@MrsLilybugg: This happened to me. I took a lower division class at a community college and was assured by a university counselor that it would transfer over. So when I transferred they didn't want to give me credit for it. So I took it to the dean I explained my situation and showed him the course description in the community college's catalog and told him that it meets the same criteria as the course they wanted me to take in the University. I got my credit for my course. So I would definitely appeal.

UPDATE:
They accepted three of the four classes for a total of 12 credits! At my current rate (scholarship covers two courses per semester, Fall and Spring), that saves me an entire year!

I'm appealing the fourth and submitted the petition. They considered it a double:
I took Child and ADOLESCENT Psych at my first school. And then at my current school, I took INFANT and Child Pscyh. So they are counting it as the same. However, my current school has an "Adolescent" Psych course. It's not my major so I'm hoping they re-evaluate and transfer it as "Adolescent". Eek. Maybe? Gah.

@marionberry: do you mind if I wall you the course descriptions so you can tell me what you think my chances are?? I hate this waiting game ha ha!

@marionberry: this was super helpful! Thank you! I'm going to find course descriptions from my former university and start from there. That's a good point- maybe that can even add it to "general requirements"! Crossing fingers
@sarac: thanks!

I used to work in admissions doing just this. What we typically did is look at your previous syllabus and then try to find any class we offered that was comparable so that we could transfer the credits at the time you applied. Often times I had to do research on the class at the previous institution to know how to place it. I'd recommend contacting your admissions department and bringing along a course description from your previous classes that haven't been counted and point out any classes at your current institution that you think are comparable. If they don't have something comparable, ask if you can be given generic credits for those classes they can't match up. We had a code that was basically a 100 level art class (for example) that didn't truly specify a class but would give you credit for that level of course anyway. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone! I probably waited too long - these are courses that didn't transfer when I first started school right outta high school. There's a long gap between Undergrad Part One and years later, Undergrad Part Two. But it's true - I won't know unless I at least try!

I would submit the course syllabus and course description from the classes you want to transfer, and if possible, get the syllabus and course description for the class at the new school that you are trying to get credit for so that its easy to compare.

I've never had to, but I would appeal them anyway. They cannot do anything for you if they don't know. I would probably have a written description of each class plus your transcript and go talk to them in person. They might be able to find something similar that would make sense to apply a similar credit to. I would assume the admissions department would be able to tell you with whom to talk.

Just what the title says. If you have succeeded in appealing (with the dean??) a decision not to transfer undergrad course credits from a different university, how did you do it? Did you appeal right away?

If you are in undergrad university admissions (or whatever the appropriate department is!): any advice on how to appeal?
