@LCTBQE: I totally get it. I had no pain from my veins. I did my procedures strictly for vanity reasons. As for me, I took a new job this summer and don’t have maternity leave benefits until I’ve been there a year so DH wanted to take a break from trying (we had only tried a couple of cycles after my D&C in December of last year). We’re going to try starting this month for a few cycles and see what happens. I’m turning 39 in a few weeks. Eek! How did that happen?!?

@LCTBQE: I had the injections as well a few weeks later. Those were surprisingly more painful than I expected but they were effective. One of my legs actually did have another vein (two kids later) pop up but it isn't nearly as bad as the ones I had before my kids. My doctor recommended waiting until I was done having kids but I was maybe 27 at the time and I didn't want to feel so self-conscious for the next decade plus. I may have the vein looked at again eventually... still trying to work out whether kid #3 is in the cards for us.

I have a few spider veins but not many. My issue was a big bulging vein on each leg.

Sorry for the late reply, my mom came to town and it's been busy--
@pinkb: @Shantuck: it's good to hear you had/know people who had good experiences--I'm a little nervous about it. I'm doing the same thing, the fish hook procedure (shudder) and just one vein, but really bad, long ones, on each leg, performed a week apart from one another. Insurance will cover the varicose veins and then I'll go next month to get the spider vein patches done with saline injections which is out of pocket.

@MamaBear87: aw, that's so sad for your great aunt :bummed: I wonder what the circumstances were because the vascular surgeon also told me what @Shantuck: said, that varicose veins are dysfunctional and useless--the reason they bulge out like that, if I understand it correctly, is that the valves the pump the blood back up to the heart are broken, causing the blood to pool.

@Shantuck: so you didn't have any new ones crop up during your pregnancies? that's great! did you never have a problem with spider veins?

@Shantuck: it could be something different. I just know I had a great aunt that was unable to have bypass surgery because she had had vein removal. I don't know alot about it, just that it was really heartbreaking for them

I had a microphlebectomy (an outpatient procedure where they fish your veins out with a crochet hook and then remove them). This was before kids but I was able to go back to the office the next day. I was super sore for a few days.

I’m not sure what @MamaBear87 said is right. These veins are nonfunctional because the blood is pooling and cannot pass through. I was told the veins would only worsen with age. Mine were removed maybe 11 years ago and I have no regrets.

I friend of mine had hers done, both legs had huge varicose veins, just 1 on each leg. She is in fantastic shape otherwise. She didn't have any issues just had to wear the compression stocking for I think 2 weeks. And my dad just had one 1 leg done last month with lasers. He had some pain during the procedure and had to go several days in a row. Again had to wear a compression stocking for a while after. But he is really happy with it so far.
I have had issues with my leg veins (spider and varicose) in all of my pregnancies so once I have this last baby#3, I will be getting my legs done.

Good Luck!

Just be aware that often the veins they take are ones they need to use in the event you need a heart bypass. If they are causing you pain and issues it might be worth it but if it merely a cosmetic thing I would be sure and check with your surgeon if that would be an issue down the road

During pregnancy #1, I got one varicose vein on my left knee that never really went away. During pregnancy #2, that vein got 10 times worse, I got another one on the right leg, and I had huge purple patches of spider veins that look like palm-sized bruises--I looked like I was hit by a bus and it was super painful. The bruising veins went down somewhat PP, but the varicose ones stayed--I saw a vascular surgeon and I'm scheduled to have my left leg done at the end of the month, right leg a week after that.

Just wondering if anyone else here has had vein surgery of any kind and could share their experience, or LMK if there's anything I should be aware of before going in.
