We did! DS would poop and pee on the potty. We started at 6 months and he consistently would go on the potty by 9 months. Now, at 2.5, he's still not potty trained. He will go if we put him on the potty, but still won't tell us when he has to go.

We started with DD at 3 months. We put her on the potty when she woke up in the morning, when she woke up from naps, and before putting on a clean diaper. I never could figure out her "signals" if she had any... She would poop or pee on the potty if she had to go right then, if not then it was no big deal. She was very comfortable on the potty from the start and we did 3 day potty training at 15 months. It was easy to do well worth the extra effort.

@pmrlady: I haven't done this but honestly if your only concern is familiarity with the potty I don't think it's going to make much difference for all the effort it'll take (assuming you are at home with lo and doing this every day.) I'm not anti-EC or anything and maybe it's just not hearing tone but if you're just worried about the process it really isn't that bad.

My DH does elimination communication with DD and did it with DS too. It was never forced so if they peed or pooped in their diapers no biggie. But if we saw them giving signs that they were pooping he would hold them over the toilet as long as they weren't getting upset. I think that helped DS get used to the idea of going in the potty and later transitioning him to no diapers. I think it doesn't hurt to hold the baby over the toilet just to get them used to the idea of going in it.

We did that. Between diaper changes and other times. We weren't great about doing it at consistent times of day but they still did good. Both my daughters went through times where they'd have a strong preference for pooping on the potty, even as babies, and other times where they didn't want anything to do with it. So we'd stop putting them on the potty for a bit so they wouldnt be upset. Both were poop trained with the majority of pees on the potty by 18 months. We travel a lot so it's hard getting them completely out of diapers. I have my 19 month old in underwear when we're home and she's awake. So it's kind of a slow process but I like cutting down on diapers early. My older daughter nursed at night till 2 amd then substituted water so she wasn't completely out day and night till 2 and a half.

Hello bees,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with infant potty training when baby is able to sit unsupported.
I would like to start putting my 6 mo old on the potty once she can sit on her own just so she gets accustomed to it and it's not something totally foreign later on when she's a toddler.

My expectations are low, I'm not trying to get her to become potty trained in a sense of only going in the toilet when she needs to go. I know there is such a concept of "elimination communication" that is used in other parts of the world but I don't think it will work since my LO doesn't really give any signs of having to poop or pee. In fact she can sit in her own poopy diaper happy as a clown, and the only way we know that she went is by the smell lol. Sometimes she will grunt or make sounds but it's not consistent.

I am thinking of just putting her on the potty at scheduled times of the day, for example after every feeding and before naps, and if she happens to go in it, just give her lots of praise so she will gradually learn what it's used for. I want to do this so that when she is old enough to be aware of peeing and pooping, that she will already be familiar with the potty and maybe it will be an easier process to get her trained at that time.

Anyone done something similar with their infants and can offer any advice on whether it was worth it?

TIA
