@mediagirl: if you are trying to shave a fade up the back start at the nap of his neck with a 3 or 4 and do about an inch up. Then go up a size and do another inch up. I can get about three sizes in and then I switch to cutting with scissors at the top.

After this post, I ordered some scissors and cut both my husband and my daughter's hair. And in the process, saved us a bunch of $. Next step...figuring out how to use the clippers to shave a fade into my husband's hair....

@maddyz: @josina: You guys remind me of the time DS refused to sit for a hair cut so I'd trim it while he was napping

I practiced on my husband first and he told me a number that I matched to the guard and I did his whole head that length, then made it shorter on the sides. BUT it was way too short. I don't know if that was really the number he asked for at the salon or if my guards were way off, but he looked like he was headed to the marines.

I've been working on scissors, but my son is afraid of them (but not the clippers for some reason) and eventually I'll get that figured out.

In order to save money and time, I learned how to cut his hair! I started by watching YouTube videos, but I still sucked at it, so the first two cuts were pretty awful. What really helped was watching my brother (who’s been cutting his own hair for 20 years) do it. He didn’t even need to say anything. Just watching him do it up-close was really all I needed to figure out what I was doing wrong. I’ve been cutting DH’a hair now for 6 years! And I started cutting DS’s hair too! So so great to be able to do it ourselves.

I think it’d be a little uncool to ask a hair stylist to *teach* you, but if you have a hairstylist you’re pretty comfortable with, asking to observe should probably be super helpful and not at all uncool.

I tried DS's last night... I've been doing DH's for awhile and it's all with the clippers so his is pretty easy. I like DS's hair longer on top so last night did the side's with the clippers and scissor-cut the top after watching a couple you tube videos. The hardest for me is getting it straight at the top, and fading it. Today we just did a faux-hawk so no one can tell where my bad lines are, lol.
I've been following him around with a scissors to get any spots I missed. Work in progress!

I watched a bunch of videos on line about cutting little boys hair. I am getting better and better at it. I now cut DH's hair and both boys. DH and DS1 gets the sides buzzed and the top done with scissors. It's not perfect, but passible. DS1 also flitches a lot so it's hard to cut well. DS2 has super fine (but somehow thick) hair that is so so so so striaght, you can see every little cut. He has a little bowl cut going on right now becaue all he will let me do is trim the edges..... I dont know what I will do with his hair.

I cut DS's hair too. Haven't thought about classes because I felt it will be the same as youtube. I look at pics and watch youtube videos to try to mimick the look. My problem is my son is always moving and figeting, and we never have enough time (it was always after dinner / before bath and my sudden urge of ok we have 10 minutes let's get it done now lol) so the look is never perfect. It bothers me but not him, he thinks it is great but he's just 6 lol. I've been wondering when do I need to transition him to a barber.

My problem is when I watch youtube videos they always use super short settings for the clippers for the side and back and the look is great, but I am always scared as I feel like I am shaving his head! Hah! so it seldom has that look I wanted. The end result is usually decent, but not stylish.

Just go for it and practice. Watch some youtube videos. I cut my husbands hair and will probably be cutting LOs hair. My husband was super hesitant at first, but I was like... it's the same price as clippers, so it's super cheap, AND since it's short it grows out so fast no one would notice. You get a better and better feel for it each time and now I can do his hair cut in like 5-10 minutes. The comb was definitely the key for me to help fade out spots that I didn't fade perfectly with the clippers.

My DH learned how to do DS's hair by watching youtube. I still won't do my son's hair and now we live in a place where haircuts are super cheap, so we just go to the local salon every 6 weeks or so. I learned how to Deva cut my DD's curls on youtube, and I'm the only one who has cut her hair so far.

We cut DD1's hair (she is really due for another one!) My mom learned how to before, so I use her tools and I think having the right tools is half the battle! We don't do anything fancy and it doesn't look AMAZING but for a 2-3 year old, it's more than fine

@MrsBucky: this is exactly what I did and everything is fine except the top. I should have wet it first and that might help

I cut my son's hair. He had his first real haircut at a stylist when he was about 15 months. I watched what she did carefully and then just tried maintaining/repeating that. I mostly get it right - every now and then I feel like I really messed it up, but it grows back fast enough it doesn't bug me for long.

I cut my sons hair for the first time a few weeks ago. I used clippers with guards like the lady that used to cut his hair (switched careers), but used clippers on the top too; should have used scissors. It turned out terrible, but it didn't take long for it to start growing out and it doesn't look bad now.

My recommendation is to use longer guards than you think you will need, because you can always make it shorter. Either have dad help hold him still or put him in front of a show or movie. It's only hair and it will grow back, and it's not like a 2 year old (in my case) knows or cares that his hair looks kind of crappy for a week or so.

I cut my daughter’s hair for the first time last month and was shaking the entire time because I was so nervous I would mess up! I watched lots of YouTube videos and actually had one running as I cut her hair so I could copy what they were doing as I went along. I think a straight across girls cut would be easier than a boy’s, but I did an angled bob with layers in the front and I’m not one to brag but am so proud of how well it came out. I actually started trimming my bangs because it went so well! So I’d say watch lots of videos, have one going in case you forget what you’re doing, and also plop him in front of a show (it took me 45 minutes because I was so nervous but next time I’ll know what to do so it will be less).

I’m about to attempt cutting my 3 year old’s hair soon. My plan after watching the “pros” do it a bunch of times is to fade the buzzer towards the top and then do the top with scissors by combing the top vertically up, holding it between my fingers pointing from the back of his head to his front and cutting it that way. I think if you comb/ hold/ snip vertically in a few different ways, it will work out. But I get it, I’m nervous too. But hair grows, and honestly the pros only do a so so job anyway, so I might as well not pay a bunch of money for it to end up roughly the same anyway? I’m giving myself a pep talk here too, hah!

I cut my 28 months old son's very fine. VERY straight hair. It's.... ok. Turns our decent but I can't do the front well! :-)

I just watched youtube and practiced a ton. Do you have a stylist friend who could show you instead of going to an official class?

Not sure about the stylist lesson, but so far we cut the kids' hair at home and it doesn't seem that hard. We use a straight-edge comb and big scissors. I guess you just need to snip off a little at a time so you don't take off too much, and it works out fine.

If only adult haircuts were so easy... I have weird hair and probably need to cut it like yesterday, but I've been to five different hairdressers in the last few years, and I don't trust a single one of them to do anything radical with my hair.

I cut my daughter's hair instead of going to a stylist. I'm not confident that she will sit still and I won't pay for a professional haircut until I am confident in that fact. Her hair is curly and she likes it to be longer, so I can get away with it.

I cut all my guy's hair. It just takes practice. You can watch videos of people cutting boys hair to get the idea. It is easier if you can get a basic cut from a stylist and then maintain it. That's what I've done with DH.

I use clippers (#10) for all of the back and sides and then I use thinning shears on the top. I use fine pointed shears in the front and I cut vertically into the hair as opposed to across the forehead.
