We ended up finding a free solution today.

The facilities people came by to see what I was needing, and I showed them one door on my floor that isn't see through. The coworker with that office has offered to just trade their glass with mine.

We have magnetic blinds on our back door at home. It's a metal exterior door with a half window. Since it's metal, we didn't want to try to install screws, so we went with a cheap magnetic set I found. We've had the blinds 5 years with no issues. They're not as pretty as the blinds on our windows, but they've worked well.

We use magnetic blinds on a door at home and never have issue with them. Just get the plastic blinds, they are less noisy and hold up well. I used a roll of wrapping paper on my door for pumping purposes, white side out to the other office space. It was a violation of security code but oh well, my door was wood though so the magnetic blinds were not an option.

@MaryM: I didn’t read the other responses but maybe two or three of those hooks you can just stick to the wall. Put them at the top of the door and hang a curtain or some fabric with rings or holes. Kinda like a shower curtain? I know you can find pretty heavy duty hooks. We have one on the bathroom door that holds at least a few towels.

Another thumbs up for the paper redi blinds. They have non blackout ones too, more light filtering for privacy than black out. We used the same pair in my daughters room for two years plus, but we pretty much left them down almost all the time. I have them in our guest room now and they have gone up and down a bunch and are still great. But like someone else said they are a little annoying to open and close and wouldn’t be something i would want to do like three times a day five days a week.

@MaryM: Well, my son was 8 months - 20 months at the time we used them in his room. On his window we used the blackout ones and on a door connecting his room to our room we used one (it had a glass panel and we didn’t want him seeing into our room). He definitely pulled and played with them a lot and they stayed put.
That said, they MIGHT be annoying If you are putting them up and down multiple times a day. Since they are paper and you just sort of accordion fold them up and clamp. But they are so cheap that I would still start with them and change it later if you had to.
Also, could you just leave them down and when you’re not pumping leave your door open?

@marym we used those blackout paper blinds in my son's room as blackouts for like 6 months. They come with plastic clips to hold them in place for when you fold up the blinds, and we clipped them up during the day, unclipped them at night, and they were still going strong when we finally replaced them with something permanent.

@raspberries: @SweetiePie: We're generally an open-door kind of culture in our office. Do you have experience with these staying put even if they're raised and lowered a lot?

@raspberries: was going to suggest these too. We’ve used these multiple times and they are great. Come down very easily when ready but stay up as long as you need them (in one instance we used them for a whole year, on a door like the one you described @MaryM:)

@mdf106: I'd do something like cardboard if the window wasn't so long. It's an old building with high ceilings, so the door is probably 8 ft high, with the window being close to 6

@raspberries: I'll check that out!

@bees_knees: The window casing is beveled, so nothing can really be inserted. When I put in the request, I figured they'd mount blinds on the inside (so they wouldn't be visible when the door is open and the blinds are up).

I didn’t even know they existed! They sound intriguing though.

Is there any way to put a tension rod and drapes up? That could be another temporary option?

I haven't used magnetic blinds, but our pumping room at work is a converted office that sounds similar (it has a door with a door-length window right beside it.) Our facilities guys just used a black-out paper blind cut to size - something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Redi-Shade-Black-Out-Paper-Window-Shade-36-in-W-x-72-in-L-3203094/202674913.

I used cardboard over the window for a similar purpose, and it worked fine (and was obviously temporary).

Any idea how strong they are?

At work, we have semi-opaque glass in our doors. It's not clear, but people can see if you're if you're in your office and it's clear enough that I've asked for some sort of blinds when I come back from maternity leave for pumping privacy.

But our building was recently renovated, so they're very hesitant to do anything permanent (and they want all offices in the building to match). So my bosses have suggested magnetic blinds.

The window is the full length of the door, so I don't imagine the blinds are very light. Has anyone used magnetic blinds? Have they stayed put well?
