I didn't. Many people say they don't want buy another crib but cribs aren't expensive so it didn't matter to us.

My kids will end up being just under 3 years apart and we are not buying a second crib. My first LO is not climbing out and mostly still naps, so we don't want to mess with that. Baby will be fine in a bassinet and then pack n play for at least 5-6 months and hopefully by that time LO1 decides he's ready for a twin bed. We've taken him to a furniture store and really talk up the idea of a big boy bed, but also let him know that he can tell us when he's ready. I bought him some sheets for a twin bed that he loves and remind him that he can't use them until he's ready for the big bed.

Same exact timing, effortless transition for us! 26 months apart, we switched #1 to toddler bed and kicked #2 out of the p&p in our room at 2 months. Absolutely no issues, wouldn't have been worth buying a second crib for us.

@mrs.shinerbock: we tried to transition at about 27m in June in anticipation of number 2 coming in Sept. It started out great but quickly turned into 20 escapes at bedtime & midnight & 4am & 545am. We were all so tired including him so we put the bars back on and tada he's back to happily sleeping 12 hours straight. He was never climbing out and I just don't think he was ready. He usually sleeps cuddled against the front rail. :) we will try again when he can handle the responsibility better, ha, and I'm now in the "crib as long as possible" club.

@mrs.shinerbock: Our LOs are 26 months apart and my DD was very happy sleeping in the crib. We kept her there and put DS in the rock and play or the swing for the first few months. By the time DS had grown out of the RNP I still wasn't ready to rock the boat and move DD out of the crib so we bought a cheap Ikea crib for DS and kept them both in cribs for a few months.

We recently moved DD to a twin bed so in hindsight we probably could have gotten by without buying a second crib. I'm still glad I didn't risk it though. Sleep is precious!

B was 18 months when G was born and I felt like that was too young to transition B to a big bed so we bought a second crib. Now that G is 6 months old, I know that was the right decision for us. B went through a really bad phase of being very difficult to put to bed after G was born, and had she been in a regular bed, it would have been even more of a disaster. It's worked out well for us.

We bought a second crib. It was $100, so no biggie. Ironically, T has only used his crib to play in, and when he was 9 weeks old, E decided she was ready for the toddler bed. In hindsight, I couldn't transitioned her out of it before he needs it, but how could I have ever known?! She totally forced our hand, quite unexpectedly. Anyways, we had some awesome guaranteed good sleep from her while we had a newborn. I would not have wanted to do the toddler bed or floor bed transition when he was younger; oh all did work out for the best. Good sleep is some invaluable shit right there, lol.

We're planning on a second kid for LO#2 (they'll be 24 months apart). However, we have the 4-in-1 style, and plan on turning DD's bed into a daybed toddler bed.

She'll get a big bed closer to 5 or so.

Ours are 20 months apart and we transitioned to a bed after LO2 arrived. He stayed in our room for several months so the crib got moved to the nursery a month or two before we really needed it and there were no bad feelings about it. It was really not a big deal!

We didn't. Ours are 24 months apart. We bought a second (used) crib because DS loves his crib and sleeps well in it and I am not changing a damn thing until he either climbs out or needs potty access. I think it was a good call as the new baby transition had zero impact on his sleep. In retrospect I might have held off on buying a second crib because DD is in a RNP and we could always do a PNP for a while too. But for all I know DS will love his crib for another year, and if that is true then the second crib will be worth it.

@Mrs. Confetti: I ised to think it was silly to buy a second crib for such a short time. Now I am a parent and I realize I would pay almost any amount of money for good sleep. If I could drop $200 right now and ensure my kid would go to sleep easily and sleep through until a reasonable time in the morning, I'd be running to the atm. Sadly, my kid hates her crib at night anyway.

We also waited - DD was 28 months when DS was born and hadn't tried escaping her crib so we just bought a second crib. We just transitioned her to a big bed last week, she'll be 3 next month and DS is 7 months. She actually kept talking about how DS should have her crib since he's a baby and she is not.

One thing I'd recommend - if you do buy a second crib, just get the cheapest one possible. Now that DD is in a big bed we are just putting her nicer crib in DS's room and getting rid of the cheap one we had for him.

We kept C in the crib. Plan was to switch him no earlier than age three or if he jumped sooner (whomp whomp, he did but that's another story). We borrowed a friend's mini crib, but nowadays you can get a crib at IKEA and other places very affordably so I don't understand the huge rush of hustling kids into beds just for this reason unless it is truly a hardship and you can't afford any alternative for baby (who doesn't need a crib right away). We felt that we should let C be young while he is young and let him use the crib while he needed it.

dD1 was 22 months when DD2 arrived, so we bought a second crib. I now have a 15 month old and a newly 3 year old both sleeping in cribs....I'm subscribing to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality on this one. If DD1 is still happy in her crib, I see no reason to rush the transition!

We didnt! They're 19 months apart and we also intend on keeping DD2 in our room until about 6 months. She's currently 3 months and it's fine. But we have a mini crib and DD1 is basically exactly as big as the crib so we may need to transition her earlier than I wanted anyway :/. I think it's fine not to move them prior, especially if you're wanting to wait 5 to 6 months.

So sounds like it could work, but we should be open to buying another crib if it doesn't. She does sleep pretty well now (knock on wood) and it took so long to get her there that I really don't want to mess with it.

Our first was 30 months when the baby was born. He still slept well in the crib and napped and didn't climb out so we didn't change him. We moved him at 34 months when he started climbing out. No issues. The baby was 3 months and sleeping in his own room by then. We kissed that nap goodbye, though! We didn't mind having 2 cribs because they were gifts and convert to full sized beds.

We didn't. I'm trying to remember when we put DS in the twin bed...I think it was March so he was about 32 months old and she was 13 months old. She has coslept with us since day 1! I planned on putting her in the crib, but honestly, she cried when I tried so I said screw it. I solo parent a lot and didn't need two kids with sleep issues and her sleep overall has been really great cosleeping. Probably in December we will put her in a crib full time. Lately she has done naps in the crib and sometimes I'll put her in it at night and she cries around 2 and I bring her to bed. Most times we just have an mpty crib!

I tried to transition LO#1 before LO#2 was born, but it was an epic failure. I then rationalized that we would co-sleep with LO#2 for awhile and then room in at the very least for about a year, so I had plenty of time. Then LO#2 was born, and didn't love co-sleeping. I wasn't about to boot LO#1 out of the crib at that point because she is happy in the crib and unhappy in the toddler bed and I was unwilling to lose any sleep. So I went to Ikea and bought another crib and I don't regret it at all. I am now a proponent of - if it works, don't mess with it! A hundred bucks for an Ikea crib so that everyone can sleep well is a very small price to pay!

Another January mom who will be in the same boat. LO will be 24 months at that time. I think we may wait and keep the baby in a bassinet or travel crib for awhile. I don't want to deal with that transition until we have to. Right now he sleeps like a dream. We are moving in March and currently don't have room for a second crib (or a toddler bed) so that further complicates things.

BUT- I am team keep the kid sleeping however they are sleeping. If my toddler was sleeping well in the crib and not climbing out, I may have borrowed or bought a new crib just to save her sleep. The big bed transition isn't going well.
