I paid around $800 to have a tub and tile surround done in our rental property. 2k seems kind of high.

@Anagram: I think the quote is so high because it can be time consuming and messy depending on the size of the tile. It’s something I would most likely try and do myself.

I've never looked into tile refinishing but I have looked into bathtub refinishing. Which is basically the same process.
From what I was told from a contractor friend, yeah you could do it yourself. But the guys who do it professionally REALLY know what they're doing, have perfected the method, have all the right tools, etc. Application is everything especially in a wet area, and if you don't do it perfectly your chance of it coming off is pretty high. So although I'm a DIY girl at heart, this is something I'd pass on.

We had contractors change the color of 2 bathrooms wall tile (gray and yellow to white). We originally planned to DIY it and I didnt like the way the test patch came out, looked like it was painted over. SO, we had them tile over the existing tile. If the walls behind it aren't sheetrock it can be done.

@Lindsay05: We already have the tile. =( So we'd have to remove the tile to choose all new tile, or it won't line up with the shower base. I've watched some tiling youtube videos--I feel like I could do it...but I've never gotten to attempt it.

I have never refinished tile but me and my husband installed all of our tile when we built our house. It’s messy but not that difficult. Helps to have an extra person to lay the grout and one person to clean it up.

Have any of you handy ladies refinished your own tile? Or have you redone your grout or caulking before?

I kind of want to try a DIY job changing the color of our tile in our stall shower. It's a small space and the tile is in good shape, so it seems like a good DIY experiment.

Has anyone done it? I got a quote and the price was ridiculous and I inquired about the process and it's exactly the same process as one of the $50 kits they sell at home depot. They quoted me $2k for a very small tiled area.
