Yep. All at once. Got mine out after 18. I am a big baby when it comes to pain and procedures like that and I was cool. I was given a prescription for Motrin and some stronger painkiller like Percocet or something. I never used the Percocet and only had Motrin the first day. Just be very careful not swish mouthwash or anything too hard so that the holes can heal up nicely. I had 3 of them removed -- I think 2 were impacted. It ended up being a really easy procedure.

P.S. I ate some blended chicken, potatoes and broccoli and ate it like a pureed soup afterwards. It tasted pretty good. :P

I am so sorry  I def think maybe just take the plunge and do it all at once and just take a few days to recover and make sure someone's there to pamper you and do whatever you need them to!

I still haven't gotten any of them taken out... Every year I go to the dentist I nervously ask if everything still looks okay.

I would do all 4 at once, and have someone lined up to help the first day or two.

I got all 4 of mine out in college. 3 of mine were impacted. The overall recovery wasn't bad at all, but the first two days were rough. The anesthesia and meds made me vomit, and I was just totally out of it. I couldn't take care of myself, much less a toddler. Good luck! You'll do fine!

Yep, had all 4 of mine out sometime in my early 20s. Just did novocaine during the procedure. Had some pain/swelling for the first day or two after but nothing bad enough to take the Rx drugs. I actually didn't think it was unpleasant at all. However, I know others who had a rough go of it.

Sounds like the plan to do it on a Friday when you have childcare help and a weekend to recover is the best bet!

I'm in the same boat, they have never bothered me but my dentist keeps telling me to do it before I'm 30...which is next year. BUT we are trying for baby #2 so it's just going to have to wait a little longer. I keep putting it off because I'm so dreading having it done! I'll have them surgically removed because 2 of them will have to be dug out.

Yes, I had all 4 removed while I was in college. They were impacted and the roots were growing around the nerves, so they had to be removed by breaking the teeth and pulling out the smaller pieces.

My oral surgeon said I healed like I never had surgery.

@MamaMoose: lol!

@Weagle: That sounds pretty awesome (to me at least!), but also pretty scary, too (not being able to anticipate how meds will affect you). I have always had a difficult time getting proper doses for pain meds . . . I have a really high pain tolerance, but it does take a higher dose of most meds for me to get relief.

@MsLipGloss: Waking up during surgery is one of my worst nightmares! I'm not sure why meds tend to work really well for me. I also once slept 18 hours straight after a half dose of cough syrup containing codeine.

I had all 4 of mine removed + a bone graph at the same time and it wasn't bad at all! I felt like crap that day because of the anesthesia, so I wouldn't have been able to watch a kid that day. Over the next few days my mouth was just sore, but I could eat and function just fine! I think it depends on how you handle pain medicine too. If DH takes one percocet, he's asses out on the couch whereas I would need 2-3x that to knock me out. So I think that has a lot to do with how you will be able to get around!

@Weagle: I have the opposite problem . . . I burn through the meds much faster than expected (based on body weight). I *woke up* after the second WT had been removed and had to signal to the oral surgeon that I could feel what he was doing (I reached up and grabbed his wrist).

I had all 4 removed when I was 25; 3 of the 4 were impacted. I recovered in a day or two, but I had an allergic reaction to the prescribed pain meds, so I think that made my recovery worse than what it otherwise would have been. I would probably plan to have help on had for 4-5 days . . . if you need less, great! But if you need the help, then you're all set.

DH still has his and said they are starting to hurt, so I think he is going to end up needing them out too.

I got all 4 taken out when I was 21 - the pain wasn't too bad for me, I just wanted to sleep a lot. But my face was really swollen for a couple days.
DH just had his taken out 2 years ago (he was 33), and was totally fine. I had to make him rest and use ice packs!

I would do all 4 at the same time, and maybe see if someone can come help out with your LO so you can rest?

