Not my DH, but my dad used to snore so loudly I could hear it in my room across the house on a different floor. He got a CPAP and swears by it. my mom said the machine sound is easier to sleep to and my dad said that adjusting to the mask was worth it to finally get some solid sleep

DH saw a sleep spedialist after seeing his regular doc and an ENT...he has middle brain apnea. Normal weight and everything. He wears a CPAP and it helps a lot but he's part of the 5% that gets weird pain from his if he sleeps on his side. He used to sound like a train and I finally snapped over it, which is when he realized how important it was he get help

Apnea can deprive your body of oxygen and basically cells can die, not to mention the long term effects of exhaustion.

@twoofeverything: I've shared a room with my mom on trips and she has a cpap. I used to sleep with an air filter that was like a white noise machine, so I actually don't mind the noise of the machines.

But we nearly wet the bed once when she tried to talk to me after the machine was already on!

UGH! I am so sorry!
So, kind of a long journey for us. DH had MAJOR sleep issues -- like talking, thrashing, "chomping his teeth" in his sleep, etc. . He finally agreed to get a sleep test done right after we got married, and he was diagnosed with severe apnea. They recommended a CPAP and a mouth guard.
The CPAP made a huge difference, but at first, I was the only one who really benefitted. His sleep and snoring issues were immediately cured! That said, it took him about 8 months to truly get used to wearing the machine.
The tubing was hard for him to get used to, and that made it tough for him to roll over. He also had a (somewhat common) reaction that gave him insane, vivid, and epic dreams that felt like they lasted the whole night. It had something to do with adjusting to deep sleep, which he obviously wasn't getting much of before the CPAP. His energy levels definitely got much better after a month or two on the machine, which made a HUGE difference in our lives.
For me, the only downside of the CPAP is the "wind tunnel" noise that DH makes when he opens his mouth while sleeping. The machine, itself, is quiet! MUCH better than the snoring :-)
Good luck with figuring everything out!

@MaryM: i've had a sleep test done in the lab & mr. bird had one more recently at home. i think more and more people are having them done at home because it is more cost efficient and they get a better picture of how the person sleeps in their home environment rather than the lab. i think mine was at the lab because i was having an eeg (i was being worked up for neuro issues, not snoring) and mr. bird's was at home because he didn't need the eeg wires all over his head. he was told he had mild sleep apnea that didn't require a machine, but that sleeping on his side and losing weight could help improve his sleep.

My husband has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP machine. He feels better with it but it wasn't the energizing life changing fix he was hoping for. He finds it uncomfortable so it interferes with his sleep in that way. He lost about 20 pounds a couple years ago and it didn't make a difference for him.

I completely understand how you feel! My husband has sever apnea and I sleep w/ earplugs. I try to make him wear his cpap, but he hardly does. But, when he actually does wear it, it's SO much better!

I've had issues with snoring and have looked into remedies. There are places where you can rent a CPAP machine, if he's nervous about the outlay - might be a good way to cost effectively trial a machine.

@yoursilverlining: I think it's somewhat more complicated because he is part of an HMO through Kaiser. I think they'd pay for part of the machine, but there was a significant out of pocket cost.

His regular doctor (an internist) has seen him, and as far as I know, only ordered the sleep test. Maybe I'll see if she can refer him to an ENT. That's a good idea.

I used to LOVE his coverage (it was really easy when he had health problems a few years ago that all his doctors/records/etc were in one place)

But I've been unimpressed with this. Maybe because it's not immediately life threatening? He took an at home sleep test, so there wasn't really anyone "administering" it.

@MaryM: His insurance won't cover the machine? I don't know exactly how much my husband pays for his and all the masks and stuff, but definitely not that much! It goes through his insurance.

We also tried to breathing strips and OTC remedies and nothing worked. :bummed:

What about seeing an ENT specialist? (unless the sleep study people were ENT people).

@mrbee: Well, the machines also aren't cheap. He's not really inclined to spend $3-500 for a "let's see if this will work" kind of thing.

I'm asking moreso to find out what other people in this situation have done. like if there are interventions other than the machine that have been suggested, or if doctors have done other tests to figure out the cause for the snoring instead of blindly trying treatments until something works.

@MaryM: If he's feeling really exhausted for no reason, maybe it's worth getting a machine just to see if that helps him have more energy!

@yoursilverlining: Thanks for the input. I'm pushing him to follow up even if the results say "optional"

Even when he was at his ideal weight (which his doctor agreed was not sustainable) it was pretty bad. It does get worse when he gains more, but it doesn't seem to get "better" (all the way) when he loses.

My husband’s snoring was so bad that I made him go get a sleep test and he has “mild apnea” too. He does have a CPAP machine, which he wears most of the time. There are actually a couple of different types of machines they can use - so one might work better for your husband than another (rather than it being just a "use it or don't" situation).

My husband’s doctor said that losing weight can help alleviate snoring, so that’s a possible option if your husband is overweight at all.

He does believe me. And he's had enough roommates over time to confirm that it's really bad. He's also tried nose strips and throat spray to make it better.

But he's stubborn when it comes to health and going to the doctor.

So, after two years of marriage (and horrible sleep for me), I finally convinced DH to talk to his doctor about his snoring. It was only after he started having issues (he was super exhausted for no reason) that he took that step.

They set him up with a sleep text last month, and he got the results. He's only mildly apneic. So they leave it up to him to decide if he should get a machine or not, they don't have a strong recommendation.

But the apnea isn't the main problem. It may be mild, but his snoring is SO NOT.

We got a foam mattress topper so that I couldn't feel him shaking the bed as much. I sleep with foam earplugs and still sometimes hear him. If for any reason I wake him up, he's incredibly startled, so I know he's not sleeping well.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? As hard as it was to get him to go in the first place, I feel like he's going to take this and run with it and say he doesn't need a machine, end of story. But I still need sleep!!

Has anyone had further talks with a doctor snoring that isn't necessarily apnea related? What did they do/say/suggest?
