@bluestriped bee: the trial transfer is when they practice transferring embryos into your uterus for measurement purposes. That way they can get the embryos in the right place the first time on transfer day. Also it helps the doctor familiarize himself with your cervix. You have to fill your bladder for the trial just like for the real thing.

@bluestriped bee: I think it is. Sorry I never updated the thread; the SHG wasn't so bad. The only reason I had any pain I think is because my cervix tends to be hard to get through. Otherwise it was just a little AF cramping.

@Leialou: I'm doing this for the diagnostic tests in preparation of my IVF cycle next month. What's a trial transfer?

I'm having a Saline Infused Sonogram (SIS) next week. Is that the same thing as a sonohysterogram?

I had the saline sonogram done too and it was fine. I actually didn't feel anything. I took antibiotics for like 3 days just to be safe. My Dr needed to make sure the fibroid I had wasn't in the way of anything.

I never had an HSG done but the saline sonogram wasn't bad for me at all. The most uncomfortable part was getting soaked on the bottom by the brown tincture they used to clean everything beforehand. I was warned it might hurt a little but it was alright. But I had a very experienced doctor perform it.

@TheReelDeal: @brownie: @justdarling: Thank you guys! The person with the instructions hasn't called me yet so I didn't have a ton of info other than that I need to take antibiotics.

@brownie: Did you feel like it was worse than the HSG? Do you know if they use a different kind of catheter? I did fine with the HSG but had a lot of trouble with the trial transfer and had to do it twice...they almost had to do a hysteroscopy to get a catheter in!

I had one done. It is like the HSG in that you can try that cycle and the procedure is very similar. What they do is inset a catheter into your uterus and then use that to get a saline solution into your uterus. They then insert a vaginal ultrasound in there too. so you will have a lot of things up your hoo-ha. Not to make you worry, but I found this procedure to be a lot more painful than the HSG. I did not have any problems with the HSG. This one hurt. Make sure to empty your bladder before you have it done (or ask first, I heard some doctors want it full, but if you can, have it empty). Also take some pain meds before - like Advil or Tylenol or something stronger if they will let you.

What got me through it is that it only took a few minutes and then you were done. This is not like the HSG where they can potentially make you turn from side to side or it takes longer for certain people. They are just trying to get a look at your uterus and it is pretty quick.

Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Oh it's like a trial transfer. We did this and have another scheduled next week. They had problems originally with mine (it was a student and new doctor) but I didn't have any problems.

I had a saline HSG, which sounds similar to the sonohysterogram. I also had a hysteroscopy. the procedure is fairly simple, it starts like a pelvic exam, the insert a catheter into your cervix, mild cramping when that is done, then they expand a ballon to keep their place and push the fluid the through. They put the ultrasound wand back to see if everything is clear. I only had cramping for a couple of hours after each procedure. Very light bleeding because of the cervix stuff and we were still able to try this cycle.

I found out that I need to do an SHG (not an HSG) this week and was wondering what others' experiences have been. Is it just like an HSG? Can you still try that cycle?
