I've never heard of professional childproofers, but I would totally get the plexiglass done. I went to school with a girl who fell down the stairs when she was little and she ended up losing one of her fingers because it caught on the railing ..

@banana: yes, we felt like it was worth it for the plexiglass. we have dangerous wooden stairs, too. he came in and did a full evaluation of the house but all we did were gates at our stairs and the plexiglass. there was no pressure to do the other stuff.

@banana: yes, i hired one! we put plexiglass on our stairs but i can't remember how much it was as we did it over a year ago. he cut it all to fit so we didn't think that we could do it ourselves. we feel like it was worth the expense but it certainly was not $3k!

@regberadaisy: He's kinda handy but not THAT handy. I wish he was though. Then I wouldn't have to deal with this stupid stairs issue!

@eeh: Sigh. That's what I was afraid would happen. That they would come in and point out 50 things that are dangerous and life-threatening and must be fixed asap. And knowing me, I would probably agree to all of them! Yikes.

All of these comments are really helpful! I'm gonna check out the contractor thing first and see where that leads me.

I would probably try to find a contractor to fix the issue the right way if the plexiglass is that complicated. Plus, you have to remember that the babyproofing company makes money off your fear so they're going to point of every.single.little.thing and take it to the extreme because the more they scare you, the more money you spend, the more money they make. Sometimes with companies like that you have to listen to their advice and then wait awhile to act so you aren't acting out of fear and emotion and instead thinking practically. (not saying that you're acting irrationally AT ALL! Just reminding you of how those companies work.)

Is your husband handy?
In the scenario you talked about I would add carpet to the stairs or tread protectors (can't think of the exact name right now). As for the railing you can always go to Lowes and buy new balusters and replace your railing yourself.

I guess if your husband is handy I don't see the point of hiring a "childproofer" to come in.

@venice4504: Good point! Yes, they are licensed so I would feel ok with them coming and adding plexiglass to the stairs. We looked at changing the entire rail and the quotes we got were in the $3k+ range! But maybe we should look at some more contractors before we move forward with anything. These stairs are stressing me out!!

So does the company come licensed and bonded? I would think that any company that is making something structurally different would have to carry insurance in the case that something that they did resulted in something happening. It's not something that I would be at all comfortable with and personally I would rather hire a contractor to just fix the stair rail/issue to code.

@eeh: The childproofing company recommended exactly what you said...plexiglass. But the rail bars climb up our stairs so it'll be tough for me to get the plexiglass cut exactly to the same diagonal dimensions as the stairs (if that makes sense). I tried looking at doing it myself but it seemed way too complicated!

@anbanan15: I didn't know about it either until a friend recently mentioned it in passing. The one I'm looking at is called Booboobusters. http://www.booboobusters.com/

I also recently saw them on TV childproofing a soap opera actress's home recently and really got my attention. Unfortunately I don't personally know anyone close to me who used a professional childproofer so I'm looking for any insight from someone who has.

Can you screw plexiglass to your stair case to provide the safety without having to completely change the look of your stairs?

I didn't even know there was such a thing! But I say if your not comfortable doing it yourself or don't have the means (in the case of your stairs) hiring a pro who knows their stuff when LO's safety is concerned is warranted. Hopefully they will have a good solution and won't just suggest replacing the railing so it's to code (side note: my brother did get his head stuck in a railing back in the day. My parents took it out and put a half wall instead but recently redid that room and put the railing back, to code lol).

No, but I don't have anything like stairs, a pool, etc. so I'm not too worried about it. I think it's a great idea though- then you won't have to worry about it!

My home has these stairs that are a nightmare for any parent. They're super steep, hardwood so they're slippery, and the hand rails are not to code (so there is a large gap between the bars). I was thinking about hiring a professional childproofing company to come and childproof the stairs (and maybe a few other things around the house).

Does anyone have any experience with a professional childproofing company?
