I changed insurance partway through my pregnancy. My original insurance plan covered 90% of my OB care for delivery so the OB office calculated my approximate cost for delievery and made me pay in monthly installments. My new insurance covered my OB 100%. After the birth, when everything was covered by insurance, I got back the money I had payed in earlier. It all worked out but they did make me wait until after delivery. If this is what the $500 was for and your new insurance will cover more than your previous insurance you should get that difference back. I think otherwise it is illegal because you'd be billed twice, once that your insurance pays and once where you pay for the same service.

@MamaG: I agree. If the $500 went to the OB directly, rather than to insurance as a deductible payment, it should still be on your "account" there. I'd call them up.

@matador84: I'd first check with your DH's policy to see about their enrollment window, changes like @Foodnerd81: mentioned, etc. Then, if you're eligible to switch over, talk to your policy provider/work/HR and determine what you have to do to drop that policy.

@anonysquire: It may be a total PITA, but maybe call up both insurances again and get confirmation about prenatal care. With the ACA, many policies have now been revised to cover prenatal/preventative care 100%, and even breast pumps (although you may have to fight with them re: electric pumps if you're WOH).

If he has a "new" plan, it would seem it is his open enrollment period which is an acceptable time to change policies.

The $500 you paid to your OB is a "deposit" and should not be impacted by a change in insurance.

The only thing that should impact your $500 deposit is leaving your OB for another provider. I didn't notice you mentioning this.

@matador84: you can usually only make changes during open enrollment or for major life status change events- marriage, baby, and loss of benefits (being fired or quitting usually). I don't think him just having a new plan would be enough for you to drop yours but its worth checking.

I was on my parents plan with no maternity coverage and starting today I think I'm now on my husbands plan and my parents plan but my husbands plan has maternity. But since pregnancy is a pre existing condition none of it is covered. So I can't really help. I don't understand insurance stuff at all!

@matador84: No I spoke with the billing woman in our ob office. She was able to answer tons of questions. Usually even if they send the billing to a facility they have one person on site who handles the transfer of things and usually has tons of great information

@autumnlove: had you already paid any money towards your ob fees or anything?

@junebugmama: so you talked to the person you currently held insurance with first prior to switching? what kind of questions did you ask? i was thinking about calling our benefits person tomorrow but not sure what to ask.

@Foodnerd81: that's what i am dreading, losing the money i've already paid out of pocket towards my deductible.

@indi: that is really good to know. i will ask at my next appointment. it would be totally different on this plan, different deductibles etc.

i'm even beginning to wonder if i can drop off my current provider and have DH add my son and I? i think there are certain stipulations and i'm not sure what they are now that i think about it.

I will have 3 insurances during this pregnancy. :-( I aged off of my mom's insurance during the 8th week, and then got on my work's plan since they had to take me no matter what (pregnancy being a preexisting condition, and all).

The ACA kicks in in January, coinciding with our work insurance renewal deadline. I think we'll be dropping the work policy totally, so I'll have to see if DH is getting on his work insurance or if there is an individual plan under the ACA that will be cheaper (thankfully there are no more preexisting conditions starting in January).

@matador84: I'd contact your OB's office re: the $500 paid for already, and also check in with your ins. provider and his (particularly his if you have to have a reason for joining, such as loss of coverage for you or if they have particular enrollment periods). In my state, they have what's called "no gain, no loss," so if you pay $1500 out of pocket through July and then switch to another policy in August with a $2000 deductible, you get credit for what you've already paid and only need to pay in $500 more.

I switched to DH's insurance after we got married. I was five months along when I had my first appointment with my new OB.

I did and it was a pain in the butt. Different experience, but I ended up paying for all the bloodwork at my first appointment, because it went towards my deductible, in Dec, then switched insurance in Jan and had to pay down the deductible again (which, now that I think about it, I would have had to do in Jan anyway). It was annoying but nothing I could really do about it.

I switched at 8 months, because DH took a new job. I actually spoke to the billing person in my office first. She was able to answer all of my questions. I didn't lose any money or have any extra fees because of the change.

My husband's company came out with their new insurance plans for the year and after reviewing it a little, I think his plan would be better than the plan I am currently on and carry DS. My major concern is the fact I have deposited $500 with my ob's office towards the fee I have to pay by my 30th week of pregnancy and I was wondering if I just lose that money or what.

Any other advice if you switched plans in the middle of pregnancy?
