@winniebee: No, that was just how far along I was when we found out we needed testing. After our BFP we raced to get DH's bloodwork done to see if he is a carrier for MIL's balanced translocation. He is, and by the time we got the results back I was already 13 weeks.

@winniebee: A friend has gone straight to CVS with each of her three kids after several losses and the discovery of some hereditary chromosomal issues. From what she told me, no one hassled her about why she was doing it. Also, when I had my amnio, my genetic counselor and MFM Doctor agreed - CVS and amnio are now so much less risky than they used to be since they are guided by ultrasound, and the specialists doing them do them alllll the time. As much as it doesn't feel routine to us as the patients, it's actually considered a routine, relatively non-invasive procedure.

@MrsSCB: that's good information! My MFM doctor was also saying previously it was difficult to distinguish between a miscarriage which would have occurred naturally anyways and what that perhaps was induced by CVS. Now, there's better information on the differences.

@winniebee: You're welcome! One more thing to add -- I believe the risk used to be higher because doctors would do an ultrasound to get a good idea of where the fetus/placenta were and would then do the procedure after the US. Now they typically do the procedure while watching on US, so they can see more accurately. Also, US machines are more advanced so that also helps them see more clearly.

This was obviously a long time ago, but my mom had CVS testing done due only to AMA. It turned out fine (for me and my sister). FWIW, my OB said amnio and CVS are both much safer than people tend to believe, and that she'd never encountered a problem in her career.

@KayKay: I haven't read that book before. I'll have to check it out. Though I think most of the people commenting here have had bad things happen (maybe unlike the author of the book?)

@Raspberry: was there a reason why you did it at 13 weeks? I am trying to remember, I thought my MFM doctor said it could be done as early as 10 weeks.

@Trailmix: Thanks! I've had so many medical procedures at this point, I'm not too concerned about the pain. Miscarriage, yes. But MFM seems to think risk is like 1/500 (which is less of a risk than me having a baby with a chromosomal issue, given my age).

@winniebee: have you read "Expecting Better"? I think the author decided to do it (with no previous bad outcomes driving her decisions, like you & others here...), mostly because the other tests are still just screenings and she wanted definite info!

I had CVS a bit later (at 13 weeks). I had read the rate of miscarriage is slightly increased, but less so at 13 weeks vs. at 11 weeks. I didn't have a choice in the timing, though.

For me it did not hurt, it was just uncomfortable. I spent the rest of the day and the next taking it really easy in bed, as instructed by the medical staff.

It's a long story but I needed to do CVS testing in the first trimester. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend it unless you felt it was absolutely necessary. It is super-painful and does increase your chance of miscarriage, slightly.

We went straight to CVS at 12 weeks. The reasoning was basically that we like more information rather than less.

We ended up getting back an abnormal result from the CVS (trisomy 7 in the placenta) that resulted in elevated care throughout my pregnancy and a more in-depth 20 week ultrasound. We have absolutely no regrets getting the CVS since it uncovered a problem in the pregnancy.

Has anyone skipped straight to a CVS (by-passing NIPT type testing) in pregnancy for definitive answers early on? I had a follow up appointment with MFM doctor last week and one of the things he mentioned for a possible future pregnancy is skipping straight to a CVS as 10 weeks to get definitive answers on chromosomal issues early on. Basically, he suggested this because we found out about our poor fetal diagnosis so late in pregnancy last time.

If you did the CVS early, how did it go? What were your reasons for pursuing it rather than the NIPT screening test first?
