@Dynamite: I was going to say the same thing. Sleep apnea will remain even with weight loss. Sleep studies are no big deal. Honestly take the night away from the kids and relax lol

@Ajsmommy: Excuse me while I rant.

I've had a sleep study and I've been on cpap for about 6 months. I should have been on cpap a long time ago. One of my parents does sleep studies for a living. My other parent comes from a huge family and him and his 8 living siblings are on cpap for OSA. I'm really familiar with cpap and OSA.

First of all, you have OSA no matter what you weigh. Extra weight can exacerbate symptoms, but losing weight will not cure OSA. If you have untreated OSA, you will continue to damage your organs as they starve for oxygen. You are also more likely to have the willpower to make better food choices and exercise more if you are rested.

Second, women's symptoms present differently than men's. Many women will only show apneas or RERA's during REM sleep, and may not meet the threshold for diagnosis unless your doctor is informed and specifically looking for it. That's why so many women magically "develop" sleep apnea after menopause. Once your hormone levels drop, your symptoms are more like men's symptoms.

Your doctor gave you bad advice. Untreated OSA leads to heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, just to name a few. The sooner you get treatment, the better.

Cpap is kind of annoying at first, but when I wear mine, I don't have trouble staying awake while driving and my mind is so clear and sharp it's unreal.

Thanks all... so I had my appt and my dr is the best. She actually told me to hold off for a year and see if i drop any weight. I recently started back up trying to work out/jog 2-3 times a week and she said if I stay committed to that i'd lose weight and if i lost 5-15 lbs that would potentially help my sleep. I really appreciate her bc instead of just giving me the referral she helped me see that my fitness can really help and it's helping me recommit. I'd been good in july/august and sept but fell off in oct and nov.. i had lost 7 lbs but have been hoovering around the 5 lb down mark bc i haven't worked out in weeks......soooo after talking to her i am going to recommit myself and my goal will be 10-15 lbs down by next year!!

@KT326: yes, I would imagine the upper jaw is more complicated. I hope your recovery goes well! ❤️ My youngest had surgery in April to repair a cleft palate and he was on a soft foods diet for 6 weeks or so. He was dying for something crunchy by the end and stole a treat from our dog 😂😂 I hope things go as smoothly as possible for you!!

@jhd: ask away! I’m still recovering so I may not have all the answers. I just had surgery last week. So far it hasn’t been that bad. The hardest part has been being wired shut. My surgeon wires shut for 10 days post op so I’m on a completely liquid diet. I’ve heard lower jaw surgery is an easier recovery because it doesn’t do anything around the sinuses.

@KT326: Was it a tough recovery? I worry sometimes that my boys will one day need another jaw surgery and it scares me! They both had surgery as newborns. I have never met anyone who has had any kind of jaw surgery so please excuse my questions!!

@jhd: I had upper jaw surgery to move my upper jaw forward. It was to fix an underbite and cross bite.

@KT326: can I ask what kind of jaw surgery you had? I totally understand if you don’t want to share. I’m just curious because both of my boys had jaw surgery due to Pierre Robin sequence. The younger one had a sleep study done as part of his surgery preps.

@Ajsmommy: My son has had two and so I have had the opportunity to watch! It probably won’t be the best night sleep ever, but I think as long as you are able to sleep for a few hours they can get the information they need. Definitely ask for the referral if you think you need it and ask lots of questions. The people we worked with were so nice and helpful.

My husband uses a CPAP. He's had probably 3 studies in the nearly 8 years we've been together. (I told him a month into dating it wasn't going to work if he didn't fix the snoring). He says they're not bad, it's no worse sleep than what he was already getting anyways.

The first nights he used his CPAP was life changing according to him. He was waking up for his alarm on time, feeling rested for the first time in years. (He has Central apnea instead of obstructive apnea, if that matters)

My husband has had a few (first one 10ish years ago and he goes for follow-ups every few years) and he says it's pretty straightforward. Only downside is having to leave in the morning looking like a just-woken-up mess lol. He's been sleeping with a C-Pap for years now and says it's made a huge difference. Honestly, I need to go and get one done as well and my only hesitation has been having to get a C-PAP cuz I hate being dependent on things like that and with a little kid I'm kind of used to being a light sleeper who can wake up at any sound (even though my sleep is shit as a result).

I had a sleep study done as prep for my jaw surgery. It was honestly the best night sleep I’ve had in years! I had a few symptoms of possibly having sleep apnea but it’s just a standard test before the type of surgery I had.

I checked in at 8:45pm, the tech took me to a room and it took about 45 minutes to get completely hooked up to everything. I fell asleep pretty quickly but if I had wanted to I could read or watch tv until I was tired. I don’t think I woke up at all, I had moved around in my sleep but the wires all stayed in place.

When I woke up the tech helped me get out of bed and unhooked everything. Then I had to fill out a survey regarding how I slept, whether I had any dreams, etc.

It was a super easy process! The room was decorated nicely, the bed was comfortable and I was able to bring my own pillow.

Tell me all the things. please.

I am going in for my annual check up tomorrow and I am going to be asking for a referral for a sleep study bc my DH and everyone who has slept near me is pretty sure I have sleep apnea. I am sick of being dog tired all the time and I also don't want to die in my sleep sooooo……

But I am nervous.. and I'm wondering what to expect? how bad is it really? Will I even be able to sleep??? Have any of you done one and what was it like.

Also, if you have a cpap machine or something does it really work and is it easy to use or will it bug me and be a waste....??
