finger through. I'm not a dr so I have no idea ;)

I've had a very hands-off pregnancy, which is what I wanted and love, but I'm getting *really* curious to know how much dilation is going on down there. Especially since the past few days I just have felt weird.

I have no problem checking my cervix, from TTC, but for some reason I'm a little more eeked out about it...like I'll either be disappointed to see I'm not at all, or freaked out if I find that I'm way dilated! LOL

I know to wash my hands...I may even wear gloves for the extra protection. I've been reading online what to do and look for...

Anyone done this?
