@Cherrybee: I would go see a dentist. We're you ever treated for thrush?? It really sounds like it to me. There are a couple other things it could be but without an exam it's hard to tell. Def see a dentist!!

Like anagram describes that could be one presentation of thrush, but also a burning red irritated tongue is a telltale thrush symptom as well

@BeachMama: I got oral thrush once, when I had dysentary in Vietnam for over two weeks. So yeah, my immune system was shot.

But it wasn't just my tongue....and I didn't have symptoms like CherryBees--were your symptoms similar to hers?

Mine was awful, but very clear that it was thrush. This is sooo gross, but it was like a yeast infection in my mouth. Like...white curds. On my tonsils, roof of my mouth, cheeks, inside lips, tongue. (shudder).

gross, I know

When I was wedding planning I started to have a lot of mouth/tongue pain. It went on for a few weeks before one day I couldn't take it and I went to Urgent Care. They diagnosed me with thrush and gave me medicine to swish in my mouth. My regular doctor couldn't believe I got thrush - apparently only people with HIV and compromised immune systems get it. But wedding planning was by far one of the most stressful times of my life, so I really believe the stress affected my immune system. Maybe you should get another opinion?

@Cherrybee: oh! And also, the last time I went to my dentist, she gave me a prescription mouthwash for gingivitis (gross, I know) and told me to use it for two weeks. But it was a huge bottle...so I asked if I toss it afterward and she said to keep it because it's great for mouth sores and sore throats.

So maybe you can get some of that?

@Cherrybee: Can you get a second opinion in the UK? Or see a specialist?

Or maybe as pps have suggested, see a dentist? Maybe they could discern if you have any type of infection.

@Cherrybee: I would totally get a second opinion! Doesn't sound like he had any real solutions for you and it's not like your tongue is something that is easily ignored (or should be!).

I have geographic tongue (and a b12 deficiency coincidentally) and it can sometimes hurt in the cracks and patches, although it's never made my tongue swollen.

I would think it's some kind of infection. Could you go to an ENT instead? I'm thinking they may have a better solution than to wait it out for three months while you're in pain.

I actually think it could be stress. I have had crazy little sores (like canker sores/ulcers) on my tongue before when I have been experiencing periods of high stress.

I hope you feel better soon!

@Cherrybee: How strange. I would get a second opinion, or perhaps see your dentist. In the mean time, maybe you can try to get some orthodontic wax for your teeth. They give it to you when you have braces so the metal doesn't scrape up the inside of your mouth.

I had oral thrush once and the inside of my mouth was super raw and itchy and sore. I stopped using mouthwash and it went away on its own.

So I got my blood test results back. My B12 is fine @Espion: @drjolene: . and so was everything else.

My cholesterol and fasting blood sugar was just above normal so he gave me "lifestyle advice" (eat less, exercise more), then said "do you understand? Come back in three months and we will repeat the tests". I reminded him that I had sought help for my tongue and he said "oh yes, I looked that up but I don't know what it is. Three months, okay?". My husband then piped up and asked if the tongue could be stress related (that's been his theory all along) and the doctor replied "yes, stress does funny things to you physically, it could be" and that was the end of that.

My tongue is a dreadful mess this morning. All the sides are ulcerated and its swollen so it keeps touching my teeth and hurting. The big patch in the middle (where the taste buds have gone) is no longer sore but its still red and shiny and the big crack down the centre is still there.

It can't just be stress, can it??? :bummed:

@Kemma: Yeah, I tried salt water and then progressed to corsodyl mouthwash but nothing has fixed it. It has gotten better and then worse again over and over but then flared up really badly last weekend. My teeth are fine, no bleeding when brushing or anything.

@drjolene: Can you have that with no other symptoms? I eat a ton of gluten but have no digestive issues to speak of.

B12 deficiency can, in fact, cause glossitis. If you happen to have B12 deficiency, I strongly recommend you push for Celiac disease testing.

@Pancakes: That's what I thought it was and why I didn't seek help sooner..... but then it got worse. I thought perhaps that thrush had infected it following Geographic Tongue....

My tongue hurts

It has been hurting for 10 weeks now - its swollen and rubs against my teeth causing repeated ulcers on the tip and sides. My taste buds appear to have disappeared, leaving a red, smooth patch in the middle and a huge crack has appeared down the middle. It hurts.

I finally went to the doctor yesterday. He ordered full blood tests (I have them tomorrow)..... but what on earth could it be? I thought perhaps oral thrush but the doctor didn't seem to think so. He seemed to be leaning towards a thyroid issue because I'm fat and exhausted - but I eat too much and have a child who hates sleep!!!!

Has anyone had anything similar? What was it?