@CupQuakeWalk: I got all four out in October. I don't mean to scare you, but it was worse than childbirth. I'm old, 33. They were impacted. One came out of the gums when I had J and got infected almost a year later, so it was advised to get them all out.
I'm glad they all were out at once, I will never worry about them ever again. But it was harder than I expected. Get someone to help you for at least a week. The first two days aren't terrible but the swelling/pain gets worse on days 3 & 4. My dentist told me this when I was all loopy from general anesthesia, my brother reminded me, I didn't believe him and called the doctor back!
I called my mom begging for help (she couldn't). I couldn't eat solid food for almost a month (lost almost 10 pounds though!). Soup, pastina, yogurt, puréed squash, turnips, potatoes, soup, I'd stock up on all that.
And please get help with your son, it's so hard. I let J play with the iPad and watch Happy Gilmore that week and now he's hooked.
Get them all out, get the good painkillers, never worry about them again :) good luck! xoxo

@CupQuakeWalk: I had my removed when I was 23. It was FINE--no side affects at all. I had it done on Friday and was back at work on Monday. I *did* keep the ice packs on my face for about 24 hours constantly and I think that helped...I had no swelling.

Definitely arrange for your mom (or someone) to come take care of your LO if you can. Then you can just lay with ice packs on your face and sleep of the anesthesia.

What @Dandelion: said! I had mine out in college, and I was put under, so I was super groggy (I'm also pretty sensitive to medication, so that's part of it.

DH just had his out a couple of years ago (he was 26) at our local dental school because it was cheap. A student did it, and I'll spare you the details, but even though the actual procedure was rough (and he was awake!) he recovered really well. They gave him really strong painkillers, but he only took them for about 24 hours. Granted...he's way tougher than I am (I would have kept taking them, I think!).

All that to say, you'll be okay! Good luck. :)

I had all four out in college, under general anesthesia and I'm not gonna lie, it sucked. I'd definitely arrange for two days of help with child care. My biggest problems were a bad reaction to the anesthesia (vomiting) and also to the Percocet they gave me (depression) so it was a perfect storm and I don't think that happens to many people!

I did mine 2 at a time and recovery was easy both times. I did the 2nd set RIGHT after I had DD1. I think DH took that day off, but then I was fine the next day to take care of a newborn! But who knows, maybe it was horrible (like the newborn phase) and I have just blocked it out of my memory. Just kidding! I think I was fine, but I do have a high pain tolerance.

I had all four done a couple years ago (when I was much older than 18!). I was like you - waited until I was in a ton of pain and my dentist said yeah, these need to come out ASAP. I recommend being put out instead of just getting laughing gas, if they give you a choice. My BIL said being awake during his removal was really awful. I think I had mine out on a Friday and was back at work just fine on Monday. Just follow all the after care instructions so you don't get dry sockets!

I had 11 teeth pulled at once including wisdom when I was 20 (i had a horrible bike accident at 11 that included reinserting some permanent teeth that were knocked out and then havng them repulled plus some due to space issues with braces) and was pretty groggy from GA the first day but otherwise recovered really well. I would arrange at least 1 full day of child care so you can rest.

I'd arrange two days of care afterwards if possible. But the day of and next day are worst...talking will be tough for a couple. But it's not that bad in general.

@Mrs. Pen: My wisdom teeth came out when I was pregnant 2 years ago. My dentist told me not to worry about them until they started to 1). hurt or 2.) push on my teeth. They started pushing on my teeth awhile ago, but now they hurt aswell. Finally it is giving me the push to just get them out. I am scared *hitless:) And I just turned 25 this year.

I had all four taken out when I was 25. I was sick for over a week and would have done 2 if I were to do it again, but who knows... May have had the same experience twice. I was knocked out so maybe that's why....

I also couldn't take Vicodin.. It made me feel sick!

Good luck!

@CupQuakeWalk: It's somewhat routine... I know some offices don't bother, and others do. The idea is to prevent infection, since our mouths can harbor a lot of bacteria. The kind of antibiotic I was given was way too strong, though.

After going through all of that, I always encourage friends to take a probiotic (or at least eat a lot of yogurt!) with their antibiotics. That could help with the UTI issue, too (If you do have to take one!).
