There's some really sharp drop offs, and a strong undertow (and I used to lifeguard). It's really fun, but not the safest to wander outside the resort (although we still did during the day.) I second finding conch fritters. We had fun playing in the resort's water park, and also booked a really fun snorkeling trip. We've stayed in other resorts, too, but Atlantis was our favorite. Back in the day, Conch Fritters was the place to eat, but I've heard it's not that great anymore. In any case, I'd find actual conch fritters somewhere, since it's almost impossible (and usually illegal) to find fresh conch stateside. I'm sure things have changed since we've been, but just remember you'll be on island time and everything takes a long time. And don't even bother with the straw market.
