That's a definitive. And I've heard MA is like NJ--hard to find jobs in education. You may have to substitute or take maternity leave replacements to get your foot in the door. I worked for my university, which significantly helped tuition costs. </p> <p>I was fortunate to find a job right away, but the market is tough. I know that elementary special ed jobs are very competitive here but high school learning support is less so. It varies a lot by market though, and it sounds like you've done your research. </p> <p>I've never regretted it once, even on the most terrible days at work. I also believe that having some experience outside the school system helps me deal with some of the bs present in my job. It's everywhere, and I don't have unrealistic expectations for my district. I absolutely have been considering the job perspectives following. The program will require student teaching! So I will need to be prepared for that as well. This is something I have applied and been accepted for and always ended up getting scared of and pulling away from. Basically, financially I would take a step backwards to teach.<br /> M</p> <p>I told DH I'm considering taking 1 class to get my feet wet and to consider if I even enjoy the schooling. This will take a lot of sacrifice but I've been job hopping the last several years and not been on love with my work for a long time. She had a BSc and was working at my company, went back to get her masters and came back to work with us. Then there were layoffs, she lost her job and has just now finished the two years to be a teacher. However, my situation is different because for me it will be a bachelor's degree - I never finished mine, working a full-time job with crazy hours just made it really difficult. But right now I'm a SAHM, I qualify for some grants, and even if I just go part-time I should be able to finish my degree by the time my youngest is starting pre-school. He completed a one year intensive Master's and certification program just this January. He is still looking for a permanent placement, but it was already a good decision for our family. He is so much happier!</p> <p>I say go for it! One thing to keep in mind if you're doing it part time: you will need to complete classroom observation hours, even before student teaching. However, I'm in a subject area that has limited job opportunities and I've lived in several different states the last couple years which has made finding a job challenging. If you wanted to teach something like math or science you'd probably have no problem getting a job. My brother teaches math and he had an offer before graduation. </p> <p>All the challenges of finding a job aside, I find it incredibly rewarding and I'm very passionate about my content area. The school where I work offers a program through SUNY for international educators which most international schools consider the equivalent of a US state credential. So although it's not a credential program it's working well for me. I have always dreamed of this profession but been too scared to pull the trigger after working in corporate America which a certain salary and amount of flexibility. Has anyone done this? I will have 2 small children this fall but I'm beginning to think long term for my family and feel like I need a career overhaul. I would be finishing a masters degree at a snails pace (my pace) but feel like this could give me the creative freedom but structured job I've been yearning for.</p> <p>Anyone done this before? </p>
