@MrsSCB: I kind of switched careers to a different path in the same-ish field. I had to apply to A LOT of jobs and a lot of different areas. Even then, I only got a few interviews. Have you tried the hospitals, colleges, and maybe even school districts in the area? I found they usually had a wide array of opportunities. Please don't get too discouraged. I know it's easy in this situation to feel that way. It took me about 6 months to find something, but it seemed like once the first job offer came in another one came in right behind it.

I moved from the UK to the Middle East last year for my husband’s job a year ago and I struggled with this exact issue. I am a Criminal Justice Social Worker, I have also worked in other areas of Social Work too, and there is no such thing as Social Work here in Qatar so I had to find a new career. I have a really great job in PR for a construction company that I got because of my writing skills, learned from years of report work in Social Work. I was not expecting to enjoy a career in PR as it was not my choice and seemed hugely out with my comfort zone. I think being open minded and using it as an opportunity to learn new skills has really helped. I say go for it, you have nothing to lose and can always return to your area of expertise at a later date if it doesn’t work out.

@MrsSCB: I haven't switched careers, but work in government, and have noticed that a lot of the public affairs/spokesperson type jobs are often filled by people transitioning from news careers . . . it's a fast paced, busy environment but there are all sorts of spokespeople for every politician, city/state agency, even advocacy organizations that interface w/ government. I think of it as a field with lots of opportunities and it will never be the same day twice!

Good luck with whatever you do.

@MrsSCB: I moved from being on the production side of news (director/TD) to training people on how to use ENPS. I was able to take my TV knowledge and use it in this new field where my hours were 8:30 - 5 M-F. It made life so much better knowing I would never again gave to work the morning news or evening news shifts. I was then able to take that knowledge and used it to get my current job. News is a hard business to be in. If you want to leave and get the opportunity to do so, I say go for it.

@MrsSCB: you might be interested in an agency position then. You wouldn't necessarily need to start at the bottom and your media background would help you in media relations. Plus, them with an agency you could branch into other areas of PR and get more experience. Another alternative is to look for an in-house media relations position. Larger institutions/organizations have sizeable in-house communications staff and sometimes a specific person dedicated to media relations. I would search if your town has a local chapter of PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and check out their job board for starters. You may also want to attend some of their programs/events to network with PR professionals. You could get some contacts that way. I think big name show experience could really help you in getting resume attention, etc. Let me know if you have any other q's!

@MrsSCB: I worked in PR a while ago, and found that people with a specialty were the most sought over. Crisis PR, non-profit PR, tech PR... these all made people a lot more attractive to employers/recruiters! Well the non-profit PR work wasn't very lucrative so there's that, but crisis and tech PR pays well and is pretty intellectually challenging.

There are a lot of online resources on the transition from journalism to pr (or from hack to flack, as people say)... let me know if I can be of any help!

@swedishfish: I'm sorry, it really does suck :-( I'm a little frustrated I didn't have more foresight, too. Just out of college, I was fine working whenever, whatever hours just to get into the industry. I felt like it didn't matter the hours or that it didn't pay much, as long as I was enjoying the work. But now that I'm married and thinking about TTC soon, looking at a future of working off hours just makes me sad.

@sunshineandsushi: PR is definitely something I'm looking into! I think you're right, that the skills would translate well. I have five years of news experience so not decades or anything, but I did work for some big-name shows when I lived in NYC. Hopefully that will help at least catch people's attention. I don't mind starting at the bottom of the ladder. News doesn't pay much anyway, so I'd probably be at about the same place haha. Do you have any ideas about websites or places to look for openings?

@imbali: @.twist.: Sorry you guys are going through the same thing -- it's so disconcerting to feel like you don't know what to do! I hope you find a good direction or new job soon :-)

@BeachMama: Thank you for sharing your story, it's encouraging! That's pretty much a big thing I'm hoping for -- stability and better hours. When we have kids I don't want to be working 3pm to midnight and on weekends. Thanks for that link, I'll definitely be perusing it!

My B.S. is in marketing and I worked in marketing for about 4 years. I was unhappy, not feeling like it was the area for me. I'm not a shmoozer, didn't want to play the game, was stuck in a good ole boys club where I worked.

I started researching different careers, with encouragement from my parents. I eventually decided to go into physical therapy for a few reasons - I liked that it's healthcare without relying on drugs, I like that I could work my job and be done with it at the end of the day, it can offer flexible schedules, a variety of settings, etc. So I ended up going back to school - 1 year to take the science pre-reqs, then 3 years of grad school. I've been practicing for 6 years and am pretty happy with it. While it's not my "calling" in life and I'm not sure I'll be doing it for the next 30 years, I do enjoy a flexible schedule (gives me time for DD and family), I hardly ever take work home with me, and it's a fairly stable career.

It was really hard making the decision to go back to school. Sometimes I felt awkward being 30 and starting over, but in the long run it was the best decision for me. I did a lot of research on a website like this http://www.bls.gov/ooh/ looking at all different kinds of occupations.

I don't have a success story to share, but I am in the PR industry and know quite a few people who moved into PR from news. You have an inside edge coming from that industry, so I would try something like that! How many years of experience do you have in news?

Have you completely changed careers? I'm feeling really lost these days. I made a big cross-country move for my H's job last year. He loves his new job, but I'm really not happy. I'm starting to think I won't find what I'm looking for in my current industry (news). I'm tired of working late nights, weekends, super early mornings and everything in between. I just want to be a normal, weekday, 8 to 5 person but that's not likely in my current industry. I can write, so I'm hoping that will translate well into other industries (mainly PR, communications, media relations, etc.) But I just don't even know where to start.

TLDR: Have you changed careers? How did you do it? How did you decide what to do? I'm starting to feel trapped in my current job, and it's honestly really making me extremely depressed and anxious. If you have a success story or advice, please share!
