I haven't done it but I know people who have. The only thing I would add is that if you ship cargo there can be temperature restrictions, and you can't ship them when it's too hot or too cold!

@jaclyn: The problem being that my LO and I are going to try to take a military flight back to the states, so we have to send the cats cargo. :/ We looked into excess baggage. Delta, American and United will all allow pets as excess baggage. I think the fee is around $200 per animal, but Delta and American will let you fly 2 animals of the same species in 1 crate.

@zippylef - if your cats are small enough, they can fly in the cabin with you, which is a lot cheaper than cargo. our 8kg dachshund flew in the cabin with us on air canada and it was maybe $100 or $200? when we flew him into the UK in cargo a few years ago, it ended up being about $1200.

off the top of my head, air canada has a 10 kg limit, lufthansa has a 8kg limit and air france has a 6kg limit, all including the weight of the bag.

in terms of documentation, the only thing needed to come into the US was proof of rabies vaccination. immigration took a quick (5 second?) look at our paperwork and cleared us for coming in. i had a fit to fly letter and tons of vaccination paperwork, but no one ever bothered to look at it.

@jaclyn: Right now, we're trying to shop around quotes and such. Just trying to find a place that wont cost us an arm and a leg. Seems $1500 is about the going rate for 2 cats.

@lemondrop: Thankfully, the military has eased that process a bit. They are both turning 1 this summer, so they will already be up to date on shots. I know we have to have our vet fill out a health form for them.

Lots of paperwork, it would be good to contract your vet asap, to see what needs to be done and when, and to make sure vaccines are up to date. Luckily shipping back to the states is easier than to other places!

we flew with our dog from nyc to london with virgin atlantic in the cargo (a requirement for all pets flying into the UK) and we just flew back to nyc from london via toronto on air canada with him in the cabin with us. flying into the US was a million times easier than flying into the UK.

i did a TON of research, so happy to answer any questions you may have!

My BIL shipped their dog from Turkey to stateside when he was stationed there. I don't remember the particulars but he was in the cargo of the plane. Lots of red tape as well to go through. But not sure if that was bc the dog was from Turkey?

He got help from the head of a local SPCA chapter. I think he gave the dog a pill to help deal with the anxiety of being in a plane cargo and crated?
