@jhd: so we had it done this afternoon. He ended up having his lip tie, tongue tie and four buccal ties lasered. I'm not going to lie, he was very afraid and I had to leave the building because I couldn't handle hearing him screaming. I am pretty sure he was not screaming in pain, he just was really scared. he was extremely distraught when they brought him back to us afterwards. He was shaking and sweating and clutched onto me and would not let go for anything. He calmed down pretty quickly, especially after we left. We just sat in the car for a little bit so he could settle himself and after just a few minutes he was laughing and playing with me. There was no blood or swelling or anything like that. Once we got home, we noticed immediately that he was able to open his mouth so much wider, his smile was bigger and he was moving his tongue A LOT! He ate great, played, nursed well and went to bed like normal. We just gave him one dose of Advil at about 3 and he didn't seem like he needed it before bed, but we have it ready in case. We've done the exercises twice and they aren't fun, but it's doable. The dr said 4x/day for 6 weeks. So far, he has handled it like a champ and just by the changes we've noticed so far, I'm good with our choice. I hope this helps you a bit and feel free to ask any questions!

@jhd: we are going tomorrow for DS's lip and tongue tie release. He is 16 months. They are using a laser and we will have to do the exercises that @Mrs. Lion: mentioned. We saw our pediatrician and an ENT, who both said that he had a tongue and lip tie but they "weren't bad". We took him to a pediatric dentist (he had to take medicine that can erode his tooth enamel, so I wanted to get it evaluated) and he mentioned it immediately and said they were severe. He was seriously impressed that we were able to EBF and that we are still nursing now. He said that it can affect their speech, Reflux and breathing issues (both of which he has), the need for braces later and even their face shape. I am NOT looking forward to it at all and have gone back and forth with this 100 times and I really hope it's the right choice.

Bumping this to see if anyone else has experience. Our speech therapist wants us to ask our pediatrician's opinion before seeing a pediatric ENT. LO is almost three and she thinks having a tongue tie clipped would improve his speech.

@Charm54: any update?

@Mamaof2: similar, but no. does it extend to the gum? (mine did, pretty severely--like a big lump between the front teeth, some sometimes around to the palate). can the child flare his/her lip to breastfeed (my son could not, i had pain for the duration of bfing but dealt with it)--I didn;t realize it till after.
and many many kids tear their frenulum in a fall (my son did... and the ER doc who noticed mentioned to try to keep it from reattaching so long as it was already cut!)

@Mamaof2: That's a frenulum. Everyone has one. It's only a lip tie if it causes issues with mobility (important for breastfeeding) and tooth growth/placement.

@Mamaof2: My thoughts exactly! Mine looks exactly like @rachiecakes, but I thought that was normal! My teeth are perfectly straight. I had a slight gap until I was about 10, and then it closed in by itself. I never had braces or a retainer or anything.

I had my frenulum cut with a laser a couple of years ago because it was causing gum recession. It hurt really bad after the numbing wore off for about 24 hours. I'm the scheme of things it's temporary, but if you do it, definitely give round the clock pain meds for the first 24 hours.

@Charm54: I had to use my finger to push her tongue up and down and then sweep across under her tongue several times a day with the goal of preventing it from healing back together. For a kid with aversions to having things in her mouth (the reason we were in feeding therapy and discovered the tie in the first place) this was not her favorite thing. But she will eat anything now, so there's a good chance it helped!

ETA : I breastfed for the first 4 months and still didn't know. She managed okay, but she was a snacker. I eventually gave up nursing because it was so difficult to handle her frequent nursing with a toddler too...but I found out later that the tongue tie probably was the cause of her struggles. :(

@Charm54: I had mine clipped at age 5, I still remember the surgery. I don't even remotely remember the recovery so it must not have been bad--my parents don't remember it either.

It saved me from braces. I had a retainer for a brief period at age 5.

@Charm54: I wrote this on the other post, but in case someone doesn't switch over: DD has a pretty major lip tie that the dentist showed us at her first appointment at age 2. We EBF with no latch or supply issues until she was 11 months and we had never noticed it before he pointed it out. I wanted to add that the dentist said it is not a concern at this point other than these do have a tendency to be easily injured in LOs and can bleed a lot, which can be scary but not really a major problem.

@hilsy85: a laser sounds less painful that what I was imagining ! I called my dentist this evening who said they generally don't recommend clipping until they're older, unless it's severe, but to see what the ENT has to say anyway. C has a dental checkup in a few weeks so he'll check her out then. Thx !

@Mrs. Lion: what kind of exercises did you have to do?

@Crisark: yeah that's what I'm thinking ...dd2 will need it clipped for sure due her feeding issues, but if dd1 has had no issues so far, why put her through that?

@rachiecakes: thank you! That link was super helpful. Hopefully we can just leave dd1's be too.

I feel bad because I bottle feed - my Dr said if I had BFed we would have caught dd2's ties earlier (he didn't say it in a judgy way, just a matter of fact way, but I still feel guilty). She was a VERY fussy newborn, choked when she drank her bottle, super gassy...even though she's happier now, she still can't get a good suction on a bottle or soother...all likely due to the ties and could have been easily fixed a lot earlier

I didn't know that clipping a lip or tongue tie was even a thing until my best friend was going through this with her son when he was born (he's 10 months younger than my DS).
I looked at J - yep, he had both, lip and tongue ties. And then I looked at myself - YEP, I do, too.
I can tell you that I've never had eating issues (I was nursed and my mother told me she never had any issues and I nursed for over a year) nor have I had any kind of braces, spaces or anything like that either.

I can't speak for having a child done but I myself had a tongue tie clipped at 12years old and I can say it was hard on me. I can remember exactly what happened and I'm 33 now. I'm positive the procedure is way better now a days but for me I'd kinda wished they'd left it alone.

My oldest daughter also has a tongue tie issue and is nearly 13years old and I've not had it snipped and her teeth/speech and eating habits have all been fine since birth.

We did a tongue tie clip at the same time my daughter had her ear tubes placed. She was almost 10 months. It was no big deal at all! She didn't love the exercises I had to do after, but it wasn't traumatic.

All the info I have read and when I talked to pediatric dentists, they all say that clipping a lip tie is NOT recommended for tooth spacing issues, because you don't know how the adult teeth will come in and how the jaw will change. If necessary, it can be done when the child is older and the adult front teeth are in, and I think it's done with a laser and is very fast (but I imagine a bit painful after).

I've just discovered my dd2 (6 months) has a pretty severe lip and tongue tie that is interfering with her ability to eat solids so we will need to get it clipped.

I had my older DD (2.5) with me at the initial appointment today, so my dr took a look at her also and noticed that she has a lip tie that may affect how her teeth grow in. He couldn't tell about her tongue (she was being all toddler like and he couldn't get a good look). He referred both girls to the ENT.

I feel awful about getting Dd2's clipped (in retrospect there were SO many warning signs, since she was a newborn and I feel so guilty that I didn't put 2 and 2 together) but I feel in some way even worse for Dd1. She will be old enough to understand what is happening and I feel like it will be more traumatizing for her.

I'm rambling now. But has anyone had a toddler or older child clipped? Was it as awful as I am imagining ?
