Well, I have applied to 16 jobs over the past week or so. I haven't heard anything back from any of them but from what I've read that might be normal. Hoping to hear something from at least one or two in the next week or two....

@Ajsmommy: I used an accelerated masters program to switch into a new industry. A lot of mba and masters programs have great recruiting during the program so you graduate with your new job lined up

@dc yoga bee:  that's super encouraging! Thank you! I'm a probate/family attorney turned state attorney (what I do is still related to P & F work though) but of course divorce agreements are one big contract so I think I could spin it. Just need to make my moves.

@psw27: I’m a contracts lawyer turned construction lawyer. You could totally get into project management in this field if you have some remote experience with contracts. I was shocked how much construction all goes back to contracts and requirements and “managing the projects.”

What I did was spin my experience to the field I was trying to get into. I also was sure not to oversell myself and I was quick to say what I don’t know I’m willing to learn and am a fast learner. I tried to make sure I articulated why it was I was looking to switch industries.

@Bluebonnet: thanks for this! great advice.
@psw27: gahh I hate the over qualified aspect! I got that once while applying within my own company... and I understand it but sometimes people want a change and are willing to take a cut back to do so.
@MrsBucky: I'm going to be looking for anyone I know who might be able to help me...
@Eminthevalley: good advice, I might do this.... @autumnleaves: I'm going to be looking into any friends that might be able to get me a referral or at least get my name in the door...

I feel like the only way to get through these systems is to know someone where you want to work.
DH went from teaching to clinical research to nursing. He took an entry level job in clinical research - he had a referral and the company liked that he was a former teacher - sees the pluses to that but I am not sure he would have gotten to interview if he did not know anyone there. To go into nursing, he had to go back to school.

@Ajsmommy: for the wedding coordinator position - is there someone you can call at the company or can you drop off your resume and references there? I also would try to talk with people you know who coordinated weddings that you liked and see if you can help them out to get into the industry or see what recommendations they have.

You can do a cover letter in a two column format. First column is “job requirement” and second is “my experience.” This shows the person screening applications how your previous experiences fit what they’re looking for. Use the same language as the job description/announcement.

I switched from non profit to consulting, but it was fairly early in my career (3 years into working v. 20). For me it was for sure networking. I’d met and worked with a consultant that did some work for my non profit and she recommended me to her company. I’d say try to think or ways to network and meet people, because that gets your foot in the door more than anything.

I haven't but I totally understand. I'm a lawyer and I would like to get into either admissions for a college/law school or work in construction/real estate project management. Seems like no one wants a lawyer or thinks I'm overqualified while simultaneously under qualified. Good luck!

I've completely switched fields (without going back to school), but I don't want to post details here.

My general advice is try and talk to as many people as possible who have the type of job you are looking for. Ask them things like:
- how they got to where they are
- what they suggest you do find a similar job
- what you could do to improve your chances of finding a job
- do they know of any open positions

In my case, I found a job I was interested it, leveraged my network to find someone that worked for the company I was interested it. I articulated why I thought I'd be a good fit to my acquaintance who reached out to the hiring manager on my behalf, which landed me the first interview. I was very prepared walking into the interview and was able to give many examples about how my previous experience and skills would be applicable.

@Ajsmommy: not to be discouraging but at least where I am, jobs within the school department and court system are highly coveted (good hours, good benefits,
Etc...), so getting in is often a matter of who you know.

@lamariniere: actually my MIL suggested I do it on my own too, as a "wedding consultant". I'd love too, however, I need a steady salary for now and with 2 small kids I don't think I can work a ft job and fit in consulting too. But it's something I might aspire to.. put it on my wish list for where i'll be in 10 or 15 years!!

ETA: I also have NO idea where to start....

@Ajsmommy: I can see how your skills could transfer to wedding planning. Could you look at other wedding planning companies? Or...start your own side business? Start out small and either try to grow it for yourself or use the experience toward a salaried position?

@lamariniere: I do know what I want to do and I feel that my history more than qualifies me for these jobs. I actually am looking to take a step back and work as administrative help in the court system or school system. I've worked 20 years in with my current company and I'm ready to change.

So I don't plan to go to school or do any training. I'm more looking to "manipulate" my experience to fit.....

The "dream job" was actually a wedding coordinator... but I have extensive management experience, along with customer service and marketing experience. So although it's not in the wedding industry I've got it..... and I feel my skills could easily transfer.

It's frustrating to be dq'd without due cause....

I actually posted about this last year and got a lot of good replies. Do you know what you want to go in to? Or do you need to do training/school to move on first?

http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/have-you-ever-completely-changed-careers-or-gone-back-to-school

Since my post, I found a program, applied, and just found out a few days ago that I was accepted, and I’ll be starting a Master’s this fall!

Exactly what the title says. Have you ever changed jobs from one field to another?

If so how did you do it? How did you use your history in one field to land a job in another field??

I am needing to get out of my current field and I applied to my dream job Friday, I was immediately disqualified bc "Unfortunately, you are not the right fit for the position at this time". Such a line of crap. And so artificial....

**I wrote back and told them they were mistaken and what I lacked in experience I could easily learn so I requested they keep me in the running. I was then sent a list of questions to answer... but who knows if that was just a way to brush me off***

Anyway, I want to switch fields and I am looking for anyone who has done so successfully. Give me your ways/tips/strategies.

And don't leave out your old job and your new one.. for fun
