My mom and FIL have totally bonded over genealogy, they just got their DNA samples read.

They have used Family Tree and Ancestry.com with cheek swabs and were satisfied with the results. We found that my very German husband is actually very Scandinavian.

My brother said something that had me cracking up- he told me that my mom ate a hamburger right before doing the cheek swab, and our DNA came back as part bovine. Of course I knew this was a joke- my mom never eats hamburgers ;)

@Mrs. Jacks: Have you decided which company you are going to use (if any)? My dad is adopted and knows nothing about his biological parents, so I have been looking into this also. Let me know what you find!

I gave a familyTreeDNA kit to my Dad since he doesn't know a lot about his bio dad's family. We didn't find out anything useful though. We are a ton of different nationalities though, so maybe that's why we didn't get good results. It shows you where people who have similar DNA are located right now, but that's kind of meaningless if people moved around. Like we had some Shared DNA in Ireland, but I don't think we are Irish.

I have done the national geographic one just for fun. It was kind of interesting because they tell you which genes they track and where it is most commonly found

I haven't and I don't know much about this.... but my DH has a genealogy service. He does a free consultation if you are interested. http://www.suncoastgenealogy.com/Services.aspx

(I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put this on here....sorry if I'm not and feel free to take it off! I'm just trying to be helpful. )

This is the company he went though. He really liked it and found it really helpful.

I've done a bunch of my family tree, but lose the trail on my mom's side in a peculiar place. Knowing my DNA make up might really help push me in a logical direction to find a missing link relative.

Have you done testing like 23 and me or the Nat Geo DNA testing to discover your genetic background? If so can you tell me which one you used and if you recommend it or if you have knowledge of one that's particularly good, will you share it?
