@anonysquire: Yah I'm great at abrupt changes... not so good at long term lifestyle change. If it weren't for kids, I'd be eating the same crap as ever haha!

@mrbee: That is a great goal then. I have had horrible eating habits my whole life, mostly overeating and then fasting for like 2 weeks straight so I would definately love to change that up before I have kids!

@anonysquire: Yah it's not fun yet. It's been rewarding though... my main goal (besides just general health and weight loss) is to model good behavior for the kids. We'll know if it's working or not soon!

@mrbee: No actually I'm just normal I think. But when I see in your post that you say "depressing", "Noooooooooooo", and "sadness" it just seems too sad for me to even try lol. All my family is super skinny and they eat just normal regular food in moderation. And my parents eat out probably 5-6 nights a week and eat a couple sees candies a day and cookies and milk every night and they are in awesome shape. But they do run 5 miles a day. Do you exercise? I just eat what I want (and it shows!) and I am always sick. So ya.... don't take diet advice from me :) I am really good at losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time though, again don't take advice from me.

@Arden: That reminds me, I made a cashew hummus once and it really did taste just like hummus! I think because most of the flavor comes from the tahini anyway.

My husband and I did it about a year and a half ago. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be, actually. I LOVE cheese and ate it on pretty much everything, but I really don't miss it. As soon as I cut out dairy I noticed my skin completely clear up and I haven't had a breakout since (until I got pregnant...).

It can't hurt to give it a try for a month and see if you notice a difference!

That being said, we haven't done it yet, but we have toyed around with the idea of re-introducing raw dairy on occasion. Not sure on that one yet, though.

Yep. I have a mild dairy allergy and cutting it out helped me get to my goal weight that I had never seen before. After going cold turkey for a few months, I could eat it occasionally and not have a reaction or add lbs.

Then I got pg and my only craving was huge glasses of 2% milk...lol. Now that the kids are here I'm thinking of cutting the dairy again.

I cut out all dairy because of LO and it's not terrible, but I agree with @Arden: the only thing that just isn't the same is cheese. I REALLY miss cheese. Yogurt, sour cream, milk, cream cheese, all of those things I could take or leave after 7 months of not eating them, cheese on the other hand I would take back in a second.

I will say that when I go back to being able to consume dairy I will not eat it in the way I used to, and I will likely limit my dairy intake to special occasions (dips and such at parties) and the occasional cheese topping on a meal. I plan to treat it like a dessert of sorts and only allow it in moderation.

I was vegan for a lot of years. There are pretty good alternatives for everything except cheese. I did make cashew-pimento cheese for a nacho-like sauce. It's just ok.
I do eat cheese now, but I try to stick with only flavorful cheeses like hard cheddar and parmesan though, since a little goes a long way.

I admire you for cutting out sugar and wheat though. I'm trying to cut out processed grains, but it's very tough.

I personally don't think the Paleo diet is very good for long-term weight loss or overall health, but that's just my take. Parts of it are fantastic, but certain parts worry me. I especially think that meat should be eaten sparingly and legumes should be eaten as part of a more rounded diet. I'm still figuring out what the perfect diet for me is, but I'm pretty sure Paleo isn't it.

I would say that if you've truly gone paleo (well, primal I guess if you're eating dairy) I don't think dairy would be hampering your weight loss. Most of the calories in dairy come from fat and from most of the reading I've done fat does not make you fat nor does it typically lead to weight gain when eating an ancestral diet (which, as I'm sure you know, tends to go heavy on fats such as avocados, coconut oil, butter, full-fat dairy etc.).

I would probably look at other areas of my diet first. Are you eating nuts? What about fruit? Or "paleo" baked goods made with almond or coconut flour? In my research and experience, these tend to be much bigger culprits than dairy in terms of hampering weight loss.

Not sure if you're a follower of Mark Sisson (I love almost everything he writes), but I always refer back to this article of his when I'm trying to remind myself of why fat can be a very good thing, despite what most mainstream diet advice may claim: https://www.marksdailyapple.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-fat-adapted/.

Well, one of my best friends is lactose intolerant (to the extreme) so she cannot have any dairy what-so-ever. It hasn't made her lose any weight...

Do you work out on a regular basis? I know it's clichéd but diet and exercise go hand in hand. My husband is a fitness trainer so I get to hear about this stuff all the time.

I've already cut out all soda, all processed sugar and all (wheat) bread. So depressing. Anyway it's paid off, and I've lost about a few pounds over the past month. Very slow going, but consistent with a lifestyle change.

That said, my weight loss has stalled and I know I'm eating things that I probably shouldn't. It pains me to even say this, but I am considering cutting out dairy. I already use hemp and soy milk in my coffee, so mostly I'm saying that I wouldn't eat cheese.

NOOOOOOoooo.............. sadness. I love cheese...
